twenty-seven years, Sarah, and moved to an apartment Washgton, D.C. The personal crisis that ensued overlapped wh a spirual one. He was wrg a book lled “<a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">The Road to Character,</a>” offerg guidance, through bgraphil se studi, for how a person might engage moral self-improvement, and two of the chapters ma exampl of Christian liv: St. Augte’s and Dorothy Day’s. His rrponnce wh a young rearch assistant, a Christian woman named Anne Snyr, grew tense. Brooks was a practicg Jew, if one on the downslope of belief—his wife had nverted and then bee more Orthodox than he—and Snyr, elegant memos and rrponnce, worked to persua him that his acunt of Day’s sense of Christian grace missed the sublime re. “The foundatnal fact,” Snyr remd Brooks, “is you nnot earn your way to a state of grace—this ni grace’s power, and subverts s very fn.” For Brooks, this rried the clary of revelatn, and soon he let be known, among his acquatanc, that he was experiencg relig cursy. An rmal petn opened for David Brooks’s soul. He received, by his own timatn, three hundred gifts of spirual books, “only one hundred of which were different pi of C. S. Lewis’s ‘<a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Mere Christiany</a>.’ ”</p><p class="paywall">One morng, passg through Penn Statn at sh hour, Brooks was overe by the feelg that he was movg a sea of souls—not the hair and legs and sneakers but the moral part. “It was like sudnly everythg was illumated, and I beme aware of an fe pth on each of the thoands of people. They were livg souls,” Brooks wr his new book, “<a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">The Send Mounta</a>.” “Sudnly seemed like the most vivid part of realy was this: Souls wakg up the morng. Souls ridg the tra to work. Souls yearng for goodns. Souls wound by earlier trmas. Wh that me a feelg that I was nnected by rad wav to all of them—some unrlyg soul of which we were all a piece.” Brooks’s spirual momentum was quickeng. While attendg the Aspen Ias Ftival, he hiked to the edge of Amerin Lake, pulled out a book of Puran prayers, and had a transcennt experience buttrsed by the appearance of a “ltle brown creature who looked like a badger.” He eventually realized that he was love wh Snyr and nfsed his love to her. (Eventually, they married; this, prumably, is what Alexanr Portnoy’s parents so feared.) In the last third of the book, Brooks scrib an tertg and irregular progrs toward New Ttament ials, and, by the end, he sounds like a Christian, even if he isn’t que ready to scribe himself as one.</p><p class="paywall">For Brooks, this is a turn both subtle and obv ways: his pot of view om early his reer was that of an affectnate theorist of social behavr, and that posn pend upon the studied supprsn of himself as a character. Although he me of age wrg for <em>The Weekly Standard</em>, and has long held the amiable nservative’s chairs on “PBS NewsHour” and the <em>Tim</em> opn page, Brooks has never been an pecially opnated voice; his bt work, the tails he notic seem to add up to a crique. “After four and a half years abroad, I returned to the Uned Stat wh h ey and was nonted by a seri of peculiar juxtaposns,” he began his signature work, “<a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Bobos Paradise</a>,” published 2000. The Clton era was s eveng, the merocrats had the world by s lapels, and Brooks was a reful stunt of the manners of the end of history. “WASPy upsle suburbs were sudnly dotted wh arty ffeeho where people drank ltle European ffe and listened to alternative mic. Meanwhile, the bohemian downtown neighborhoods were packed wh multiln-dollar lofts and those upsle garng stor where you n buy a fx-thentic trowel for $35.99. Sudnly massive rporatns like Microsoft and the Gap were on the scene cg Gandhi and Jack Kerouac their advertisements. And the stat l seemed to be turned upsi down. Hip lawyers were wearg those teeny ty steel-amed glass.”