Ford “the father of Amerin dramatists, ” Gayler found succs rooted the New York theatril scene, and some of his works e New York as a dramatic settg, such as Lights and Shadows of New York and his novel Out of the Streets, a Story of New York Life. Yet Clap mentns Gayler a discsn of his appreciatn for drama that isn’t necsarily “High Art” (Figaro 13 Feb. 1866), scribg Gayler’s The Child-Stealer as an example of necsary “low edy” (Miller 30).

Gayler’s 1879 play Sleepy Hollow: or, The headls horseman: a ic pastoral opera three acts adapts the fictnal material of Washgton Irvg, a wrer greatly admired by the equenters of Pfaff’s. Dcribed by Thomas Butler Gunn as a “tall, burlylish man wh an over-rich plenty of self-teem, ” Gayler was a fixture on the Pfaff’s social scene (Sentill). Gunn also wr that Gayler was to be Edor of an unnamed new publitn which would be filled wh “stealgs” (plagiarized works and unpaid ntributns (11. Paradoxilly, Gayler was one of the men intified by Frank Bellew as "playwrights registerg their dramatic works before the first pyright law went to effect" (Miller 52). While his flowg beard often led visors at Pfaff’s to mistake him for Walt Whman, Gayler was a Pfaff’s regular long before Whman arrived at the scene.

A Brooklyn rint om Whman’s neighborhood, as well as his precsor at the Tim, Gayler may have troduced Whman to other Pffafians and spired him wh his reer trajectory (Karbiener 13). Gayler’s relatnship wh Whman appears to have soured, however, after Whman replaced Gayler as edor of the Brooklyn Daily Eagle.

’" Gay Wilson Allen suggts that this was a "gdge attack" prompted by Whman’s succsn of Gayler at the Tim.

Acrdg to Allen, Gayler lived near the Whmans on Myrtle Avenue and never fave Walt for replacg him at the Tim (242). Gayler is listed as one of the “few survivors of the old assembly” who still gathered at Pfaff’s the 1870’s after the bohemians left (Parry 61; Stovall 308).
