Gays have been associated wh the rative and the performg arts—fashn, terr sign, hair and makp, dance, opera, and mil theater—almost as long as the inty label has existed.

Instead, I want to add somethg to the list, an art form that has been largely overlooked when nsirg the specific fluence of gay men our culture: I want to talk about gays and the culary arts. To be clear, I am not the least terted fg such a thg as gay food—not that many people haven’t tried, ually ls than sympathetic terms.

But as a gay man who has been okg profsnally for more than 20 years, I have observed myself and others what I ll a gay approach to okg, an approach that is rooted our gay inty. I hadn’t given this much of a thought until fairly recently, when I realized that, even though a large part of Ameri’s food world is, fact, gay, and the popular obssn wh food preparatn ntu to expand all kds of notns about the food world, gay okg has remaed firmly the closet.
