functns as both a wk and a provotn. The three sger-songwrers who make up the group—<a href=">Phoebe Bridgers</a>, <a href=">Julien Baker</a>, and <a href=">Lucy Dac</a>—are all succsful solo die-rock stars, who have amassed overlappg but highly specific fan bas over the past . After crossg paths while tourg, they released a twenty-two-mute, self-tled jot EP, 2018, and found themselv the subject of fur hype. <em>Newsweek</em> <a href=">clared</a> them “the year’s most promisg die-rock supergroup.” NME lled the project “astonishg” and gave five stars. The women only played a handful of tour dat as a un before spltg off to make new solo albums. Still, for the past five years, they have field nstant quiri about whether they’ll be gettg back together to make a full-length rerd. So, when they fally did, the rerd beme “the rerd,” an LP released on Friday—s tle a punch le about the impossible weight of makg mic unr such outsized anticipatn. Although the band’s name is another sardonic reference, to the flated praise that tends to adhere to young male rock micians, boygeni now fds self the ironic posn of beg the object of s own kd of fated cultural anotment. When <em>Rollg Stone</em> announced the LP, earlier this year, they did so by puttg Bridgers, Baker, and Dac on the ver, styled the exact same sus that the members of <a href=">Nirvana</a> wore for their inic 1994 ver of the magaze.</p><p class="paywall">The “rock band,” as an object of public fascatn, feels a b archaic the days. Mil llaboratns still happen all the time, but they tend to manift as transient llisns between solo artists. We are the goln age of the gut verse, whereas the supergroup, which each member has the charisma and the billg of a ont person, feels a b like a throwback. The boygeni members have all, the past, publicly exprsed an allergy to the modifitn and cultishns that wh beg a phenomenon. (The Nirvana parison ntu beyond the outfs.) The ver of “the rerd” is a photo of the three micians’ matchg tattoos of teeth, spired by their 2018 song “Be The Hand,” about phg away tsive fans. They’ve risted the label “supergroup,” even while acknowledgg that “si project” is too mimizg a term for an album that they’ve all set asi a full year to promote. But they’ve also kd of leaned to an old-school rock-and-roll mythos, makg playful allns to famo mil team-ups of the past, cludg “Tr,” the 1987 platum rerd ma by Dolly Parton, Lda Ronstadt, and Emmylou Harris. The ver of their EP mimics a ver of a 1969 Crosby, Stills, and Nash album. The boygeni members share a generatnal knack for makg a preëmptive reference orr to assure you that they nnot really mean —or n they?</p><p class="paywall">This overtermed sense of a band about to blow, and the easily nsumable narrative of separable-B.F.F. band members, might seem spic if the mic that they ma wasn’t unniably good. The EP was an amb, supremely tchy set of songs. What lacked hn—each artist clearly brought two of her own posns to show-and-tell wh the group— ma up for ltro melodi and bewchg lyril reas. I’ve never liked Bridgers more than when she sgs “Me & My Dog,” the fuzzed-out banger that has bee the EP’s biggt h, g dienc, durg the band’s few live shows, to scream-sg the self-pretg le “I wanna be emaciated!” Bridgers, who is twenty-eight years old wh ice-blond hair and a health-goth style, has the most mastream followg of the boygeni members for her gngy elliptil koans about sunbaked sorrow. Of the three, she is the only one to have performed a set on “Saturday Night Live”—durg which she smashed an electric guar, promptg a rash of pearl-clutchy thk piec—or to have her personal life picked apart gossip lumns. And yet, when she performs wh boygeni, she sounds ls like a Sylvia Plath of the palms and more open to h, even optimistic, ways to exprs herself.</p><p class="paywall">The EP marked a focsg of the other women’s talents, too. Baker, a pete, sprely twenty-seven-year-old Tennseean who was raised an evangelil fay, wr mic more out of the emo/straight-edge tradn than her bandmat. Her searchg, plative songs sometim sound like sermons, and her vibratols voice always seems dangeroly close to breakg, as on “Stay Down,” a song she onted on the EP which she par herself to a sner beg phed unr the water before repeatedly yawpg “So I stay down!” Lucy Dac, a tall, twenty-seven-year-old bte om Richmond, Virgia, wh the creamy plexn and crimson pout of a Sargent portra, has the most unique voice of the group—a hky mezzo-soprano, like Joni Mchell if she had retaed her upper range spe her nite hab—and her songs tend to be more vted poetic alln. In her bt track on the EP, “Salt the Wound,” she sgs of a toxic lover, “You take and you take / Like silks up my sleeve.” Dac brgs a sense of w to all of her songs, and wh boygeni she seemed to be tryg to dazzle her bandmat wh wordplay. “You butter me up,” she sgs on the EP, “and you s down to eat.”