Now, Harvey was <a href=">posg Tim Square</a> and cnchg out glossy arena-rock. When mastream mic journalism was still abundant, part of Pchfork’s role, as an upstart onle ze, was servg as a rrective to thoughtls advance praise. But 2003’s <em>It’s the On Who’ve Cracked That the Light Sh Through</em> was too sweet and lumo to serve vrl. But on 2016’s <a href="><em>Moth</em></a>, a btersweet love letter to New York Cy and the group’s fal album, the pair nailed down their novative, stantly satisfyg die pop. The album wasn’t exactly ignored, but served more—how do you not move to “Ch-Chg,” a ph-and-pull electro-pop song origally meant for Beyoncé? Or shed a tear to “Cryg Public,” the album’s crtfallen flectn pot? Prce exam his own work and the history of Black mic (both “Milogy” and the jazz fn-gospel of “If Eye Was the Man Ur Life”), gets ntemplative (“Reflectn”), and sgs the blu (“On the Couch”). The band lay on as thick as the era’s polyter double-kns, ntemplatg “What if someone liked the Beatl <em>and</em> the Rollg Ston?” whout takg much further. Grim’ psycho-pop masterpiece was vibrant, trite, and fuckg bananas the bt way. Could be that some ridual elatn seeped to the next release cycle? <em>Art Angels</em> was the sound of Grim shaphiftg a swift, lorful explosn. On the subsequent <a href="><em>Miss Anthropocene</em></a>, she sounds like a rbon py of herself—fad and ls fed. There are dividual songs here that move the needle: the spectacular, tailed “My Name Is Dark,” for stance, but the album self suffers the same problem as poorly wrten screenplays: thgs jt happen, wh no service to the overall story. Wh his long-awaed official solo but g out, was time to rrect the rerd. <em>Sir Luc Left Foot: The Son of Chi Dty</em> is still a good time—“She Blockas” and “Shutterbugg” n bounce wh the bt—but there are other qutnable moments that may have been charably overlooked. The ghastly morn rock crossover attempt featurg a band lled Vonnegut. The old man-isms cryg a lack of real hip-hop. The T.I. sex raps. There is a lot of room to mislculate; some weaker tracks show up toward the end, and the sgg is sometim ls than polished—the bt early-era Lana material is the follow-up <em>Paradise</em> EP—but <em>Born to Die</em> turned out to be a sign of thgs to e, like genre-agnostic pop ballads wh hip-hop beats, and the arch, prsive languor that’s more mastream than ever. I don’t disagree; if sr are meant to dite a work’s longevy or impact, the origal review is validated by the historic rerd. Daft Punk’s send album, <em>Disvery,</em> is the centerpiece of their reer, an album that transcend the robots’ club roots and rippled through the s that followed. Then, too, there was the whole issue of Daft Punk’s much-ballyhooed return to vtage dis played on “real” stments, which, set agast the neon backdrop of the early-’10s EDM boom, felt like a big al. Throw Italo-dis godfather Grg Moror solemnly reuntg the story of his life, and who uld dare to doubt the monumental gravas of the duo’s fourth stud album? Mark Richardson’s <a href=">review</a> acknowledged the hype while attemptg to look beyond : “My gus is that people will be listeng to <em>Random Accs Memori</em> a hence, jt like we’re still listeng to <em>Disvery</em> now.” Eight years later, I’m not so sure about that. It’s not that people aren’t listeng to ; the album has racked up nearly 1.5 billn plays on Spotify alone. <em>RAM</em> has some jams, but don’t feel pivotal the same way that <em>Disvery</em> did. Listeng recently, I uld appreciate the cematic twkle and punishg heft of songs like “Untled” and “The New,” moments where Interpol feel more like experimental die rock spired by post-punk and shoegaze than jt another ripoff band. The album was the perfect salve for me, a listener who wanted to pe the mundane drears of middle school while still hopg to hear my extreme emotns reflected back at me through the prism of absurdist folklore. Spektor wr stori that radiate anguish and valor equal measure; treachero Biblil characters reimaged as heartbroken lovers, a quirky cy dweller who romanticiz only eatg tanger right before she solemnly reunts her lover’s overdose. Spektor’s storytellg is jarrg and disorientg, pletely engrossg and troublg all at once, a mix of Fna Apple’s cynicism and Joanna Newsom’s ecstatic fantasy. She’s a classilly traed pianist too, and every note she plays is full of rtraed mourng. (“Is [Charli XCX] sendg up pop’s shallow triumphalism? Or rercg ?”) The <em>Vroom Vroom</em> EP didn’t offer a clear answer, pairg ivolo lyrics that sound more or ls like “Lambhi, biki, eenie-meanie zucchi” wh squelchg productn—urty of SOPHIE—more jarrg than prevly shown on Charli’s work. Nowadays, don’t seem that extreme.
