Raised Londonrry, New Hampshire, wh her tw sister, younger sister and parents, Kev and Joan Hunt, Gay had a happy childhood. Her father, a retired NFL player, enuraged Gay to pursue athletics at a young age. “I remember playg soccer and softball; my father stilled the value and benef of beg on a team, ” Gay explaed.

“I knew I wanted to be close to home and part of somethg bigger than me, ” Gay said. In 1995, Gay’s hman year, the women’s basketball team, unr ach Geno Auriemma, won s first natnal champnship. And while Gay celebrated wh her teammat and basked their groundbreakg acplishment, ternally she was stgglg to e to terms wh her role on the team.
“In high school, I was a 25-pots-per-game player, but stg center stage at UConn, I was on the send team, ” Gay relled. Ridg the bench tted Gay’s emotnal strength and belief her abili. It was a physilly and mentally taxg procs, but over time Gay was able to fd her feet and thrive the supportg role that her ach and team need her to play.
