tim herself. She was gog to get their photographs removed om private Facebook groups like Jt the Tip of the Spear. (The name refers both to a ploy to ax a woman to havg sex and to a ary tactic.) Woytek didn’t nsir herself a femist, but she was sick of ary sexism. The Mare Corps is the only branch of the armed servic that still segregat basic trag by genr; 2014, nearly eight per cent of female mar reported havg been sexually asslted wh the prev year. On Jt the Tip of the Spear’s Facebook page, unrneath the screenshot of a uniformed mare named Erika Butner, there were typil ments. “Would smash,” one male mare wrote. Another asked, “Who has her nus?” Woytek msaged Butner and offered to help. She ntacted the group’s secretive admistrators, who, by then, had bee ed to her take-down requts. They agreed to pull Butner’s photo.</p><p class="paywall">Woytek and Butner beme iends. In the fall of 2016, they learned about a new Facebook group, lled Mar Uned. In this one, men weren’t only repostg pictur of female lleagu but also plunrg them—hackg social-media acunts, tradg nu imag om past and prent relatnships. The group had nearly thirty thoand members; many of the women the photographs were intified by name, rank, and postg. Unr a photo of a female drill sergeant, an active-duty mare wrote, “10/10 would rape.” In January of this year, Woytek lled a Mare Corps tip le to report the group, and Butner e-mailed the Naval Crimal Invtigative Service. Neher heard back. The group ntued to grow.</p><p class="paywall">On March 4th, a veteran of the Mar named Thomas Brennan broke the story on Reveal, the Web se of the Center for Invtigative Reportg. Nearly every natnal news anizatn picked up; Woytek spoke to the Washgton <em>Post</em> the next day. “Even if I uld, I’m never reenlistg,” she told the paper. Her e-mail and social-media acunts were flood wh threats. Her father, a p San Bernardo, e-mailed the attorney Gloria Allred. “His favore sayg is ‘Don’t start the fight, fish ,’ ” Woytek told me recently. “He’s a big Gloria fangirl.” Allred lled her the next day. Two days after that, Woytek and Butner flew to Los Angel, and held a prs nference Allred’s office. It was Internatnal Women’s Day, and Allred was drsed red for the ocsn.</p><p class="paywall">This was the first step what Allred lls “creative lawyerg.” There was no ligatn on the table. Instead, she was aimg to fluence the urt of public opn by gettg the victim’s perspective the news. Lately, not a day go by whout Allred’s name beg mentned the news somewhere, as my Google alerts n attt. (Allred also receiv the alerts; the past few months, she has ocsnally forward them to me, wh the note “Please see below.”) The approach attracts cricism om people who say that Allred is more terted the spotlight than jtice. It also works.</p><p class="paywall">Ls than a week after the prs nference wh Woytek and Butner, there was a Senate Armed Servic Commtee hearg, which Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, of New York, exriated the Mar for their apparent actn. (Mar Uned was still up and nng; the ary had known about siar groups sce at least 2013.) Allred then held another prs nference wh Woytek and Butner, and outled three goals: legislatn banng nonnsensual sharg of timate photographs, a meetg wh the Hoe Armed Servic Commtee, and a meetg wh the mandant of the U.S. Mare Corps. In April, Woytek ttified, uniform, before the Senate, and later that month she met wh the mandant. In May, the Protectg the Rights of Individuals Agast Technologil Exploatn (<em class="small">PRIVATE</em>) Act passed unanimoly the Hoe. The bill awas a Senate vote. It would make nonnsensual sharg of timate photographs a vlatn of the Uniform Co of Milary Jtice.</p><p class="has-dropp has-dropp__lead-standard-headg paywall">In June, I vised the law offic of Allred, Maroko & Goldberg, high up a grane-and-glass buildg on the rner of Crcent Heights and Wilshire, jt outsi Miracle Mile. I took a seat an airy room where Allred holds prs nferenc—a faiar dark-wood bookse, led wh bound volum, occupied one wall. Allred swept moments later, wearg a bright-pk bouclé su jacket. Woytek and Butner followed her, bs sual, wh tattoos pokg out om beneath their sleev. Butner’s forearm was ked wh a le om “Star Wars”: “<em class="small">DIE REBEL SCUM</em>.” It was Woytek’s first day as a civilian, and she was practilly vibratg wh expectant verve. Allred distributed salads and sandwich and asked if everyone had a muff. “I’m a mother,” she said. “I’m always aaid everyone’s gog to starve to ath. Two days later, a story broke about a new shared drive, which clud photos of an unnsc naked woman.) “Oh, we’re not done,” Allred said, almost mischievoly.