moment’s thought for a uple of obscure French poets and their fate. (The poets themselv are not obscure, but their work often is, and liberately so.) The poets are <a href=">Arthur Rimbd</a> and Pl Verlae, and the fate that they, or their remas—or if you are a romantic, as they were, their ghosts—face is whether they should be moved to the posn of the hight imagable honor their untry, or whether they would be better honored by beg prived of the honor.</p><p class="paywall">The place to which their remas might be moved is the Pantheon, the Fifth Arrondissement of Paris. Built the late eighteenth century as a domed church molled on, though much larger and signifintly ls shapely than, the ancient Pantheon Rome, was transformed durg the Revolutn to a kd of msolm for the great figur of France, an Adémie Française for the glor ceased. Voltaire, Zola, and Marie Curie are all terred there. Its purpose is a b like that of the Poet’s Corner, Wtmster Abbey—to honor the culturally magnificent. (Ameri has no real equivalent.) Well worth a vis for s terr’s gloomy granur, the Pantheon is a betiful climb up the steep streets of the Fifth, s entrance directly oppose a hotel wh the bt name of any the world, the Hôtel s Grands Homm—prumably, you have to tablish your cultural signifince before they give you your room key.</p><p class="paywall">Rimbd’s remas are currently terred the provc, and Verlae’s elsewhere Paris; the ntroversy over movg them riv om the still-ronant sndal attached to their liv. Bob Dylan, “You’re Gonna Make Me Lonome When You Go,” om his 1975 album, “<a href=">Blood on the Tracks</a>,” pared his love life to Verlae and Rimbd’s, and he didn’t mean as a cheerful domtic reference. Their story, memorialized untls retellgs (cludg a not-entirely-terrible movie om 1995, starrg Leonardo DiCapr and David Thewlis) is faiar to every stunt of morn Wtern lerature. In the goln artistic of the eighteen-seventi, while the Imprsnists rema art, Rimbd, then a prec sixteen-year-old provcial kid, sent his verse to Verlae, a olr and a risg, if avant-gar, poet. Verlae was taken wh the poems and even more so wh the youth, when he arrived Paris, where Verlae lived semi-bourgeois fort wh his wife and children.</p><p class="paywall">The two men plunged to an illic love affair, fuelled by absthe and opium, which beme the very mol of French <em>amour fou</em>—the crazy love that, as a practice and a fascatn, domated the avant-gar poetic imagatn om Symbolism to Surrealism and beyond. It eventually led them to the two standard s of French exile: London, first, and then Bssels. In Bssels, Verlae, the midst of an ebriated lover’s quarrel, <a href=">fired a revolver</a> at Rimbd, woundg him the wrist. Verlae was sentenced to two years prison for crimal asslt, assumed to be aggravated by homosexualy. While there, he nverted to Catholicism.</p><p class="paywall">Rimbd, still only twenty, gave up lerature for a reer as, among other thgs, an arms aler , among other plac, Abyssia, om where mors of his ntued existence ocsnally ma their way to France. He died at the age of thirty-seven. (There’s an unfettable image of him as a vastatgly betiful youth, alongsi Verlae, Henri Fant-Latour’s great group portra “<a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">By the Table</a>,” om 1872.)</p><div><div class="ConsumerMarketgUnThemedWrapper-iUTMTf jssHut nsumer-marketg-un nsumer-marketg-un--article-mid-ntent" role="prentatn" aria-hidn="te"><div class="nsumer-marketg-un__slot nsumer-marketg-un__slot--article-mid-ntent nsumer-marketg-un__slot---ntent"></div><div class="journey-un"></div></div></div><p class="paywall">He and Verlae both changed poetry, ways that ntue to affect our own time. Dylan’s mentn of them was not mere name-droppg. By the ttimony of Dylan’s mentor Dave Van Ronk, was a paperback py of morn French verse, heavy wh unrlg—which a h-om-Mnota Dylan took down om Van Ronk’s bookshelf, on Macdougal Street, 1960—that provid the impet for that poet’s own stream of imagery. Rimbd’s “A Season Hell” gave the ia that poetry should be, first of all, a journey to extreme experience, evinced not by a herent evotn of a story but by subversive imag and sensual evotns that subvert logic and language self. (Dylan’s great songs om “Blon on Blon”—“Sad-Eyed Lady of the Lowlands” and “Visns of Johanna”—are straight applitns of Rimbd’s symbolist methods to popular mic.)</p><div class="Contaer-bkChBi byNLHx"></div><p class="paywall">Dylan asi, no poetic practice, or poets’ liv, have been more fluential. Rimbd is the exemplar of the mad youth, the <em>poete md</em>, that ns right to Kurt Coba, and also the mol of the myster disappearance, which touch legends as different as those of Ambrose Bierce and Jack Black. (Not the actor Jack Black, but the California vagabond whose memoir has the bt tle Amerin lerature, “<a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">You Can’t W</a>,” and who disappeared, New York, the neteen-thirti.) Verlae, turn, is the morn mol of the sublime-if-not-que-prehensible poet, his verse forms streamg to those of everyone om Mallarmé to Wallace Stevens.