His dad worked as a salman for Sunbeam, and every time he got a promotn, the fay moved, workg their way through Rho Island, Philalphia, Chigo, and Boston until they fally settled Eda, Mnota, a suburb outsi Mneapolis, when Burke was 12. He put Harvard on hold, but after a year mor league hockey, he took a hard look at the pth of the Flyers bench and asked his general manager for advice: "He told me, 'If you were my son, I'd tell you to go to law school.'" Burke graduated om Harvard Law 1981 and went to work as an attorney reprentg NHL players. A later, he was G.M. of the Hartford Whalers. In his terview for the job, he told the owner, "If you hire Brian Burke to n your team, there will only be two hands on the steerg wheel, and they'll both be me." Like his dad, he was passnate about hockey and had spent hours at NHL arenas wh Burke, studyg the game, meetg other general managers and the league's top players. His fay was surprised when he qu but accepted his explanatn that he wasn't keen on ridg the bench his senr year. What they didn't know was that Brendan was sick of listeng to the locker-room slurs about faggots and homos and the dread cksucker. I jt latched on and didn't let him go."</p><p>Stt me out to Brendan the middle of their hman year. Brendan was the first person he'd ever told, even though people had been tntg him about beg gay sce he was a ltle boy. "Wh Brendan you uld talk about anythg," Stt says. "You uld talk about guys. If a boy gave you a weird look and you thought he was terted, you uld immediately text Brendan." When Brendan saw Stt stgglg wh g out to his fay, he walked him over to stunt health servic to set up some unselg appotments.</p><p>It was Brendan's turn to e out to Stt their sophomore year. "I knew somethg was up when Brendan me to the study room and sat across om me, actg sktery. He do this fumbly thg wh his hands and says 'ah' a lot this weird, drawn-out Canadian-Boston accent when he's feelg awkward. Then he said, 'I know we've talked a lot about you beg gay, and I want you to know you're not alone.' I said, 'I know.' And he said, 'No, I mean you're not alone. All those years shadowg his dad at NHL arenas paid off. He was a standout the job, workg closely wh the ach, reviewg game film, analyzg players, and handlg recg rrponnce. By Christmas, he'd also found the urage to e out to his fay. He flew home to Boston and told his mother, his sisters Katie and Molly, and his brother, Patrick.</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-3 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p>Patrick is five years olr than Brendan, a Notre Dame graduate, part-time law stunt, and sut for the Philalphia Flyers. He was g off a road trip to Rho Island when Brendan told him he was gay: "I had a bunch of bags the r, and I went si to tell Brendan he had to help get the luggage out. We're walkg to the r and he said, 'I have somethg to tell you: I'm gay.' I said, 'Are you beg ser? Are we havg this nversatn, or are you jt jokg around?' He said, 'No, I'm ser.' I said, 'Well, that don't change anythg, and I love you—now grab those bags and let's go si.' The whole nversatn was about thirty sends long, and when I opened the door I yelled, 'Mom, you owe me twenty bucks—I told you he was gay!'"</p><p>A uple of days later, Brendan flew out to Vanuver to tell his dad and his stepmom. "I had no klg," Burke says. "So I said, 'Are you sure?' bee I know for some people there's an ambivalence about , and he said, 'Yeah,' and I said, 'Well, that's fe wh me.' But later, I did say to Jennifer that I was worried. All I want for my kids is for them to be happy. I still thk that beg gay our society, there's a great burn to , and that's not right. As I went to bed, I thought, 'I hope he has a happy life. I hope 's not marked wh persecutn and bias and bigotry. I hope this burn isn't too much for him.' Especially if he was gog to work hockey."</p><p>···</p><p>Two years after g out to his fay, Brendan Burke cid to e out to the world. He unrstood this would be a big al. Patrick agreed and told Brendan he should brace himself. As a sut, Patrick had racked up a lot of hours locker rooms listeng to the kd of talk that drove his ltle brother out of the sport high school: "The are farm boys om Wtern Canada who haven't been exposed to much. It's not like N.Y.C., where everyone has fifteen gay iends. If you told an NHL player, 'You're gog to have a gay teammate,' the first thg that would pop to his md is Richard Simmons skippg to the locker room a leotard and then he ss on your lap. Brian Burke and TSN host Jam Duthie were Toronto, and Brendan was a stud Boston. "There are a lot of gay athlet out there and gay people workg pro sports that serve to know that there are safe environments where people are supportive of you regardls of your sexual orientatn."</p><p>Duthie turned and asked Brian what he thought of Brendan's cisn and got a vtage, unscripted Burke answer. "I'm very proud of Brendan," he said. "If I had to pick, I would have picked him to go send. Let someone else go first. It's not the msage that he has, which is a wonrful one, but pneers are often misunrstood. You don't wish this on your son. You wish that someone else rri that burn first, but this is what he wanted to do, and we support him.... It tak a lot of jam to take this step. He's obvly a fearls kid. Brendan let everyone know that there was one word he spised even more than <em>cksucker</em>, and that was <em>faggot</em>. But his rapport wh the players ma the transn easy. "He was good about ," Blasi says. "He had a great sense of humor, and if somethg was qutnable, he'd be the first to lgh about or crack a joke."</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-4 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p>Around the league, Patrick found most people were pole, at least public: "I'm sure there were people who were surprised or had somethg cel to say behd closed doors, but at the end of the day, everyone I heard om, wh varyg gre of awkwardns about , was supportive." Patrick knows havg the last name Burke didn't hurt; a lot of people the league had known Brendan sce he was a ltle boy. But what would be like for a ge player, the guy who wasn't a superstar or related to a powerful NHL ecutive? "You hear tons of mors about different guys," Patrick says. "Most statistics say one ten people are gay. Factor how hard is to be a profsnal athlete and the fact that we [the NHL] haven't been the most welg group—even if 's one thirty, you're probably talkg about thirty players at least."</p><p>Dpe the rock-'em-sock-'em, no-cksuckers-allowed culture of the hockey world, Patrick is optimistic about the future: "I know there are people who would disagree wh me, but I thk the next five years we're gog to have a gay player e out. Everythg that has happened wh Brendan has really started a discsn. People hockey are talkg about . It felt impossible to say no, but si Burke was flounrg. "It's a fort level," he says. "Before all of this, was jt a circle that I didn't move . I didn't have any gay iends. I still don't, technilly.
