It was the first Pri March on the Ain ntent and acted as both a gay pri event and an anti-Apartheid march. The march was anised by the Gay and Lbian Organisatn of the Wwatersrand (GLOW) and attracted a crowd of about 800 people. The purpose of the event was not only to monstrate pri gay or lbian inty but also to provi a wir platform for voicg polil ncerns.
The march was part of a broar stggle to crimalise homosexualy South Ain law and to end Apartheid.
Addrsg the crowd, Simon Nkoli said; “I am black and I am gay. LGBTIQ+ Pri n be a ncept, a feelg, or a time (a day or a month) through which members of the LGBTIQ+ (Lbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgenr, Intersex and Queer, pl) muny celebrate their inty and muny wh ‘pri’. After years of experiencg the homophobic raids and harassment by the thori, this time the fur bar patrons fought back.
SOUTH AI’S FIRST OPENLY GAY MAYOR CELEBRAT PRI MONTH
The event was anised by GLOW (Gay and Lbian Organisatn of the Wwatersrand).
At that time, was illegal to be lbian or gay South Ai. Among the speakers were late gay anti-apartheid activist Simon Nkoli, queer filmmaker Beverley Dsie, gay Dutch Reformed Church mister Hendrik Pretori, and Edw Cameron, who went on to bee the first gay and HIV-posive Constutnal Court judge. Nkoli famoly said at the march: “I am black and I am gay.
