Col thks he’s one of the good guys. “I’m so lucky to get to play such a son of a bch,” Hickey says. “A straight, whe, cis male who, bee he was born and raised on a untercultural hippie mune, nsirs himself very woke.” Instead, havg to bare his soul to a Black female therapist brgs up some issu. “It touch all of this unspoken, valier misogyny, homophobia, racism, all the stuff that’s jt unr the surface that’s so sry and toxic.” Hickey risted playg him as a villa: “Part of the problem is that we all objectify each other by lor, by genr, by sexual inty. Some of work our ass off to be better, but this is a guy who thks he walks the walk, and he don’t, and ’s revealed to him over the six episos a way that’s really shockg and fun.” </p><p data-no-id="5" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0">A show like this, wh s long two-person scen that he scrib as “bullfights,” was as close to theater as he’s been on a set: 28 pag of dialogue to memorize and get through each day. A challenge, even if he hadn’t still been alg wh ridual bra fog om a mid-2020 se of Covid. But he relaxed and remd himself that he was prepared. “It was the first time I realized that my experience was my iend. Bee of my experience theater, I knew what to do to get ready to play the part. Hickey plays Michael, a melancholy travel wrer on assignment Tel Aviv, who rents the apartment of Tomer, a film stunt played by Niv Nissim, who shows him the cy. It’s a very clever queerg of the <em>Unr The Tn Sun</em> space—an exploratn of what Hickey lls “a generatnal divi that two broken-hearted people exist on oppose sis of.” Michael is “ a middle-aged malaise, havg had tragedy his life,” Hickey says, “and then also havg lived through what my character’s generatn–and me, and you–have lived through.” </p><p data-no-id="8" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0">One of the film’s many surpris is that tak that malaise straight on. Michael is not fightg for his survival the way he would have been not long ago; the pills we see him take, which would almost certaly have been HIV meditn for any middle-aged gay character up to this pot, might jt be stats. The qutn for this fifty-somethg character, for what feels like the first time on screen, is not “will he live,” but “<em>how</em> will he live?”</p><p data-no-id="9" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0">It’s a qutn Hickey’s thought a lot about. For the gay men of Generatn X, “’s like we’re no longer livg a war zone. That’s not to say that the lamy of AIDS is over, we still have to live wh utn and pnce. It’s jt manageable now. But g out of the nuclear crisis of that time, not livg a time when we’re fightg for our liv and our right to s at the table, you get to our ag, and you’re faced wh an existential crisis. Like, <em>what now?”</em></p><p data-no-id="10" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0">In the theater, Hickey’s had a chance to explore the qutns at length. “I’m a beneficiary of a good number of wrers who are medatg on that,” he says. He starred “The Inherance” on Broadway, a vast, two-part play that addrsed the post-AIDS crisis generatn gap, and 2015’s off- Broadway “Dada Woof Papa Hot,” he played a gay father wh a se of survivor’s guilt. “My character had a monologue where he said: this is gog to sound horrible, but I miss that time. We were more alive on the pla, we were so different om other people, and we had a sgle, laser foc, which was to stay alive and to save our brothers and sisters.” </p><p data-no-id="11" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0">Hickey don’t miss that time. But the qutn still troubl him: “If I have all the same thgs as a straight person, if my problems are the same as theirs, then what mak me gay? Michael <em>Sublet</em> is sufferg through that. I’m not sure he knows what he’s supposed to be livg for. It’s 30-somethg years after the worst part of the lamy, and here he is, and he’s thkg about havg children. He’s dog the unthkable.”</p><p data-no-id="12" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0">It's uncharted terrory, on screen and off. The first generatn of gay men to live their liv openly lost those liv to AIDS, whether they actually died or were jt left to tend to those who did. And we, the generatn right behd, lost our elrs. If we’re mired this existential malaise, ’s bee we haven’t had anyone to show the way out. </p><p data-no-id="13" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0">“I don’t want to rce to this, but this whole <em>daddy</em> thg. Or is <em>zaddy?” </em>he asks, and beats the hell out of me. “We didn’t have that vernacular, that subset of attractn, bee for that olr generatn, there was such a stggle gog on for them to survive. He’s not sure whether was Tony Khner, but feels safe to attribute somethg brilliant to Tony Khner. “Somebody was talkg to him. Someone who had chosen not to e out, and this person said ‘I choose not to talk about my personal life.’ And Tony said ‘Beg gay is not your personal life. Beg gay is who you are.’” </p><p data-no-id="17" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0">I have to ask: if he’s thought about what mak him gay, what has he e up wh? He thks on for a long send, and then spills , “My dogs. I’m a kid om a small town Texas, so I thought ‘I have to get a big dog, I need a <em>guy dog</em>.’ I n’t believe I’m admtg this. And of urse I end up wh two ltle terrier mutts, 10 and 13 pounds.” He shak his head. “I don’t know what a gay dog is, but the are not the giant mangy straight-guy dogs I thought I was supposed to get.”</p><p data-no-id="18" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0">It’s funny, and he knows is, but that don’t mean he’s kiddg. “I rry that. And maybe the generatns behd are cled to listen. “One of the wonrful surpris of this time my life is that a iend of me rented a place on Fire Island,” the legendary gay beach paradise on Long Island. “I’d never really gone there. It felt like a place where you’d wear a Speedo, and I didn’t feel like I’d be good at that.” </p><p data-no-id="21" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0">But now, this stage of life, “It’s Heaven. It’s the most egalarian place. It’s like a Grateful Dead show. It’s all shap and siz, all ag. And I thk for the younger generatn, there’s a love and appreciatn for those who survived and are still there. It’s palpable and eply movg, and... <em>sexy</em> is the wrong word, but jt filled wh emotn.”</p><p data-no-id="22" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0">Not that he feels like he should be on the receivg end of this level of sexy rpect. “When I’m characterized as an elr, or anyone to me for advice, my first thg I thk is, <em>a, I don’t thk I’m old, and b, I lerally don’t know anythg about anythg</em>.” </p><p data-no-id="23" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0">Don’t believe .
