Unlike some larger ci that tend to have one specific “gayborhood, ” the LGBTQ muny Ann Arbor is sprkled throughout the cy, and tly, anywhere the cy would make a wonrful place to ll home.
While many gays and lbians live throughout Ann Arbor, there is an pecially high ncentratn of LGBT people Kerrytown. Aut Bar is a much-loved gay bar & grill the cy known for s excellent Mexin food, strong drks, pool tabl, and foc on muny fundraisg. Yet I did check at the Town Bar and the Flame Bar, both gay bars, om time to time, and went there wh iends, jt to sample a different environment for a change.
Also, as young micians about town, we went to many bars, but also to the two ma gay bars we knew of, the Town Bar at 212 E. Although we sometim went to eher of the gay bars, was the Town Bar that I would vis most often.

One of my band members, my keyboard player was gay, whose room was jt across the hall om me the Prime Mover Hoe at 114 N. And the graduate library, seemed there were plenty of gay men there, some of them our boss. And the library folks went to the gay bars downtown Ann Arbor regularly, particular the Town Bar, so if we went there, we probably knew someone, bee we worked at the library together.
My first troductn to ‘gayns” Ann Arbor was probably the late 1950s and early 1960s, bee at the si door to the Michigan Unn, was a ltle circle drive where folks were dropped off, and a long low cement wall that reached out to State Street. So, that was my troductn to the Ann Arbor gay scene, playg folk guar on the lawn, while all kds of ‘cisg” went on right before our ey.
So, while perhaps Ann Arbor was perhaps a ltle shy of gay people back the late 1950s and on to the 1960s, yet they are shy no more here 2022 and were really not that visible back the day eher. The Flame did not start out as Ann Arbor’s gay bar nor as a rallyg pot for gays and lbians the area. It would take a few more years for the Flame to bee what was for four s: the only gay bar Ann Arbor.
Although the Flame beme a gay bar those years, Harvey did not ci to turn to a gay spot. Sce the owners were gay, the Town Bar attracted a gay crowd and was the gay bar of the time. The Town Bar seems to have been a cherished place for the gays of the area until the owners cid to feature live mic the bar.
Instead of creatg a new bar, the newly barls gay populatn started to lonize the bar across the street. As Harry explas, the gays jt started to leave the Town Bar and began to patronize the Flame. In her classic article, “The Homosexual Bar, ” Nancy Achill not that “homosexuals rarely filtrate an already tablished bar and make their own; a gay bar is gay om the begng” (179).
