ABDUL MINTY, Permanent Reprentative of the Republic of South Ai, actg as morator of the panel, asked the panellists about the impact of certa ctoms, practic and laws on the human rights of lbian, gay, bisexual and transsexual persons, and whether such ctoms, practic and laws were pliance wh ternatnal law.
The Uned Natns human rights system, cludg Special Procr and Treaty Bodi, through General Comments, had been addrsg the issue of discrimatn and vlence agast lbian, gay, bisexual and transgenr persons for many years; was not a new topic at the Uned Natns. HANS YTTERBERG, Chairperson of the Council of Europe Expert Commtee on Discrimatn on Ground of Sexual Orientatn and Genr Inty, said vlence and discrimatn agast lbian, gay, bisexual and transgenr persons occurred everywhere the world.
Threats and vlence formed part of the everyday liv of lbian, gay, bisexual and transgenr persons, as well as vlatns to their right to a private life, eedom of exprsn, peaceful assembly, to work, or to tn.
GAY RIGHTS AS HUMAN RIGHTS
Stat were not only obliged to absta om terference to those rights, but also to actively protect and support lbian, gay, bisexual and transsexual persons and associatns.
IRINA KARLA BACCI, Vice-Print, Natnal Council for Lbian, Gay, Bisexual And Transgenr Persons Brazil, said that today 76 untri still had laws which crimalized same sex relatns between nsentg adults.
Lbian, gay, bisexual and transgenr persons were often kicked out of their hom, had lower tn levels, lived sub-human ndns and were often relegated to the margs of society.
