perds of my life. I was twenty-three years old and I knew that my days Mexi were numbered.</p><p class="paywall">My iend Montero, who worked for the Arts Council, had found me a stt teachg a wrg workshop that town, wh s hio name. First, to warm up, I had to tour the other wrg workshops the Arts Council had tablished throughout the regn. A b of a holiday the north to start off, Montero said, then you n get down to work Gómez Palac and fet all your problems. I don’t know why I accepted. I knew that unr no circumstanc would I settle down Gómez Palac. I knew that I wouldn’t stick to nng a wrg workshop some godforsaken town northern Mexi.</p><p class="paywall">I left Mexi Cy one morng on a b packed to pacy and began my tour. I went to San Luis Potosí, Aguaslient, Guanajuato, León—though probably not that orr. I n’t remember which town me first or how long I spent each. Then Torreón and Saltillo. I went to Durango as well.</p><p class="paywall">Fally, I arrived Gómez Palac and vised the Arts Council offic, where I met my future stunts. In spe of the heat, I uldn’t stop shiverg. The director, a plump, middle-aged woman wh bulgg ey, wearg a large prt drs featurg almost all of the state’s native flowers, took me to my lodggs: a seedy motel on the edge of town, next to a highway leadg nowhere.</p><div><div class="ConsumerMarketgUnThemedWrapper-iUTMTf jssHut nsumer-marketg-un nsumer-marketg-un--article-mid-ntent" role="prentatn" aria-hidn="te"><div class="nsumer-marketg-un__slot nsumer-marketg-un__slot--article-mid-ntent nsumer-marketg-un__slot---ntent"></div><div class="journey-un"></div></div></div><p class="paywall">She ed to pick me up herself every morng. She had an enormo sky-blue r, which she drove perhaps too boldly, though generally speakg she wasn’t a bad driver. It was an tomatic, and her feet barely reached the pedals. Invariably, the first thg we did was stop at a roadsi rtrant that was visible the distance om the motel, a reddish bump on the blue-and-yellow horizon. There we breakfasted on orange juice and Mexin-style eggs, followed by several cups of ffee, all paid for (I prume) wh Arts Council vouchers—not sh, any se.</p><p class="paywall">Then she would lean back her chair and talk about her life that northern town; her poetry, which had been published by a small lol prs subsidized by the Arts Council; and her hband, who didn’t unrstand the poet’s llg or the sufferg entailed. Meanwhile, I cha-smoked Bali cigarett and looked out the wdow at the highway, thkg about the disaster that was my life. Then we’d get back to her r and head off to the ma office of the Arts Council, a two-story buildg whose only reemg feature was an unpaved yard wh three tre and an abandoned, or unfished, garn, swarmg wh zombie-like adolcents, who were studyg patg, mic, or lerature. The first time I was there, I hardly noticed the yard. The send time, ma me shudr. None of this mak any sense, I thought, but ep down I knew that did make sense and that was what I found unbearably sad, to e a rather hyperbolic exprsn, though seemed perfectly accurate at the time. Maybe I was nfg sense wh necsy. Maybe I was jt a nervo wreck.</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-1 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall">I found hard to get to sleep at night. I had nightmar. Before gog to bed, I would make sure the door and the wdows of my room were securely and tightly shut. My throat always felt dry, and the only solutn was to drk water. I was ntually gettg up and gog to the bathroom to refill my glass. Sce I was up, I would check the door and the wdows aga to see that they were properly shut. Sometim I fot my fears and stayed at the wdow, lookg at the sert stretchg off to the dark. Then I went back to bed and closed my ey, but havg dnk so much water I soon had to get up aga to urate. And sce I was up I would check all the locks and then stand listeng to the distant sounds of the sert (the muffled hum of rs headg north or south) and lookg out of the wdow at the night. And so on until dawn, when I uld fally get some unbroken sleep, two or three hours at most.</p><p class="has-dropp has-dropp__lead-standard-headg paywall">On my last full day, while we were havg breakfast, the director asked about my ey. It’s bee I don’t sleep much, I said. Y, they’re bloodshot, she said, and changed the subject. That afternoon, as she was takg me back to the motel, she asked if I would like to drive for a b. I don’t know how to drive, I said. She burst out lghg and pulled onto the shoulr. A whe reigerated tck went past. I managed to read what was wrten on the si large blue letters: “<em class="small">the widow padilla’s meat</em>.” The tck had Monterrey license plat and the driver stared at wh a cursy that stck me as excsive. The director opened her door and got out. Get the driver’s seat, she said. I obeyed. She got to the passenger seat and orred me to go.