</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-1 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall">While she got up to make a phone ll, I asked Woytek and Butner if their iends had been skeptil of the cisn to work wh Allred. They’d heard all the cricism, they told me—that she was an ambulance chaser, that she was more terted money and media attentn than her clients. “People thk she’s tellg what to say, or prsurg , and she’s never!” Woytek said. “She shov the prs out of the way for —like, ‘No, you n talk to <em>me!</em> ’ And I’m, like, ‘Thank you! Thank you!’ ”</p><p class="paywall">As Allred sat back down, I asked if they felt like different people, pre-Allred and post. Woytek nodd. “I’m empowered,” she said, wellg up. “I’m a femist.”</p><p class="paywall">Allred clasped her hands, electrified. “Yay!” she shouted. “And she wouldn’t have said eher thg before!”</p><div class="Contaer-bkChBi byNLHx"></div><p class="paywall">“I have tears my ey,” Woytek said, sheepishly.</p><p class="paywall">“Stop!” Butner wailed. She had also teared up.</p><p class="paywall">“Really, I’ve grown as a woman, not jt as a person,” Woytek said.</p><p class="paywall">“I’ve always been a femist,” Butner said. “But, if we didn’t have Gloria, I don’t know where this would’ve gone.”</p><p class="paywall">Allred sed, beatifilly, and said, “They have bee the women they were meant to be.”</p><p class="has-dropp has-dropp__lead-standard-headg paywall">Gloria Allred may be the most famo practicg attorney the Uned Stat. She has attaed that renown ls through ligatn—though she has done plenty of that—than through a blend of high-profile legal advocy and public relatns. The mentn of Allred to another trial lawyer often elics a discreet pse, then a slightly raised eyebrow, followed by somethg like “Gloria is really, really great at what she do.” What she do, as far as the public n see, is show up ont of TV meras, five feet two, her black turtleneck, wh her gold jewelry and her brightly lored jacket and her clients by her si, and liver her msage wh bulldog aplomb. Her voice has the texture of pavement—dark, rough, reassurg, nsistent. She has a dry sense of humor, which, the days, tends to emerge a bemed tone or a sly look, and a general willgns to play herself as a character. Once, when I asked her about her beach hoe Malibu, she said, “Did you ask me if I live there? Wh the Hollywood Hills behd her and the bright lights illumatg her osted and immovable hairdo, Allred ran through an abbreviated history of her work for the gay muny. In 1983, she sued the Los Angel rtrant Papa Choux, which had nied service to a lbian uple. In 1989, she reprented Pl Jasperson, a man wh <em class="small">AIDS</em> who’d been turned away om a nail salon Wt Hollywood. (She ntued wh the lawsu after Jasperson died.) In 2004, she reprented Rob Tyler and Diane Olson the first challenge to California’s prohibn of same-sex marriage. She won all three s, tablishg anti-discrimatn legal precents. She remas close to Tyler and Olson, who surprised her wh lunch at Nobu this summer on her seventy-sixth birthday.</p><p class="paywall">“I am honored to be part of this battle, and I will ntue to be for the rt of my life—and, if possible, om the great beyond as well,” she told <em>The Advote</em>, her owl-brown ey lockg on the mera. The segment nclud, and the producers epted astonished giggl. “You are so inic, Gloria!” one of them said. “All I n say is <em>wow</em>,” another told her.</p><p class="paywall">“It’s four-twenty-ne,” Allred said triumphantly, brandishg her phone and tchg my eye. She had a ll schled at four-thirty.</p><p class="paywall">Three hours later, jt about everyone at the firm—there are eleven other lawyers, along wh paralegals and assistants—had posed their ffee mugs the office kchen and gone home. Allred was still workg. The firm has three shifts of secretari to ver s workday. Allred has no hobbi and few dulgenc. She is stylish but don’t like shoppg. She don’t ok. (“If I ok, I uld be helpg someone else durg that time,” she told me.) She works on Saturdays and Sundays. She told me that she hasn’t taken a vatn sce the eighti. (When I asked her law partner Nathan Goldberg about this, he said, “I do remember a vatn, but was the seventi.”) She matas her stama whout ffee, her equilibrium whout alhol. She is the person you ll if you’re a p wh a dghter who’s been harassed by her ary lleagu, or if you’re a sixty-year-old woman who’s fally ready to acce Roman Polanski of moltg you when you were a teen-ager. There is no shortage of the Gloria Allred type of se.</p><p class="has-dropp has-dropp__lead-standard-headg paywall">Five days after I vised Allred Los Angel, I sat the back of a urtroom Norristown, Pennsylvania, a half-hour drive om Philalphia, and watched a bank of journalists whisper as Allred walked and took her seat. It was 8:30 <em class="small">A</em>.