THE ULTIMATE GUI TO GAY CENTRAL AMERI

Manuel Anton (and the neighborg village of Quepos) is another gay-iendly Costa Ri travel statn; several bars and hotels aren't jt clive, but gay-owned. The most acmodatg statn for gay and lbian travelers is San Pedro Town on the island of Ambergris Caye, which is also the untry's most popular tourist statn. Guatemala is one of the more homophobic untri Central Ameri, due to the primarily nservative Catholic populatn and a strong machismo culture.

While public displays of affectn (PDAs) are owned upon (particularly by the Catholic Church), there are several openly gay-iendly bars and diss the pal.

While discrimatn on the basis of sexual orientatn is prohibed El Salvador, homophobia is wispread, and vlence toward gays and lbians isn't unmon. But those are different blog posts – this is about gay thgs so here we go:Gay Bar/Club Scene: Frida’s Ati Upstairs Bar: Frida’s is a well-loted, touristy rtrant (wh credible margaras and a Sunday bnch to die for) but UPSTAIRS, at night, the rtrant turns lols dance club! Frida’s is Lbian-owned, not exclively gay but has very gay monthly events and weekly dance parti featurg techno, electronic and hoe mic wh an always open and welg atmosphere. The Backyard Bar and Rtrant: When we first got to Antigua, I asked around the expat pag for remendatns on gay plac and several people said to me, go to the back porch of Backyard Bar – sound super sketchy to me.

Red's Bar: we did not go to this bar and is a ltle odd to me bee on the surface seems like a straight sport's bar but we noticed they often advertise VERY gay events, hosted the Miss Gay Guatemala pageant and are listed as a gay men's bar on a few Guatemala pag. Rtrant Scene:Antigua is full of great rtrants and a bunch of medcre on, too but here are a few fantastic rtrants where you n also feel fortable beg yourself– Frida’s, Angie Angie, Cact Grill, Osteria Franc, Caoba Farms Café, Samsara, Rabow Café (don’t let the name fool you, this is not a gay tablishment but ’s a very chill, progrsive environment)Tattoo Shop: Superr Tattoos – Miguel owner, artistIf you would be terted a Week-Long (LGBT) Group Travel event wh Antigua, where we arrange everythg but your flight, please shoot an email at and we’ll keep you the loop! Currently, Niragua do not have anti-gay laws on the books but is still not a totally acceptg untry and has a long way to go before gay marriage or regnn of our relatnships.

When we were Granada, we saw a gaggle of drag queens walkg down the street together followed by a band of gay boys – clearly off to a party.

We also heard of a bar lled Mi Terra, that is not “gay” but where the gays we didn't fd a ton of bars, we did fd a ton of gay-owned or gay-iendly hotels, though we only stayed one of them ourselv.

WELE TO GLOBALGAYZ – GAY TRAVEL, CULTURE AND LGBT HUMAN RIGHTS

) We know there are two gay bars – we did not vis eher of them but here they are:Tabu - gets really good reviews, has weekly drag shows and events, dance bar Bar Q – i n't fd a webse for this bar but we were told s a nice neighborhood bar wh excellent dj's on the weekends. San Juan Del Sur San Juan Del Sur do not have a gay bar but there are often gay “events” gog on at var hotels and bars by promoters.

The reputatn is served – dark, soft sand, great wav, unbelievable gay nightlife, however, (and also yoga, healthy rtrants, malls and hipster f) the place to be is San Salvador. They have all of your typil gay event parti and some really, really random lol live entertament – but a good time will be had, damn Sndavia is a bath hoe – word on the street is that this one is as much a club and bar as is a bathhoe.

There is very much a live and let live attu there, more than any other Central Amerin untry we spent time even though gay marriage is still illegal.

Sometim, bee the mic everywhere is so good Costa Ri (and so, so gay) you wont know whether you are a gay bar, a straight bar, a rtrant or a walmart. You should jt check out the entire untry and feel pretty fortable beg yourself – but for foc – lets talk about the two big gay hotspots and a uple of honorable mentns:Manuel Anton Manuel Anton is the origal Costa Rin gay mec. That beach has sce been purchased by a rort and is no longer accsible but you’ll fd plenty of gays on any of the beach beg their happy, openly gay Mogambo: This small neighborhood bar is part of and ss on top of Raphael Terraza’s rtrant.

GAY USA TRAVEL GUI: A GAY COUPLE TRAVELG THE UNED STAT OF AMERI

Barr Eslante is my favore neighborhood, full of rtrants, bars, hipsters, gay people, pretty tree-led streets and liquor-filled ice cream.

There is a gay rort San Jose named Colours but we didn't stay there, has gotten mixed reviews ( fairns, nothg bad, jt rangg om good to medcre) and they ignored our requt to e check out so all i n tell you is that exists and may be a good night's stop on your way to Manuel Anton. There is also a rtrant that serv an honorable mentn here:Arbol De Seda: Its owned by a Pevian lbian chef who also happens to be the first gay person to get legally married the untry (though, is still not legal - funny story that you n check out here. Wh the legalizatn of gay marriage Colombia, affordable pric, betiful nature, and some of the iendlit people the world, there has never been a better time to e and disver Gay Cartagena.

And remember one thg, there are parts of the most gay-iendly ci or untri that are not particularly iendly to the gay populatn.

AFFORDABLE GAY VATN TOWNS

Cartagena Gay Beach – There is no unofficial gay beach town, but ask around, and you’ll quickly fd out that Playa Hollywood is where all the gays love to head for a day the sun. Loted on the Pacific Coast, this is said to be the LGBTQ+ hotspot of the untry, but you should bear md that ters more to gay men than women or trans and nonbary people. Meg and her wife Ldsay n the number one lbian travel blog, Meg’s LGBTQ subject matter expertise has been featured The New York Tim, Condé Nast Traveler, Cosmopolan, Go magaze, Out Traveler, Gay Star News, Buzzfeed, Matador Network, Ele Daily, Korea Observer, and India's The Qut.

In the latt stallment of our Lbian & Gay Travel seri, Sam of shar why he thks is so powerful to be out as a gay traveler, pecially South Ameri, where many untri are still rather nservative when to same-sex relatnships. What I didn’t realize was how much travelg South Ameri would reveal to me about my own feelgs toward what means to be gay. Unfortunately, this was the se time and time aga wh most of the gay people we met South Ameri: they felt trapped the closet by their culture and allowed this bigotry to ntue around them by stayg si rather than g out and mandg acceptance.