</p><p class="paywall">I drove along the gray strip of highway nnectg Gómez Palac and the motel. When I reached the motel, I didn’t stop. I looked over at the director: she was sg—she didn’t md if I drove a b farther. Until then, both of had stared at the highway silence. But when the motel was behd she started talkg about her poetry, her work, and her sensive hband. When she had said her piece, she turned on the ssette player and put a tape: a woman sgg <em>rancheras</em>. The sger had a sad voice that was always a uple of not ahead of the orchtra. I’m her iend, the director said. What? I said. She’s a close iend of me, the director said. Ah. She’s om Durango, she said. You’ve been there, haven’t you? Y, I’ve been to Durango, I said. And what were the wrg workshops like? Worse than the on here, I replied, meang as a pliment, although she didn’t seem to take that way. She’s om Durango, but she liv Ciudad Juárez, she said. Sometim, when she’s gog back home to see her mother, she lls me up and I reanize my schle so I n go to Durango and spend a few days wh her. That’s nice, I said, keepg my ey on the road. I stay at her hoe—her mother’s hoe, actually, the director said. The two of sleep her room and spend hours talkg and listeng to rerds. Every now and then, one of go to the kchen to make ffee. I ually take oki wh me, La Regalada oki, her favore. And we drk ffee and eat oki. We’ve known each other sce we were fifteen. She’s my bt iend.</p><p class="paywall">On the horizon I uld see the highway disappearg to the hills. Night was begng to approach om the east. Days before, at the motel, I had asked myself, What lor is the sert at night? A stupid qutn, yet somehow I felt held the key to my future, or perhaps not so much my future as my pacy for sufferg. One afternoon, at the wrg workshop Gómez Palac, a boy asked me why I wrote poetry and how long I thought I would go on dog . The director wasn’t prent. There were five stunts the workshop: four boys and a girl. You uld tell om the way they drsed that two of them were very poor. The girl was short and th and her cloth were garish. The boy who asked the qutn should have been studyg at a universy; stead, he was workg a soap factory, the biggt and probably the only soap factory the state. Another boy was a waer an Italian rtrant, the other two were llege, and the girl was neher studyg nor workg.</p><div class="Contaer-bkChBi byNLHx"></div><p class="paywall">By chance, I replied. For a while, none of said anythg. I nsired the possibily of takg a job Gómez Palac and stayg there for the rt of my life. I had noticed a pair of pretty girls among the patg stunts the yard. Wh a b of luck, I might have managed to marry one of them. The prettier one also seemed to be the more nventnal. I imaged a long, plited engagement. I imaged a dark, ol hoe and a garn full of plants. And how long do you thk you’ll go on wrg? the boy who worked the soap factory asked aga. I uld have said anythg, but opted for simplicy. I don’t know, I said. What about you? I started wrg bee poetry sets me ee, sir, and I’m never gog to stop, he said, wh a se that barely hid his pri and termatn. As an answer, was too vague and clamatory to be nvcg, yet somehow gave me a glimpse of the factory worker’s life, not as was then but as had been when he was fifteen, or maybe twelve. I saw him nng or walkg through the outskirts of Gómez Palac, unr a sky that looked like a rocksli. I saw his iends and wonred how they uld possibly survive. When we me out of the classroom, the director was wag wh two guys who turned out to be civil servants employed by the state of Durango. My first thought was: They’re policemen, here to arrt me. The kids said goodbye and off they went, the skny girl wh one of the boys and the other three on their own. I followed them down the hallway wh s peelg walls, as if I had fotten to say somethg to one of them. From the door I saw them disappear at both ends of that street Gómez Palac.</p><p class="has-dropp has-dropp__lead-standard-headg paywall">The director said, She’s my bt iend. That was all. The highway was no longer a straight le. In the rearview mirror I uld see an enormo wall risg beyond the town. It took me a while to realize was the night. The sger on the ssette began to warble another song. The lyrics were about a remote village the north of Mexi. where everyone was happy except her. I had the imprsn that the director was cryg. Silent, dignified, unstoppable tears. But I uldn’t nfirm this imprsn. I had to keep my ey on the road. The director took out a handkerchief and blew her nose. Turn the headlights on, I heard her say a barely dible voice. I kept drivg.</p><p class="paywall">Turn on the headlights, she repeated, and whout wag for a rponse she leaned over and did herself. Slow down, she said after a while, her voice stronger now, as the sger reached the fal not of her song. What a sad song, I said, jt for somethg to say.</p><p class="paywall">I stopped the r by the si of the road and got out. It wasn’t yet pletely dark, but was no longer day. The land all around and the hills to which the highway stretched were a ep, tense sha of yellow that I have never seen anywhere else. As if the light (though seemed to me not so much light as pure lor) were charged wh somethg, I didn’t know what, but might well have been eterny. I was immediately embarrassed to have had such a thought. I stretched my legs. A r whizzed past, honkg s horn. I told him where to go wh a gture. Maybe wasn’t jt a gture. Maybe I yelled, Go fuck yourself, and the driver saw or heard me. But ’s unlikely, like most thgs this story. In any se, when I thk about the driver all I n see is my own image ozen his rearview mirror: my hair is still long; I’m th, wearg a nim jacket and a pair of awful, oversize glass.