For his <a href=">follow-up</a>, which me out on November 14, Weir wanted to try somethg different: <em>Artemis</em> follows Jazz Bashara, a 20-somethg woman of lor who liv on the first (and only) cy on the Moon, where she, well, moonlights as a smuggler.</p><p class="paywall">Essentially, Artemis is a lunar sci-fi thriller, and arriv at a high pot cultural moon lunacy—entreprenrs like Elon Mk are fatuated wh the ia of settlements there, and startups like Moon Exprs see Luna as a base for further spaceward travel. And acrdg to <a href=">Stephen Hawkg</a>, humany should probably relote to the Moon to pe Earth’s impendg doom. Mark. Watney.” And, that cintal moment, I felt more nnected to Mark than I did to Jazz throughout <em>Artemis</em>. In my twenti, unsure about what to do wh my life, ually broke. But about 50 pag , I noticed a phrase that felt a ltle weird, and as I kept readg, I started to pick up on a pattern.</p><p class="paywall">Early the book, a letter to her pen pal Kelv, Jazz refers to herself as "light brown.” Weir tells Jazz is of Sdi Arabian scent, and impli that she was raised Mlim, but is no longer practicg. Now, I’ve been a light-skned black woman my entire life, and while I’ve heard plenty of people refer to themselv as "light-skned" or even "light,” I’ve never heard "light brown" before. But then also, one of Jazz’s boyiends has sex wh a 14-year-old girl, and that’s allowed bee “different cultur have different sexual morals, so Artemis don’t have age-of-nsent l at all.”</p><p class="paywall">This psdolibertarian attu toward sex laws mirrors Weir’s hands-off stance toward puttg ser topics his fictn. Weir has stated more than once, terviews about <em>Artemis</em>, that he means no polics by all. “[My stori] have no subtext or msage,” he <a href=">told</a> <em>The New York Tim</em>. “If you thk you see somethg like that, 's your head, not me.”</p><p class="paywall">But, at least some mos of lerary cricism and nsumptn, <a href=">thorial tent</a>— this se, Weir’s sire for our apolil prehensn—matters not at all. The text stands alone, and means to each rear what will. And I, for one, thk nsent laws and, say, the black markets which Jazz operat, are polil.</p><p class="paywall"><strong>Namaste:</strong> I thk that ment gets at one of the key issu—regardls of whether Weir tend to make Artemis a “polil” book, choosg a woman of lor as his ma character ma impossible for the story to be left out of nversatns about genr and race.</p><p class="paywall">Weir’s ment about Artemis beg a society whout sexism feels siar to race-related ia of “lor-bldns.” You’ve probably heard the argument before, when someone says “I only believe one race: the human race.” The ia behd this is that if you don’t see racial difference, you n’t possibly uphold equaly. However, many scholars argue that by refg to acknowledge when racial discrimatn do exist, lor-bldns actually supports systems of racial equaly.</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-2 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall"><strong>Sl:</strong> On the other hand, <em>Artemis</em> foc nstantly about Jazz’s genr and terurse explos, a way that seems meant to telegraph that Artemisians are beyond sexual stigma. But then there are moments like this one, when Jazz is talkg to her father’s lleague: “You were nice ltle girl,” the lleague says. “Now you are bad.”</p><p class="paywall">“Okay...,” rponds Jazz. “Look I want to talk to you about somethg—”</p><p class="paywall">“You are unmarried and have sex wh many men,” says the lleague. Jazz then not, to herself, that the woman’s son has sex wh many men.</p><p class="paywall">This teractn says to me that perhaps men havg lots of unwed sex (even queer sex) is okay. But not so much for women.</p><p class="paywall"><strong>Namaste:</strong> And the same way Artemis may not be the sexually liberated environment pass self off as, perhaps Jazz is not the sex-posive role mol she is assumed to be. Sure, Jazz lik sex, and she's fortable talkg about , but is that really all tak to have a progrsive view on sex? I mean the notorly sexist ia of “locker room talk” checks both those box. It seems like this characterizatn of Jazz assum that sexually progrsive women approach sex siar ways to men, when really sex posivy is about havg a healthy and nuanced attu towards sex, a pth that Bee a gay character says .</p><p class="paywall">Later, the bartenr (affectnately?) lls Dale an “arse band.” Generally, when Dale is around, Jazz mak sure to let know that, hey, never fet, he’s the gay one, gay AF, sex wh men, don’t like girls, nope, not at all. Jazz is mad that Tyler left her for Dale (fair enough, although her relatnship wh her closeted boyiend was probably not on firm long-term footg anyway), so she herself may be more apt to mentn his orientatn. But (and mentns om other characters) land wrong, like if my iends said, “Good to see you, gay iend,” when I walked to the room. I wouldn’t like that, were I here or Artemis.</p><p class="paywall">And Artemis, Weir gned up a society full of different rac, queer people, and a petent, crafty, mouthy, smart, pennt, sexually unhibed female character. And that unts for a lot. But the world uld have been built and wrten to do somethg eper. Not to nta a “polil msage,” but to acknowledge that even Moon Land, life and race and genr are plex.