</p><div><div class="ConsumerMarketgUnThemedWrapper-iUTMTf jssHut nsumer-marketg-un nsumer-marketg-un--article-mid-ntent" role="prentatn" aria-hidn="te"><div class="nsumer-marketg-un__slot nsumer-marketg-un__slot--article-mid-ntent nsumer-marketg-un__slot---ntent"></div><div class="journey-un"></div></div></div><p class="paywall">Pretty good! Brooks’s style go down easy as always, and, though he might have overstated the signifince of the Sharper Image talogue, his ma sight—that bourgeois and bohemian culture had llapsed to each other; that the powerful wanted to be ol and the ol wanted to be powerful—was ad on, not jt as a document of a moment but as a lastg tenncy Amerin life. You n trace what Brooks scribed as the Bobo ethos through early to mid-Silin Valley era and the rise of Barack Obama. It pretty close to predictg the ascent Amerin culture of urban styl and valu and the <a href=">universalized taste of Airbnb</a>. Maybe we haven’t changed so much the past twenty years after all.</p><p class="paywall">This perspective was, mercifully, gentle to the red and purple stat, too. In the Bh years, Brooks sought to expla the nservative mood buildg Ameri’s outer suburbs by troducg the agreeable pose character of Pat Man, who wanted a society om the mid-twentieth century and grillg technologi om the twenty-send. “I don’t know if you’ve ever noticed the exprsn of a man who is about to buy a first-class barbecue grill,” Brooks <a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">wrote</a>. “He walks to a Home Depot or Lowe’s and his ey are glisteng wh a faraway zeal, like one of those old prophets gazg to the promised land.” The tails mount: the “cs-tarragon trout filets” that awa on his ck, the male iends, drsed Tommy Bahama shirts, who are “no more than 25 pounds overweight.” Brooks imag Pat Man’s unease around immigrants, which helped to nudge him out to the far suburbs, but also the hn of the muny he built there, one based on an ialized small town, an “old fashned place out of morn materials,” whose polil ials are “rponsibily, rpectabily, and orr.” Brooks’s characterizatns are broad, but his keel is even.</p><p class="paywall">Brooks, who greeted the dawn of the Obama era wh affectg admiratn and enthiasm, always wrote om Washgton and some way about the polil divi, but he mostly worked hard to see the monali. The them had enough stayg power to bee a slightly stale shtick: the summer of 2017, Brooks <a href=">wrote</a> of takg a iend wh a high-school tn to a gourmet sandwich shop, where the list of offergs (pillo, sopprsata) ma the iend’s “face eeze up” wh anxiety. Clichés like this dited the lims of Brooks’s work as a social cric: you n miss a lot if you maly study the manners of él. Pat Man may have been nservative plac for benign reasons— church on Sundays for the sense of spirual orr, and watchg Fox News for the valorizatn of the Navy <em class="small">SEAL</em>s—but the polics he enuntered those plac were not benign. Foc on the ntours of the lid and you risk missg the boilg pot over which has been lowered.</p><p class="has-dropp has-dropp__lead-standard-headg paywall">“The Send Mounta” is Brooks’s first book to be wrten the Tmp era—and although polics are not s subject, they supply some of s psychologil atmosphere. As a nservative who had been publicly horrified by Tmp’s ascennce, Brooks found himself isolated after the Print had triumphed, a historil trma that me not long after the personal one of his divorce. “My nservatism was no longer the prevailg nservatism, so I found myself tellectually and polilly unattached, too,” he wr. “Few people nfid me.” The experience separat Brooks om his old alli. If, early the Tmp era, other nservativ were disverg the forts of vice, he would explore the possibili of virtue.</p><div class="Contaer-bkChBi byNLHx"></div><p class="paywall">The book tak s tle om a hristic that Brooks veloped to differentiate the people he wanted to be like om those he didn’t. “It’s gotten so I n regnize first- and send-mounta people,” he wr nfintly. Those on their first mounta of life tend to foc on themselv: on tablishg an inty, on managg their reputatn, on stat and reward. The send mounta is normally reached only after a perd of sufferg (“the valley”), and those who make there e to foc on others. “The send mounta is about sheddg the ego and losg the self,” about ntributn rather than acquisn, egalarianism rather than élism, Brooks wr. The satisfactn of send-mounta people is eper ( is a “bigger mounta”) and leads not to happs but to joy. The more Brooks works to scribe the joy of send-mounta people, the more ankly sexual sounds. “It’s when the sk barrier between you and some other person or enty fas away and you feel fed together,” Brooks wr. In his troductn, Brooks quot a Christian amic named Beln Lane, who wrote a spirual memoir, “<a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Backpackg wh the Sats</a>,” “Whenever I plunge to the wilrns, my body and the environment move and out of each other an timate pattern of exchange.” In the marg, I wrote, “Brooks, is this book about humpg?”