Part of what ma this reveal so fantastic is the characterizatn of William and how he breaks stereotyp of what a gay character looks and sounds like. We’re so ed to seeg the gay character a story as nothg but a walkg stereotype, someone flamboyant and characterized as a girl’s bt iend.
That’s not to say that overly-flamboyant gay characters are a bad thg, but a world where all media portrays a gay guy as flamboyant and fun ’s a ltle tratg to see an entire mographic forced to this one character type. It mak sense that durg the William’s (likely) last holiday season he would want to fd his partner and apologize for leavg, and I’m so happy that this is how the show went about tellg that William is gay. However, when to normalizg gay characters on TV and makg sure they e across as normal people who happen to like the same sex, the Pearsons’ acceptg nature is gog to prove to be an valuable lson on how to do jt that.
Though some of that live big ci n feel like half of the world is gay, 's a stark difference om many livg small towns.
