I <a href=">wrote a review</a> this week’s issue of the magaze. I also had an opportuny to speak to Lydon at length. This is ntual. The fact that there was a two- terval was not of my makg. I was bound and tied by a rerd pany. There was not always the eedom to move.</p><p class="paywall"><em>Why would they do that?</em></p><p class="paywall">You’ll have to ask every rerd label why they are all fallg apart. I’m not the only artist that’s beg put through a l. It’s a fairly mon thg. Everyone I’ve talked to have all had really ser plats. I wish there was a Better Bs Bure. But you n’t get out of the reupment clse. They won’t loan you any new money bee of old bt, but they won’t release the new rerds any real numbers. It’s Catch-22. Idcy. This is what happens when somethg as artistic as a mic label falls to the hands of bs people. But here I am gettg on wh thgs, fally, and ’s a bloody relief. We have our own label, our own Web se.</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-1 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall"><em>Was this album wrten over a long perd of time, or did e together quickly?</em></p><p class="paywall">It me together about six weeks, after que a long tourg ssn of almost two years. We were all gaggg at the b to get our teeth to new stuff. We didn’t have the time to work out. When you know each other well enough and you work as tightly this bond of iendship, mic happens.</p><p class="paywall"><em>Are you happy to be back? PiL has always seemed like not jt a band, but a personal outlet.</em></p><p class="paywall">I’ve missed like mad. For me, the blsgs are that there’s an dience that has also had to learn patience.</p><p class="paywall"><em>Have you been wrg all along?</em></p><p class="paywall">I’m a nstant state of wrg. I’m wrg right now as I talk to you. I have pag and pag.</p><p class="paywall"><em>Do you keep old lyrics?</em></p><p class="paywall">No. When I’m done, when a rerd has been ma and is a fal piece, I throw out all the not and the jottgs. I don’t have time for that kd of precns. It’s remarkably unhealthy. You know, I’ve been to some superstars’ ho, and I’ve been really disgted when I see their platum discs hangg the toilet. They’re jt there on the walls glarg at you when you’re tryg to be occupied wh other thgs. I don’t need my old lyrics. I’m never gog to n out of ias.</p><div class="Contaer-bkChBi byNLHx"></div><p class="paywall"><em>How did you feel when Axl Rose refed ductn to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? It was siar to what you did, when you wrote an open letter qutng the whole enterprise.</em></p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-2 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall">Good on him. I don’t know what his reasons were, but for any reason at all that’s good enough. It’s an act of real foolishns to walk to that nonsense. If you do, you know, you’ve been -opted to the shstem. Also, once they get that award, at that moldy mm, people seem to vanish.</p><p class="paywall"><em>Given the ristance to nostalgia, do you have a problem wh playg old songs?</em></p><p class="paywall">Not at all. Those are pleted piec of work. Those are thgs I’m very proud of and fished. It’s the bs and piec that get me. But even wh the pleted work, we have a four-hundred-song talog. There’s plenty to go through.</p><p class="paywall"><em>Have you had to set asi any songs? I jt mean for athletic reasons. Can you still h the high not “Four Enclosed Walls”?</em></p><p class="paywall">I love sgg that song, and I sg better than ever. The not are higher than ever. They’re well up there. My whole life I’ve been lookg search of that perfect high note. I thk when I reach my lungs will explo. As a sger I’m tryg to reach that ultimate thg.</p><p class="paywall"><em>You’ve said that wrg a pop song is hard, and admirable, that ’s easier to make a kd of fake jazz or blu rerd. Do you listen to pop mic when you’re not makg mic?</em></p><p class="paywall">I love all kds of mic, but there’s somethg special about good pop mic: ’s direct and there’s an nocence. It always has great noble ambns but done wh the utmost simplicy.</p><p class="paywall"><em>Can you remember the earlit rerds that stck you that way?</em></p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-3 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall">There are lns. What n I thk of off the top of my head? There was a sger named Johnny Leyton wh a song, “Johnny, Remember Me.” Or “Virgia Pla.” If Roxy Mic never wrote a good song the rt of their reers, they still have that, and ’s great. T. Rex was fuckg fantastic at makg a pop song.</p><p class="paywall"><em>This rerd sounds very optimistic some ways. Is that an accurate reflectn of the ssns?</em></p><p class="paywall">It was all a wonrful, wonrful time of work. I’ve been very many suatns where I’ve not liked the other members of the band or they have not liked me. I grew up prumg that’s the way mic was ma. It don’t need to be that way.
