By the early '70s, Diana Ross and Marv Gaye were pletely different creative terrori. Ross was settlg down as a profsnal diva, while Gaye was phg his art forward wh What's Gog On, Trouble Man, and Let's Get It On. For Marv Gaye, was the year of his R&B chart-toppg Let’s Get It On LP, the slipstream of his own movie sre adventure, Trouble Man.
The duets project, released on October 26 that year, arrived jt two months after Let’s Get It On and, although his first wh Diana, was Gaye’s sixth llaborative rerd.

Diana & Marv had been mooted as early as 1970, when Ross was newly solo and Gaye was nursg the emotnal wounds of Terrell’s tragic ath. Origally released by soul duo Caston & Majors, the Ross-Gaye versn of that tune was on Motown’s multi-artist 1979 album Pops, We Love You, dited to Berry “Pops” Gordy, Sr. MicDiana Ross had one pet peeve wh Marv Gaye when they rerd together.
Motown birthed a wealth of mic legends cludg Marv Gaye, the Suprem, and the Jackson 5. Ross and Gaye enjoyed immense populary the early ’70s and before long, Motown boss Berry Gordy put them together for a special mil project.

Marv Gaye and Diana Ross rerd a duets album. The label stck gold twice wh “A’t No Mounta High Enough” when Gaye and Tammi Terrell released 1967 and then aga wh Diana Ross’ ver of the song 1970. Followg the succs of Gaye’s What’s Gog On album and Ross’ sgle, Gordy thought ’d be an opportune time for the pair to rerd a duets project.

Per Taraborrelli, Gaye spoke about givg Ross a hard time years later. When he appeared on Soul Tra the late ‘70s, a fan asked Gaye about Diana & Marv and whether he’d ever do another album wh Ross. Sadly, Gaye passed away before he ever got the chance.
