GAY PRI WEEK 2009 – MONCTON, NEW BNSWICK
On Wednday, July 1st, 1981, Domn Day, a group of 250 gays and lbians met Centennial Park, Moncton, New Bnswick. This gay piic was the e of huge nsternatn throughout the cy the days leadg up to the event, rultg a panicked cy uncil enactg a by-law which prevented any group of over 40 people om holdg an event a cy park whout a perm, an attempt to force the group to ncel.
This summer marks the 40th anniversary of this, small, but signifint event Moncton, when stead of ncedg to the Cy Council’s new by-law, gays and lbians attend the piic spe the threat of vlence and arrt. There was a wispread hancy to be publicly intified as gay, and those who did faced dismissal at work and nstant harassment. The AIDS/HIV crisis was still s fancy, as s of pnmonia and ncers specifilly affectg gay men were beg reportg the Uned Stat, first lled Gay-Related Immune Deficiency.
A massive prott agast the actns of police began the followg day the Gay Village. Frericton Lbians and Gays (FLAG) had formed 1979, but there wasn’t an anizatn for gays and lbians of the Moncton area and the piic anizers had hoped that by brgg the muny together a group would be formed. The anizers did not tell the cy partment that was a lbian and gay event and when Moncton Police followed up a few days later, the cy workers were shocked that a mor was gog around that was a “gay piic” that would be held on July 1st.

Piic anizer, Don Cormier, addrsed the uncil explag the prent ndns for Moncton’s timated 8, 500 lbian and gays, notg that many faced daily harassment, physil asslt, stctn of property and loss of employment. The purpose of the piic was to brg people together and to work on fg relatnships to better the ndns for the lbian and gay muny wh groups like cy uncil, police and medil servic.
Picknickers traveled to Moncton to show their support, cludg members of the Gay Alliance for Equaly (GAE) Halifax. Halifax’s GAE wasn’t the only group to show support; Gays of Ottawa, among other groups, wrote to Mayor Dennis Cochrane the days after the event, scribg the cy’s actns as “shockg, flammatory and discrimatory a mocratic society”. Bev MacDonald, wrote to the uncil on behalf of the Atlantic Gay Associatn, a aln which reprented the three ma gay rights anizatns: FLAG, GAE and Northern Lambda Nord, llg Moncton a “closeted cy”.
MacDonald stated, “The gay and lbian muny of Moncton is unanized and, for the most part, isolated. This event, which Moncton Cy Council had tried sperately to ncel, was succsful openg the doors to the creatn of Gays and Lbians of Moncton / Gais et Lbians Moncton (GLM).