</p><p class="paywall">The r pulled up several metr ont of . The driver didn’t get out or back up or honk the horn aga, but his mere prence straed the space that we were now, some sense, sharg. Ctly, I walked around to the director’s si of the r. She rolled down her wdow and asked me what had happened. Her ey were bulgg more than ever. I said I didn’t know. It’s a man, she said, and slid across to the driver’s seat. I got to the seat she had left. It was hot and moist, as if she had a fever. Through the wdshield I uld see the man’s silhouette; like , he was facg forward, toward the le of the highway begng to wd s way through the hills.</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-2 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall">It’s my hband, the director said wh her ey fixed on the statnary r, as if she were talkg to herself. Then she flipped the ssette over and turned up the volume. Sometim my iend lls me up, she said, when she’s tourg towns she don’t know. Once, she lled om Ciudad Maro. She’d been sgg all night at the Oil Workers Unn buildg and she lled me at four the morng. Another time she lled om Reosa. That’s nice, I said. Not pecially, the director said. She jt lls. Sometim she needs to talk. If my hband answers, she hangs up.</p><p class="paywall">For a while, neher of said anythg. I imaged the director’s hband wh the telephone his hand. He picks up the telephone, says, Hello, who is ? Then he hears someone hang up at the other end and he hangs up, too, almost by reflex. I asked the director if she wanted me to get out and say somethg to the driver of the other r. There’s no need, she said. Which seemed a reasonable answer to me, although fact was crazy. I asked what her hband was gog to do, if really was her hband. He’ll stay there until we go, the director said. Then we’d better go now, I said. The director seemed to be lost thought, though later occurred to me that maybe all she was dog was closg her ey and listeng to her iend om Durango, drkg that song down to the very last drop. Then she turned on the ignn, pulled out slowly, and passed the r. I looked out the wdow as we went by, but the driver turned his back to and I uldn’t see his face.</p><p class="paywall">Are you sure was your hband? I asked as we sped off aga toward the hills. No, the director said, and started lghg. I don’t thk was. I started lghg, too. The r looked like his, she said, almost chokg wh lghter, but probably wasn’t him. So might have been? I said. Not unls he’s changed his license plat, the director said. At which pot I unrstood that the whole thg had been a joke. I shut my ey. Then we me out of the hills and to the sert: a pla swept by the headlights of rs headg north or back toward Gómez Palac. It was already night.</p><p class="paywall">Now we’re g to a very special place, the director said. Those were her words: very special.</p><p class="paywall">I wanted you to see this, she said proudly. This is one of my favore thgs. She pulled over and stopped a sort of rt area, although was really no more than a patch of ground big enough for tcks to park on. Lights were sparklg the distance: a town or a rtrant. We didn’t get out. The director poted toward somethg—a stretch of highway that mt have been about five kilometr away, maybe ls, maybe more. She even wiped the si of the wdshield wh a cloth so I uld see better. I looked: I saw the headlights of rs. From the way the beams of light were swivellg, there mt have been a bend the highway. And then I saw some green shap the sert. Did you see? the director asked. Y, lights, I replied. The director looked at me: her bulgg ey gleamed, as do, no doubt, the ey of the small mammals native to the hospable environs of Gómez Palac, the state of Durango. Then I looked aga the directn she had dited. At first, I uldn’t see anythg, only darkns, the sparklg lights of that rtrant or town. Some rs passed and the beams of their headlights rved the space two. When I got to my room, I swched on the light, took off my jacket, and drank some water straight om the tap. Then I went to the wdow. Her r was still the parkg lot. I opened the door and was h the face by a gt of sert air. The r was empty. A ltle farther off, bi the highway, I saw the director, who looked as if she were ntemplatg a river or the landspe of another pla. The way she was standg, wh her arms slightly raised, she might have been talkg to the air or recg, or playg statu, like a ltle girl.</p><p class="paywall">I didn’t sleep well. At dawn, the director me to fetch me. She took me to the b statn and told me that if I ever wanted to e back I would be very wele at the workshop. I said I would have to thk about . She said that was fe, bt to thk thgs over. Then she said, A hug. I bent down and hugged her. The seat I had been given was on the other si of the b, so I didn’t see her leave. The last thg I remember, vaguely, is her standg there, lookg at the b, or perhaps at her watch.
