A mpaign to repeal that law was quickly mobilized, led by pop sger and Christian fundamentalist Ana we predictably were unable to feat the referendum (I was the mpaign manager for the gay si), the huge impact of the Da County battle was to put gay rights squarely on the natn's polil and social agenda, th acplishg the number one goal of our movement, and all social movements: gag visibily for our muny and our Gay Pri march was lnched 1970 and ntu to this day on the last Sunday of June to memorate the anniversary of the Stonewall rts, but unlike other major paras which marched down Fifth Avenue, the gay rights celebrants were relegated to marchg up Sixth Avenue. The key reason was that the Archdce of New York did not want gay activists marchg past St Patrick's Cathedral, the most important Catholic church New York and the rince of the Manford – a fiery lear of the Gay Activists Alliance – and I enlisted our ngrsman, Ed Koch, to lobby Mayor Beame to thorize the Gay Pri march to e the Fifth Avenue route. Beame – at the urgg of his sophistited and forceful first puty mayor, John Zuctti (the namake of Zuctti Park lower Manhattan), granted the requted route change, a signifint early regnn of the LGBT muny's stat as a legimate nstuency servg equal thg I routely tell younger LGBT activists who pla that we haven't attaed full equaly, is to regnize the lightng speed wh which the gay rights movement has achieved tremendo succs.
