In 1966, La Crosse's gays and lbians beme more visible to non-queers thanks to the first gay bar, "Michael's" which operated until 1969 on Third Street South, between Kg Street and Jay Street. It was a mixed lbian and gay bar and was a godsend for muny members who would otherwise have to travel to the Tw Ci or Madison. Its owner, Michael, opened other gay bars: first "The Red Ln" on 120 Third Street, which he operated om 1970 to 1976 and primarily attracted workg-class women and llege stunts.
Hanson then sold the property to two other gay men, who kept a gay and lbian bar om 1976 to 1981. He was out, open, and supported muny activi, beg one of the few lears that helped to brg together the many gay and lbian cliqu town who were divid by social class. While Michael's bar was listed jt a sgle natnal Gay Bar Guis 1973, we have been unable to lote listed any Wisns LGBT media, or any advertisements or photos.
