Nightgal Nightclub – stalwart of the Birmgham gay scene, and central to the dramatics. Especially popular wh bears, gby gays, football gays, and the slightly olr crowd, but ’s super clive and you’ll fd lots of girls here too. The Wellgton Hotel – This closed and was reopened as a gig-goers bar but ’s most certaly very gay iendly and they serve a nice pt.

The Birmgham Gay Village is an LGBTQ district next to the Che Quarter Birmgham cy centre, centred along Hurst Street, which hosts many LGBT-iendly bs. The Gay Village fally took s form the 1990s after the number of venu creased and gave the area more of a boundary, while the creasg number of bars rulted om an creasg number of ctomers and amount of diversy offered.

An assortment of the gay bars and clubs and around Hurst Street are, The Nightgale, The Village Inn, The Loft Lounge, The Siwalk, Missg, Boltz, Club Jter, En, The Equator Bar, The Chic Nightclub, and The Fox.

THE GREATT BARS BIRMGHAM'S GAY VILLAGE

The first Birmgham Gay Pri Weekend took place on 8–9 July 1972, one week after the first London Gay Pri Week, self the first Gay Pri Rally to take place outsi the Uned Stat. Although “hastily arranged and not very well nceived”, the Birmgham event featured danc, two “Gay Days” Cannon Hill Park and a march up New Street om the Bull Rg, culmatg a small rally on the steps of Birmgham Town Hall.

Acrdg to one of s anisers “Our aim was to announce ourselv and let Birmgham know gay people were here: ‘Here we are and here we’ll stay’” Two or three further such events were anised by Birmgham Gay Liberatn Front until the anisatn cled the mid 1970s.

Annual gay ftivals Birmgham rumed 1983 wh the first “Five Days of Fun”, origally known as “Gay Bm”.

Unlike the 1970s Pri weekends and the earlier “Gay Days”, Five Days of Fun was not tend as a polil statement but as a social event and celebratn.

Daytime and eveng events would take place throughout the cy’s ma gay bars and clubs the village – culmatg an It’s a Knockout petn between teams of the venu’ staff, held the garn/swimmg pool at The Grosvenor Hoe Hotel, Hagley Road, Edgbaston. Most of the followg photographs were taken at the Gay Pri event on the 28th of May 2016.

Frequent visors to the gay scene have had to fight agast velopment plans several tim over the last year to keep their ‘safe space. We went out to the Gay Village to fd out why ’s so important to the cy’s LGBT muny that we keep this area alive.

The performers 'We lerally have nowhere else we n go' Drag performers and events anisers Amber Cadavero and Pl Aleksandr shared the view that the Gay Village is their 'safe space' and they've been workg hard to keep the evolutn of the area full-swg. The duo have been the gay scene of Birmgham for around 25 years and have owned En Bar for over a . " Gary said that he's a great believer the need for the Gay Village as a safe space and feels as though they're so close to losg a space that has been part of their muny for so long.
