Gayndah, a pleasant ral service centre loted on the Burt River, li at the heart of Queensland's cs area and proudly claims to be 'The Orange Capal of Queensland'. While many ways a typil Queensland ral town, Gayndah has a number of special attractns: has an excellent mm wh a number of historic ho; the Archer's Lookout offers a fe vantage pot over the town; Mellors Drapery Store has one of the few functng "flyg fox" left the untry; and, to plement the town's "orange" theme, the town clock has been signed the shape of a cs tree. The buildg which was named the Gayndah and District Soldiers Memorial Hall and Council Chambers was officially opened on the 19th July 1935 by the Hon E Hanlon memoratn of the employment relief loan the Gayndah Town Council had received om the State Government orr to nstct the buildg. Loted Simon Street off Capper Street, the Gayndah Mm is an excellent ral mm wh exhibs cludg an 18th century grandfather clock, a Leyland tck which dat back to 1913, and the Ban Ban buggy which dat to 1896. Archer's Lookout (accsed by drivg up Peapple Street and followg the signs) is loted on the top of the De and Duchs Mounta where a panoramic view over the town and the surroundg untrysi offers an tertg perspective on Gayndah although the lie of the land means that the Burt River, so important to the town, n only be glimpsed.

The Gayndah district was settled as a part of the great pastoral expansn of the late 1840s, and Archer's Lookout near the Gayndah high school marks a hill memorialised as the place where Thomas Archer surveyed the Burt Valley. Gayndah's ma thoroughfare, Capper Street, has four s listed on the Queensland herage register: the urt hoe (1920s), Mellors shop (1922), the former shire hall (1930s) and the war memorial (1921). Set on the banks of the Burt River Queensland, Gayndah is reported to have once rivalled Brisbane and Ipswich to bee the pal of the new lony of Brisbane (first known as the ‘Moreton Bay Settlement’) and Ipswich had been settled somewhat earlier than Gayndah, they are both classified as ‘ci’ – hence, the actualy that as a town, Gayndah, is, fact, Queensland’s olst.. The 14th May 1848, Thomas and Charl Archer left Cooyar, jt over 200 km south of Gayndah, wh a party of 16, which clud shepherds, bullock drivers and hut keepers; 2 drays, drawn by 10 Oxen each; 3 hors, 1 mare and foal; pl more hors which were owned by the men of the party; 2 tons of flour; 1, 500 pounds of sugar; 2.