<em class="small">M</em>. on Monday, June 5th, and the crimal trial of Bill Cosby was about to beg. He stood acced of three unts of felony cent aggravated asslt agast Andrea Constand, who had been the director of women’s-basketball operatns at Temple Universy, Cosby’s alma mater, January, 2004, when the cint qutn took place. Each unt rried a maximum sentence of ten years prison.</p><p class="paywall">The Cosby se had bee a high-profile provg ground both for Allred’s media-centered strategy and for the story of righteo victimhood which she has put forward throughout her reer. Constand first reported the cint 2005. Cosby had ved her to his hoe, she said, then offered her pills, and asslted her after she was pacated. At the time, the Montgomery County district attorney nducted terviews and cid not to pursue the se, cg a lack of evince. But Constand was not the first woman to acce Cosby of rape, and, the years followg, many other women me forward. It took a rurgence of media attentn—rooted Cosby’s celebry stat, the salac nature of the accatns, and a new wave of mastream sympathy for sexual-asslt victims—to prompt the current district attorney to file charg, 2016, shortly before the statute of limatns was set to expire.</p><p class="paywall">In recent s, the cultural unrstandg of sexual asslt and the legal procr erng s adjuditn have progrsed rough rrponnce. As activists the neteen-seventi mounted a broad anti-rape movement, femist legal theorists fought judicial provisns that discrimated agast rape victims. (The clud l requirg that the victim physilly rist her attacker and provi rroboratg evince, as well as utnary stctns to juri about the danger of false accatns.) At the Cosby trial, the fact of cultural progrs—and s attendant backlash—felt ever-prent. I talked to more than a few journalists and sual observers who seemed glad that our nceptn of sexual asslt has expand but who hated to apply new standards retroactively—who said thgs like “He fely did , but, back then, everyone else did , too.” Deborah Tuerkheimer, a law profsor at Northwtern, told me recently, “Over all the years, there may have been a reluctance to hold Cosby acuntable for acts that, at the time, didn’t seem like sexual asslt. But now the acts have a different meang. People like Gloria have advanced an outcry.” Tuerkheimer noted that Allred had helped ph the se to trial multiple ways. She had bolstered Constand’s credibily by enuragg women to e forward and publicizg their acunts. “She was able to help nstct a narrative that ma very difficult, at least outsi the urtroom, to be dismissive of what otherwise would have been dismissed,” Tuerkheimer said.</p><p class="paywall">Cosby and Allred have lived much of their liv strange and strikg proximy. Born four years apart, they both grew up poor Philalphia, and attend high schools down the block om each other. They both received master’s gre tn and later beme famo and wealthy Los Angel. For most of the two and a half s that Allred spent Philalphia, she was an energetic extrovert wh no ia, she says, that women occupied a sendary place the world. She was born Gloria Rachel Bloom on July 3, 1941, to two dotg Jewish parents, Morris and Stella. Stella was English; she and Morris had met, Gloria says they told her, “ Baltimore, on a streetr named sire.” Both left school after the eighth gra. Morris worked six days a week as a door-to-door salman, hawkg Fuller bsh and photographic enlargements, and the fay (Gloria was the only child) lived a row hoe southwt Philly. They didn’t attend synagogue together—Morris was too by, and Stella explored many relig ias, gog to a church one week and an Ethil Culture meetg the next—but Gloria went there for Sunday school, and was nfirmed. Her parents were termed to do well by her: on days when they had only enough money for one movie ticket, Morris would send her to the theatre and wa for her a nearby park. When Gloria was junr high, she and her mother would put on “Amerin Bandstand” and dance around the livg room after school.</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-4 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall">At fourteen, Gloria was admted to the Philalphia High School for Girls, which was, at the time, one of only a handful of all-girls public schools the untry, and highly petive. The women who ran the school molled a matter-of-fact female ambn that seemed, durg Gloria’s protected adolcence, galvanizg but hardly fiant. On the first day of her hman year, she met Fern Brown—now Fern Brown Caplan—who was seated next to her homeroom. In an anecdote she’s had to relate to dozens of journalists and gala atten over the years, Caplan remembers Allred leang over and sayg, “You look like you need help. Can I help?” They beme bt iends.</p><p class="paywall">“We were different high school,” Caplan told me. “I was very stud, a big nerd. She was a cheerlear, class treasurer.” In Allred’s memoir, “Fight Back and W,” published 2006, she reunts the story of a boy askg her how she uld be a cheerlear at an all-girls high school: “ ‘What’s there to cheer about?’ he asked.” Caplan scrib Allred as “always a limelight person,” the most popular girl at every synagogue dance. Allred’s memory is slightly different. “All I did was study,” she told me. Girls High was rigoro, and she wasn’t a proto-Gloria Allred yet. Except, she add, after thkg about , she did receive a class award for Most Persistent. You n’t let the stori die—you have to keep them the news.” Advertisers pulled away om O’Reilly, and he was oted om the work. Bloom also reprents two of Cosby’s accers, cludg the actrs Janice Dickson.</p><p class="paywall">Allred reprents thirty-three of them. (There are nearly sixty. Allred has taken Cosby’s posn a civil su brought agast him, California, by Judy Huth, which is set to go to trial 2018.) Half a dozen Cosby accers me to Norristown to observe the trial. On the first day, two of them squealed when they saw Allred the bathroom, and ran over to give her a hug. Durg the trial, Allred sat the urtroom and scribbled not on a legal pad. One day, her phone rang, and she was booted om the urtroom; a Page Six em about was all over my Twter feed when I next checked my phone. Each afternoon, she walked out onto the steps of the urthoe, and the meras assembled ont of her an enormo flashg scm.</p><p class="paywall">The prosecutn had proffered thirteen of the accers as “prr bad-act wns,” hopg to tablish Cosby’s mod operandi. In pretrial proceedgs, Cosby’s fense team had argued that Allred, who reprented ten of the thirteen, had anized this mpaign herself. Allred, they said, had ntacted law enforcement on behalf of her clients; she had flown to Philalphia to speak wh the district attorney. On the Sunday after the trial began, I met Allred for dner at the rtrant the Doubletree Hotel where she’d been stayg. Pickg at a pre salad, she rpond to the fense’s allegatns. “I didn’t say if any of that was te. But if is te—a big so what. Why shouldn’t I speak to law enforcement if my client has rmatn that uld help wh a se?” (Barbara Ashcroft, a law profsor at Temple and a former chief of the Montgomery County sex-crim un, told me that sex crim are often reported by someone other than the victim—a mother, a iend, a civil lawyer.) The fense attorney Angela Agsa noted the siari the women’s acunts, and suggted that this reflected Allred’s manipulatns, rather than Cosby’s pattern of behavr. The thirteen wns were wnowed down to one, Kelly Johnson, whose alleged asslt had occurred most recently, 1996.</p><p class="paywall">Johnson, who is reprented by Allred, was the prosecutn’s first wns. She had worked at William Morris as an assistant to Cosby’s agent. Cosby took an tert her reer, she said, and this led to an vatn for lunch a hotel bungalow. There he gave her a pill that pacated her, and molted her. When Johnson was on the stand, the fense attorney Brian McMonagle asked her aga and aga, wh slight variatns, whether Allred had wrten the statement that she gave at their ial prs nference. Each time, Johnson said no. He then asked if Allred had told her what to say on the stand, if she had fed her certa words. “No,” Johnson said aga, lookg bewilred. McMonagle’s cross-examatn eventually brought her to tears.</p><p class="paywall">Johnson’s story had obv parallels wh Constand’s: a work relatnship, an offer of pills. Both women knew that Cosby wield power over their profsnal liv and they behaved acrdgly. They both ttified that they had never been terted sexual ntact wh him, nor had they nsented to such a thg. There was not much disagreement about the basic facts of the se—the jury’s lculatns pend on whether small nsistenci, both perceived and actual, Constand’s ttimony ma her seem like a liar, and whether her story, much of which Cosby had rroborated, met the jurors’ unrstandg of sexual asslt.</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-5 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall">In a police terview, Cosby scribed his behavr that night by sayg, “I go to the area that is somewhere between permissn and rejectn. I was not stopped.” Over dner, Allred repeated the le to me, crlo. “ ‘Somewhere between permissn and rejectn’? What is that? I always say—you’re eher pregnant or you’re not. There’s no -between.” I asked her if she’d ever talked about nsent growg up. “Absolutely not,” she said. “We didn’t talk about rape, or abortn, or child support, or sexual harassment, or sex discrimatn, or anythg. It was like the Cave Age.” She relled one day durg a perd when she was teachg Philalphia and mutg to N.Y.U. for her master’s gree. In a philosophy class, she brought up the lack of rights for black Amerins, and her profsor asked her, What about women’s rights? “What rights don’t women have?” she remembered sayg. “All he said was ‘You’ll fd out.’ ”</p><p class="has-dropp has-dropp__lead-standard-headg paywall">Allred majored English at Penn, and wrote her unrgraduate honors this on Ralph Ellison, Alex Haley, and Jam Baldw. She graduated as a sgle mother, “flat broke, recently divorced, and uncid about how to make my way life,” she wr her memoir. She took a job as an assistant buyer at a Gimbels partment store, earng seventy-five dollars a week. When she found out that a male assistant buyer earned nety, she asked about the discrepancy and was told that her lleague need to earn a fay wage. (He was a bachelor, Allred says.) She left Gimbels and took the exam to bee a public-school teacher, and began teachg at Benjam Frankl High, which had an all-male and mostly black stunt body. Bray wasn’t payg child support, and she had a hard time makg ends meet. Shortly before she moved to Los Angel, 1966—“I figured, if I was gog to be poor, then I’d be poor where ’s warm,” she wr—she hired an attorney, and Bray was arrted for nonpayment. The charge was dropped soon afterward; Allred don’t remember why.</p><p class="paywall">In L.A., Allred and her dghter moved to a rented hoe jt south of the 101. They shared wh one of Allred’s girliends, who had three dghters and had recently left her hband. She started teachg at another mostly black high school, Watts. This was a year after the rts. Allred still didn’t thk of her life as “e-oriented,” she told me. Durg her first year California, she went to Apul for a vatn. One night, a lol physician asked her out to dner. He had to make a few hoe lls first, he said, and they stopped by a motel. He took her to an empty room, pulled out a gun, and raped her. She didn’t report the crime to the police, fearg that she wouldn’t be believed. Soon after returng home, she disvered that she was pregnant.</p><p class="paywall">It was seven years before Roe v. Wa, and abortn was illegal California. She ma an appotment for one and went alone, as stcted. She began hemorrhagg after she got home, and the man who had performed the procre cled to offer guidance. Allred was aaid to go to the hospal. She sat at home, feverish and bleedg; eventually, her roommate lled an ambulance, which took her to a hospal ward filled wh other women who had had illegal abortns. She didn’t realize until later that patients around her had died. (The two lawyers have publicly sparred the past.) Regardls of the oute, Cosby’s reer is over, and his legacy is s. There is a growg sense among women that is now possible to name, shame, and prosecute sexual predators—and that they will fd public support if they do. In his closg argument for the fense, McMonagle had shouted, “We know why we’re here! At a prs nference, Allred poted out that Talackova hadn’t asked Tmp for any proof that he was a naturally born man. In a ment to TMZ, Tmp took the reference to his genalia a step further: “I thk Gloria would be very imprsed wh me, I really do.” Talackova was ultimately allowed to pete, but Tmp wouldn’t drop . On Twter, he asked, “Is Gloria a man or a woman????---- few men would know the answer to that one.” Two years later, one of Allred’s clients was the greenroom before an appearance on Fox News, and Tmp popped . “Gloria is absolutely relentls,” he said. “Never, ever, ever, ever, ever fire her,” he add, magnanimoly, an anecdote that Allred later relayed to the Daily Beast and repeated to me.</p><p class="paywall">At a Thai rtrant near her office, I asked Allred if the electn had changed her sense of moral progrs the Uned Stat. “The electn was a heartbreaker,” she said. “But that’s the way ’s always been for genr progrs, which has always been behd racial progrs—two steps forward, one step back.” She was a legate for Hillary Clton, wh whom she is iendly. The two have more than a few quali mon. They are both proment femists whose ambn has grated on the public. (Which is to say that they are both proment, amb femists.) They speak like people who long ago found the story they wanted to stick to. Three days before the Inguratn, she held a prs nference wh Summer Zervos, a former nttant on “The Apprentice,” who alleged that Tmp had harassed and groped her at the Beverly Hills Hotel 2007 and then took back a job offer after she rebuffed him. They announced that Zervos was sug Tmp for famatn. On January 21st, Allred walked wh Zervos the Women’s March on Washgton, flanked by other Tmp accers. “It changed Summer,” Allred said. “It’s a very sry thg to have a lawsu agast the Print of the Uned Stat, particularly this Print. But the Women’s March showed Summer that she was not alone.”</p><p class="paywall">Marc Kasowz, Tmp’s New York lawyer, has filed several motns argug that Tmp has Printial immuny. In a brief filed July, he argued that Tmp’s statements about the accers should be seen as mpaign rhetoric tend to secure a victory, and should not be taken lerally. But I got the distct sense that sometim, at least, she fds her work fun.
