In the sprg of 1992, Milwkee wrer Will Fellows began terviewg 75 gay men, ag 25 to 84, who'd grown up farm fai throughout the Midwt. Fellows, himself a gay man raised on a Wisns dairy farm, knew that many mal like himself, who'd subsequently fled to larger metropolan areas, felt like outsirs among their urban unterparts.
Fellows' goal was to give voice to the experienc of ral gay men who were typilly overlooked or ignored by gay urban culture — or else, as he wrote, simultaneoly stereotyped and romanticized as wholome and virile "untry bumpks wh rosy cheeks, ready to be plucked if they venture to the big cy. The oute of Fellows' terviews was his 1996 book Farm Boys: Liv of Gay Men From the Rural Midwt, a pilatn of 36 personal narrativ of gay men, most of whom had abandoned ral livg.