</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-1 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall">Nothg so specific, turns out. Brooks has chosen a dntgly broad topic—more or ls, what might mean to live a nsc and virtuo life. As a mted generalist, his sourc of thory are wi-rangg: Dietrich Bonhoeffer, the German theologian, is med for sight on the same page as the prospery pastor T. D. Jak, and on the followg page Gee Elt, and on the page after that “the management experts Chip and Dan Heath.” Brooks punctuat a chapter on fdg your votn wh a long quotatn by H. A. Dorfman, “one of the great baseball psychologists.” To manage this material, Brooks, as is his tenncy, tegoriz relentlsly. The kids “e om the streets and ll Kathy and David ‘Mom’ and ‘Dad,’ their chosen parents,” Brooks wr. “A young man announc he’s bisexual, and another adms he is prsed.” The dners at Kathy and David’s hoe, Brooks wr, “are what the send mounta looks like,” and yet the bisexual man and the prsed one are not named or scribed. I wonred, what mounta are they on? Are they self-centered, too, and do they need to shed their “ego ial,” or have they progrsed to their send mounta, or is this story jt about David and Kathy? They read like they have been styled to place but not actually seen. “After the meal,” Brooks wr, lavishly, “we head over to the piano, and somebody will play an Ale song and people will sg.” Maybe not everyone for the same reasons.</p><p class="paywall">For a book about transformatn, most of the people whom Brooks scrib are static figur, exemplars of the first mounta or the send. The only soul motn belongs to Brooks. He scrib a childhood which a secular Jewish home life tersected wh an Epispal school and summer mp (“I grew up eher the most Christiany Jew on the earth or the most Jewy Christian, a plight ma survivable by the fact that I was certa God did not exist”), and, although he acknowledg that relig nvictn seiz some nverts sudnly and powerfully, his own experienc “have all been more prosaic and ls nvcg.” He relat the moment Penn Statn when he sudnly saw all the muters as souls, and the one Aspen, when he felt a sensatn “like the sound of a really nice r door gently closg.” It’s “fair to ask, Did I nvert?” Brooks wr. Not exactly. His relig awakeng ma him “feel more Jewish than ever before,” the cultural feelg now unrgird by a spirual one. But, “On the other hand, I n’t unread Matthew.” Here the secret and tertg book, the memoir of nversn, slis to the advertised, pedantic one, about the importance of virtue. Brooks wr, “J is the person who shows what givg yourself away looks like.”</p><p class="paywall">Wh a zealo quickeng, Brooks begs to sermonize, not about his own soul but the untry’s. The “dividualistic moral elogy is cmblg around ,” he wr. “It has left people naked and alone.” He wants to replace wh a new one built on relatnships (“the central journey of morn life is movg self to service”) and wr that he is llg to “a better way to live.” The wry, observatnal tone that has been Brooks’s hallmark for s is entirely gone. He clos the book wh fifty-seven numbered paragraphs that prise, he wr, a “relatnalist manifto” that explas how we might live not wh ourselv md but others. Brooks choos this form, he wr, bee ptur “all the bluntns, fervor and nvictn that has driven me, wh creasg tensy, to wre this book.” We have nceived of ourselv mostly as tonomo, he wr, and so “we’ve torn our society to shreds.” One of the fifty-seven ems Brooks’s manifto pecially ught my eye. “Most of ,” he wr, “get better at livg as we go.”</p><p class="paywall">Really, do we? That experience matters is a universal vany—that we get better at livg as we go, that the send mounta (the send marriage) is richer and more rewardg than the first. Olr people have a bad reputatn right now—their vot elected Tmp, and their choic assured an environmental future that looks creasgly based. Wisdom—about the climate, about guns—belongs to the young. Brooks wants to shift the dials back to a more faiar settg. The ba is that the book is about ; the swch is that is about him. “This is ultimately a book about renewal,” Brooks wr, but the story he tells is so centrally about one experience of renewal that offers ltle guidance to the rt of .
