Marv gaye remds you that he is not jt a handsome soul sger wh one of the greatt voic on earth, but a full human beg wh some ugly flaws. Most of the album is generally pretty listenable though and gaye of urse generally has a great ear for what works milly, but do dip s to to pretty unflatterg terrori multiple tim.
The ntext of marv’s nightmare divorce om anna gordy gaye preces the mic self, but i gotta say - for an album like this that liv or di on the strength of pellg lyrics, a lot of this rerd feels pretty unrwrten. The rt of the relevant tracks rly feel like ad-lib retreads of the same thgs gaye said on the aforementned song. ” the moments where gaye attempts to surpass this funk and branch out to a different topic (namely ‘a funky space rernatn’) both fall flat their own right and kneep the rerd’s overarchg ncept.
Marv Gaye isn't Stevie Wonr, though: the latter is a force of pure tellect, whilst the former feels his way to the sublime.