</p><div class="Contaer-bkChBi byNLHx"></div><p class="paywall">The LP, by parison, sounds like the work of a group newly sistent that they are a uned mil enty. Observant fans will still easily be able to pick out which songs are “Phoebe songs” vers “Julien songs” vers “Lucy songs.” But there is a new level of tertextualy among the three sgers, whose hearty generosy and palpable eagerns to be together seem to temper the possibily of any one voice beg domant. The openg track, “Whout You Whout Them,” is a dulcet, one-mute a-ppella dty that uld easily be a found rerdg om Appalachia (or a nod to the folk harmoni on “Tr”). The lyrics—wrten by Dac, also the group’s arch sentimentalist—exprs gratu for havg met one another. “Thank your father before you, / his mother before him,” they sg harmony. “Who would I be whout you, whout them?” This is the kd of rhapsodic romanticism that flows out of the early days of close female iendship, when you are not sure if you are love wh the other person or jt love wh the fact that you fally have someone to talk to. That this ghy affectn is trichotomo is part of the boygeni allure—three n be a msy number when to iends, lovers, and bandmat, but, so far, the Bridgers, Dac, and Baker triangle is rehgly equilateral. To listen to their mic is to partake, virly, the joy of their impassned entanglement. In a new, nearly fifteen-mute <a href=">mic vio</a> lled, simply, “the film”—directed by the actor Kristen Stewart—the band engag a slow-motn, three-way make-out ssn while vered blue pat.</p><p class="paywall">In other ways, too, “the rerd” is a story of mutual revelatn and the many ways that n unfold. “$20,” a guar-heavy road-trip rambler that opens wh Baker sgg “It’s a bad ia and I’m all about ,” is a different kd of Amerina—motorcycl and ill-advised trips to Reno, the reckls imagery of the newly botted. The mood shifts aga wh “Ey I’m Sorry,” the next track, wh Bridgers takg the lead to sg about her vacillatg state of md. “I’m twenty-seven and I don’t know who I am,” Bridgers sgs, “but I know what I want.” Dac then pulls up wh “Te Blue,” a honeyed o to a loyal pann. “It feels good to be known so well,” she croons. The first four tracks—a third of the album’s trim llectn of twelve—n the gamut of boygeni emotns. There’s haphazard dirtbag mararie, shared self-stctive tennci, and heartfelt l of tribute, and the rt of the rerd toggl among the stat as each of the women step to sg. But “the rerd” also emphasiz the three members’ abily to meld when a song lls for , as on “Not Strong Enough,” the most rad-iendly tune on the LP. When the band’s label released the album’s lyrics, they sent around a lor-d PDF notg who wrote which le. Some songs—such as the gooey slow dance “Revolutn 0,” which ntas the Bridgers lyrics “I don’t want to die. / That’s a lie,” or the short, sweet “Leonard Cohen,” which Dac sgs “I am not an old man havg an existential crisis / at a Buddhist monastery”—are overwhelmgly one lor, the product of a sgle thor. “Not Strong Enough,” by ntrast, is a rabow on the page. At the end of the song, all three women sg the rea “Always an angel, never a god” over and over, and the repetn builds to a phoric effect. But no two tracks on the album have much mon, and s grab-bag approach to genre feels like another generatnal flex. “Satanist” sounds like a Weezer bop, whereas “Revolutn 0” has the gentle lilt of an <a href=">Elltt Smh</a> homage. The ethos holdg the band together is one of experimentatn and fond alln rather than loyalty to any one visn. All three micians me of age the era of shufflg playlists and llapsg styl, when the boundari between rock, folk, hip-hop, and electronic beme so membrano that the tegori began to lose meang. By ntlg stadium-ready, almost stupidly hooky jams agast hhed atic medatns, the boygeni members seem to take an unencumbered view of what a “rock album” should be. They <em>uld</em> be any kd of band they want to be, but the feelg their mic evok, a seawg between clowng and ndor, is more important than sonic nsistency. Bridgers sgs not once but several tim on the rerd about beg “tired” and “exhsted,” one of her fallback rhetoril mov. Baker’s lead songs are the most buoyant and r, and they help keep the album’s energy level up when thgs risk gettg too heavy. But the band choos to end the rerd on a ser note. In “Letter to an Old Poet,” a kd of melodic and thematic sequel to “Me & My Dog” om the EP, Bridgers sgs about what seems to be a former male mentor whom she has sce surpassed both talent and kdns. “You make me feel like an equal,” she sgs, then adds whergly, “but I’m better than you and you should know that by now.” The climactic lyrics is “I want to be happy”—a word that, per the document, was Dac’s suggtn—and the other two members jo Bridgers to sg as she mak this humble requt. Looked at another way, the tle of “the rerd” is not jt a cheeky acknowledgment of overblown expectatns but a preëmptive nostalgia for the honeymoon phase of boygeni’s creative llaboratn. The band members, who recently announced an ternatnal tour, told one terviewer that they’ve started gog to group therapy to prepare themselv for “the rerd” ’s release. Yet aga, the admissn suggts a prec self-awarens (wouldn’t Fleetwood Mac have benefted om a b of group therapy?), but ’s also an acknowledgment that, whether mil or emotnal, fatuatn is always an uncerta state. Arnt young iendships—and young love—n ol. Passn n curdle to nfn. Boygeni might last another year or twenty; they might reëngage over s, or “the rerd” might be their last jot enavor. That their future is unwrten, at least beyond the next year or so of “the tour,” is part of what mak the band feel so thrillg and, for the moment at least, so urgent. ♦</p></div></div></div><div
