Hatcher ntued to handle the mail and is nsired to be Gayville’s first postmaster, wh the Gayville post office startg on March 18th. On April 23rd, Gayville’s first blsed event occurred—the birth of Gay Keh, 9 ¼ pounds, born to Mr. William June 1st, Gayville’s charter was filed at the unty urt hoe.

Collamer who had been mayor of Yankton erected a buildg Gayville October of 873 tendg to go to the t and hardware bs. In the November 23rd issue of a Yankton paper, “The Gayville Hoe” a large and first class hotel n by Iver Bagstad on the Temperance plan, was mentned.

The prent buildg, which was a hotel until the 1950’s, was built by Iver Bagstad 1879, so “The Gayville Hoe” mt have preced .

GAYVILLE

Hard took a job as Gayville’s first school teacher but his Co said that this untry was good for nothg but Indians and grasshoppers and he returned on the next tra to Oh. This hoe is still Gayville on the rner of Iverson and Washgton and is occupied by the Fosters. Spangler, alternated preachg every other Sunday at Gayville and Mecklg and there was talk of buildg a Unn Church 1880, Gayville had a populatn of 130.

The great flood of 1881 was an historil event for Gayville, as well as the areas around. Gayville started a municipal band 1890 nducted by the Milwkee pot agent until 1894. 1891, Gayville purchased a hand drawn hose rt om the Yankton Fire Department, when Yankton progrsed to a fire wagon wh hors.

The Gayville saloon, n by Bert Ely and Louis Langfeld and loted where the bank now stands had stalled a set of fixtur worth about $ Wm.

McMaster had e to Gayville om near Sux Cy, Iowa, to start a bank. That same year, Gayville was rporated and elected s first tste: Jim Harn, Hans Myron and Jack McKay.

Castle and her son, Lloyd; Stck and Pete Lee operated a livery barn wh dray service and real tate bs; Gee Mortensen operated the Gayville Dg Store wh Albert Bengston charge of prcriptns, and wh an up-to-date soda founta: L. In addn to their general merchandise bs, they handled lumber, other buildg material, al, wood and 1908, The Gayville Observer reported that about a e of cement walks had been put down through the summer. From the 1919 Gayjuan, we learn that Fred Williams was now nng the Lloyd Hotel, L.

Reed was managg a Co-op grocery store, Albert Melville was manager of the Gayville Elevator Co., Lars Olson was nng the lumber yard and E. Olon was out of the implement bs and operatg the Gayville Opera hoe, showg only the bt and most entertag tnal pictur. A story the Observer tells about Gayville’s Experience wh bands: The Bagstad and Aaseth store had been broken to several tim, so Loyal and Pl Hanson, proprietors of the store at that time cid to sleep the store and guard .

Sux Cy police intified the sla band as Le DeLear, a notor police character who had severed two prison the last cint the cizens of Gayville beme so alarmed at the repeated robbery attempts that they formed a vigilante group provid wh arms and ammunn. Gayville suffered the same problems as other small towns durg the prsn, drought and dt storms and grasshoppers of the thirti. The small town bs were so directly pennt on the farmer, that when farm e was cut, many of them fold and the towns grew fact that Gayville’s bank was able to re-open s doors probably kept om beg a ghost town the 30’s.

The Uned Natnal Bank, Gayville Branch-Marv Schoon, Executive Vice-print: the general store, recelty sold by Jim Orton to Walt Huber; a newly rated fé operated by the Schelskis; a bar and liquor store and a weldg shop operated by the Don Kfmans; Olson’s Body Shop, operated by John and Keh Olson; Jerry’s Auto Repair Shop, operated by Jerry Wuebben; a service statn n by the Lavern Jepsens; a gasole livery service operated by Eugene Olson and the Gayville Gra and lg elevator managed by Merle Ludwig and the town barber Mr. Tillie Cowman retired 1965, 1000 feet of new siwalk was poured on the ma street of Gayville wh volunteers om both the town and ral area.
