Chae Stephen don't simply imate Marv Gaye “Pri & Joy: The Marv Gaye Mil. ”“Pri & Joy, ” which opens Wednday and ns through June 2 at the Fisher Theatre, foc on the sger's relatnship wh his first wife, Anna Gordy Gaye (Krystal Drake).
The sister of Motown founr Berry Gordy was 17 years olr than Gaye. Mil lumari like Smokey Robson, the Marvelett, Jackie Wilson and Bo Diddley (whom Gaye performed wh early on) are part of the story gathers at Detro riveront to lnch Aretha Frankl AmphheatreMore:Lizzo brgs a big voice and tidgs of self-love Detro homeg showThe role of Gaye is played by two actors.

Grammy Award nomated sger/actor and Detro native, Keh Washgton will portray Marv Gaye the productn, wrten by Angela Barrow-Dunlap, also a Detro native. * fisher theater marvin gaye *
” Me also vers Gaye's llaboratns wh Tammi Terrell, who died 1970 om bra ncer plitns at the age of 24. Stephen arriv the show after termissn to portray Gaye at a time when he was mixg soul wh social nscns via hs like “What's Gog On.
” No longer sportg slick tailored sus, this Gaye has a full beard and wears a leather trench at and red knted beanie. World travel ntued his adult life as he performed rporate bands for Norwegian Cise had been workg on his own Marv Gaye revue when he was approached last summer by the “Pri & Joy” producers, cludg the sger's son, Marv Gaye III. "Pri & Joy" als only mimally wh Gaye's personal problems, cludg his dg abe and serial fily.
The sger's ath at the hands of his father, Marv Gaye Sr., 1984 is “unrstood, ” Stephen says, but not referenced directly. ”The show also foc on Gaye's spirualy, and aga Stephen believ he fs the bill. “A person has to be spirual one way or another to play Marv Gaye, ” he says.
HAL FISCHER: THE GAY SEVENTI
”'Pri & Joy: The Marv Gaye Mil'Wednday to June 2Fisher Theatre3011 Grand Blvd., Detro55-$85. Marv Gaye’s life was as msy as his mic was magnificent.
And “Pri & Joy: The Marv Gaye Mil” — now at Detro’s Fisher Theatre after premierg the Motown legend’s native Washgton D. Jarran Me as Gaye cir 1960-70 and Chae Stephen om 1970 on are both spectacular, bolstered by 15 of Gaye’s Motown favor (pl 1982’s “Sexual Healg”) that each livers wh a nfint assurance that hews strikgly close to the origal rerdgs.
Their performanc are smooth and transportive, brgg Gaye, at least as a sger, back to life 35 years after he was fatally shot by his father, and the year he would have turned 80. Krystal Drake as Gaye’s first wife Anna (Motown founr Berry Gordy Jr. ’s sister) is limed and certaly eclipsed by the Gaye specter but holds her own beltg out Barrett Strong’s “Money (That’s What I Want)” and duetg wh Stephen on “My Mistake.
‘PRI & JOY: THE MARV GAYE MIL’ AT FISHER THEATRE
” Tony Grant is a powerhoe as Gaye wgman Motown executive Harvey Fuqua and others, cludg a Teddy Penrgrass, while Jt Reynolds and Kourtney Lenton nvcgly channel Smokey Robson and Tammi Terrell, rpectively. The cln of the Origals’ “Baby I’m For Real, ” wrten by the Gay, is a nice nod to eper Motown history. Conceived by Marv Gaye III, the ia of examg the plex relatnship between Gaye and Anna, a Motown executive who helped shape his reer, is amb and tricky.
Their story is, to the public at least, a sibar, albe an important one, the Gaye legend, wh soarg highs and ep, troublg lows. Seventeen Gaye’s senr, we’re troduced to her untg sh the Flame Show Bar but her sharp bs acumen and heady drive are largely unseen and only hted at asis durg the rt of the show.
“PRI & JOY THE MARV GAYE MIL” IS ENTERTAG AT DETRO’S FISHER THEATRE
Siarly, Gaye’s dark si — securi, dg abe, prsn, a volatile send marriage (to Janis Hunter) — is given short shrift, makg for awkward and unexplaed chapters the show. After the uple warmly rn for the 25th Annual Grammy Awards 1983, where Gaye won two R&B trophi for “Sexual Healg, ” Stephen’s Gaye abptly breaks off and leav, ostensibly to go and help his mother, leavg both Anna and the dience nfed. The cursory portrayals extend to a practilly non-existent Berry Gordy (Bryce Pchum), whose own relatnship wh Gaye is jt as ccial but is limed to a telephone exchange about the landmark “What’s Gog On” album.
The sectn on Terrell’s cle and ath go on a b too long whout a real sense of her relatnship wh Gaye, while his murr, an unavoidable downer at the end of the show, feels clumsy and tentative. Ultimately “Pri & Joy” off as a show that’s tryg to straddle a le between joyful jebox mil and sightful character study, and between beg about Gaye and his reer or about the relatnship of a mil power uple. ” Gaye is sadly not wh anymore, but the show lets spend some valuable time wh him, spir if not body.