</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-1 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall">The move to brg Rimbd and Verlae together the Pantheon began last year, when several wrers—some gay, some French, and at least one of them Amerin—lnched a petn. Soon rerced by ne French former misters of culture—and, eventually, Print Emmanuel Macron’s current culture mister, Roselyne Bachelot—the appeal of the petn was that the cln of Verlae and Rimbd would both crease the “diversy” of those honored the Pantheon and put an end to s implic homophobia. It began, “Arthur Rimbd and Pl Verlae are two major poets of our language. They enriched our herage wh their geni. They are two symbols of diversy. They had to endure the implable homophobia of their time. They are the French Osr Wils.”</p><p class="paywall">The nceptns turned out to be poisoned chalic, placg the appeal outsi the ma currents of French culture. The ll for diversy rang spicly Amerin ton, while the parison to Osr Wil, a great w but hardly a great poet, seemed to rce the origaly of the te French poetic kd. French snobbery met the ethic of French subversive art. The reactn was stant, voluble, and negative—on several onts. The right-wg newspaper <em>Le Figaro</em> <a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">reported</a> that Rimbd’s great-grand-niece, wh the vtig of bourgeois stuffs still astonishgly strong, disapproved of the ia, ironilly, bee ma too much of his brief nnectn to Verlae. “Rimbd did not start his life wh Verlae and did not end wh him, the are jt a few years of his youth,” she sniffed, rather overlookg the pot that those few years are the only reason we remember him now.</p><p class="paywall">The left-wg <em>Libératn</em> <a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">published</a> an attack on the proposed move unr the headle “<em>Verlae Et Rimbd: trop svag pour le Panthéon</em>”—too wild for the Pantheon. A unter-petn agast the terment was <a href=">lnched</a> the center-left <em>Le Mon</em>, on the same ground: that would honor two damned poets wh too much bliss. Wh maximum French rhetoril versn, the origal petners then returned to say that “ is not that we act, our ey, to stutnalize Rimbd and Verlae; is to stutnalize the Pantheon . . . . But we might still ask what we, across the sea and mostly cut off om Parisian culture, make of . Surely, the first irony is most self-evint: while we are tearg down statu and dismantlg old memorials, orr to rectify old wrongs, the French impulse is to reject the act of memorializg self as aquate to our memori. To honor Rimbd or Verlae as though they were safely nventnal figur, as ornaments of official culture, is to ny the relevance of their example.</p><p class="paywall">At a eper level, the argument remds that the battle between the bourgeois and the bohemian has an edge France that we n srcely unrstand Ameri. The “bourgeois” France is, if not an actual social class, an actual cultural force, or assumed to be one: a force of orr, property, and regulary erng even the manners of love affairs. To be bohemian is not merely to turn that orr on s head but to reject altogether, to turn one’s back on any stcture of property or approval or orr, and to accept love and art their herently unmanageable forms. In Ameri, we admire an dac voyage that is at last steered safely to port—the voyage of Dylan himself, beribboned and amicized, is of this kd. In France, the dream is still of the voyage out, sails unfurled, on a roilg wave amid a permanent tempt. We are not at all surprised to see yterday’s avant-gar artist turned to today’s acknowledged master. In France, even a century later, to see those who had the dacy to dare turned to an image of those who had the shrewdns to subm feels like a feat. (The honored avant-gar may <em>live</em> very bourgeois liv France, but they would prefer not to be <em>seen</em> that way.)</p><p class="paywall">Well, the pragmatic Amerin imagatn mands, would Verlae and Rimbd have <em>wanted</em> the honor? Here one n answer only wh a pragmatic Amerin “Uh, y and no.” No, bee Rimbd himself once <a href=">lled</a> the Pantheon an “official acropolis which tak morn barbary to new extrem.” But, y, bee wrers always fear the annihilatn of time, so anythg that secur their words om the rrosive salt of the passg ag is posive. People of actn may have to endure memorials; men and women of letters should be honored by the trac that they have left on the page.
