It’s e a long way sce the very first Pri Stia march set off outsi the Blue Moon Cafe 1995 and was met wh hecklers and homophobic abe wh nary a sponsor to be found. Damian Barr, whose memoir Maggie and Me is both a warm and heartbreakg acunt of growg up gay 1980s and 90s Motherwell, was at the march that day.

Two years later The Gay Liberatn Front anised the first UK Gay Pri Rally, aga London, which attracted 700 – they were abed and harassed by the police but were termed to add an element of fun to a hugely polil event by endg wh a Gay Day Hy Park. Fast forward another 20 years and Pri events had started beg anised Manchter, Brighton and Birmgham, and London the UK Pri March was tens of thoands strong and the Gay Day had grown to a massive ftival.

If any of had had any signifint events experience, or any sight to how the mercial gay scene operated, or any klg of the sheer amount of goodwill that need extracted om all manner of public agenci and private anisatns those days to put on a succsful Pri event, we’d have jt led out. And there was a lot of bucket shakg every Friday and Saturday night every gay and lbian bar and venue that would let (which wasn’t all of them). But most of the time was jt a hard, endls slog of negotiatns wh the uncil, ntracts wh terers and tent suppliers and PA system suppliers and stagg suppliers, pleas for sponsorship om gay venu (some of which were fabuloly kd and supportive and some of which were… not) and endls lls to agents and acts to try to secure performanc for nothg ont of a crowd of termate size.

Go back another 15 years and gay relatnship are a crimal offence, LGBT liv forced to secrecy and shame, and the ia of public exprsns of Pri Stland anathema.

As wh the prev year the march started om Blythswood Square but this year routed through Gee Square and the gay scene area at Glassford Street on s way to Glasgow Green. This turned out to be gay in Jimmy Somerville who was a big h wh the crowd of around 5000. After the new Sttish Parliament proposed the repeal of Sectn 28 a wave of homophobia washed over Stland the form of huge billboards and leaflets om the ‘Keep the Cse’ mpaign and their backers the Daily Rerd.

GAY PRI RALLY EDBURGH DRAWS HUNDREDS

We had a Pri Party Sleepers bar by the statn as was known to be gay-iendly those days and 350 people turned up for which exceed our expectatns. At first the Highland Council refed but quickly back-tracked when they realised would make them look homophobic. The 2003 event was aga held Duthie Park wh no Pri March but aga focg on muny performanc, speech, a beer garn om the lol gay bar, gazebos for muny stalls and addnal performanc.

Events were then held around the ‘Pk Triangle’, wh a sports day Gayfield Square and a Health and Communy Fair Club eGo on Pirdy Place.

Equaly Network is a natnal lbian, gay, bisexual, transgenr and tersex (LGBTI) equaly and human rights chary. "We march pri and anger at all those untri around the world where is still illegal to be gay and we mt redouble our efforts every sgle day to change that.

The gay area Edburgh: The Pk Triangle. You’ll fd gay bars, pubs, and clubs mostly ncentrated on Broughton Street and towards the top of Leh Walk.

Edburgh’s bt gay bars and clubs have relaxed atmospher, welg staff, and iendly patrons.

Open om 1:00 pm to 1:00 am, Habana Edburgh is the perfect venue to beg your night out around Edburgh’s gay scene. CC Blooms, named after the lead of the 1988 film Beach (played by Bette Midler), is one of the biggt gay clubs Edburgh.

BT GAY PRI PARAS

This sy bar is one of Edburgh’s longt-nng gay bars, known for s iendly atmosphere and reasonably priced drks (and also sponsors the Hot Sts, Stland’s first-ever LGBTQ football team). Paradise Palms isn’t exactly a gay bar, but attracts a lot of LGBTQ patrons wh s funky r, creative dg optns, and drag baret. Victoria Bar is on Leh Walk, a 15-mute walk om the ma gay neighbourhood Edburgh.

This is another tablishment that isn’t specifilly a gay venue but is very gay-iendly and popular wh LGBTQ lols. It hosts a gay, dis-themed party (lled Hey QT) once a month. It has s roots march, celebratns, and monstratns of the late 1980s and 1990s, cludg the Lark the Park events that began as a prott agast Sectn 28, a seri of laws across Bra that prohibed promotns of homosexualy.
