It was a sacrifice; Diggs only wanted to do the job if his whole head was , and he didn't want to disappot the kids by beg yet another burned-out teacher jt there for the paycheck. Still, he ss up straighter and talks emphatilly when scribg his time as a teacher, and clearly loved beg part of his stunt's liv. </p><p data-no-id="16" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">"The reason you wre somethg that is excg and visceral is to force people to hear what you have to say, pecially if you're any kd of margalized muny where people don't want to listen," he says, flashg his fect se. "On one of the last dns I did for a mercial, there was a room full of people like me," he says. "To walk to a stg room full of people who look like you is a crazy thg. What is the thg that necsat all of havg the exact same sha of sk and havg the same hair? What about this odorant mercial needs that? [It was] like the light-skned, big-haired sectn of Cost. I don't even thk I stayed for the dn." </p><p data-no-id="22" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">Based on his experienc wh Hollywood typestg, he certaly never dreamed he would end up portrayg a U.S. print on Broadway. Even though he's ccial to the DNA of his role <em data-redactor-tag="em" data-verified="redactor">Haton</em>—Diggs worked on the mil s genis, flyg to New York to participate early readgs of the show—he wasn't at all nfint that he would get the part once a full productn was mounted. "I jt assumed I was a placeholr," he says. "I loved dog so much that I was jt gog to do every time I uld." It was a team effort to get him to the stage—his mom even helped him fight for the role. "I was talkg to my mom the other day about buyg tickets to see my girliend Tridad," he says. "She lghed and said, 'Remember when you uld only fly when I had equent flyer om my bs trips on Southwt? And that was lerally the only way you went anywhere?' The producers flew me out sometim, but several of my trips to do workshops for <em data-redactor-tag="em" data-verified="redactor">Haton</em> were on my own dime—or on my mom's equent flyer ." "The liftyle the Bay Area is tough to beat— was relatively cheap, great food, lots of outdoor space and art space, and ways to be spired at the time. It was a bean to artists who had been trated somewhere else—you uld get the thgs that you need pretty easily. I thk 's important that your work is nversatn wh artists your muny. It's nice to e om a place where I actually had and have a muny of artists who ll each other on the phone and make somethg new."</p><p data-no-id="42" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">He's worried that won't always be the se. "Neher of my parents live Oakland anymore," he says. "They both got priced out. The ti is changg very quickly. I worry about the staabily of a viable arts scene there, bee 's gettg really hard to get the thgs that you need now." </p><p data-no-id="44" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">That might expla why he's slowly brgg his iends to New York orr to ntue workg wh them. "He lerally moved to New York bee I wasn't rpondg to him," Diggs lghs as he gtur toward Casal. The two have an easy language together, punctuated by lghter and fishg each other's stori. It's not about keepg real—Diggs is buoyed by his iendships, and the history they share is an tegral part of who he is at his re. </p><p data-no-id="46" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">"Remember that time we played a show Sacramento, and then we got a ll to help wh a documentary for our iend's productn pany?" Diggs says to Casal. "Our dmmer had no ia. We were dog a show, and then we got the ll, and said we're gog to Los Angel right now." Casal, lghg, chim . "There's no time to drop you off!" Did they kd of kidnap their dmmer? "Yeah!" Diggs says excedly. "The photoshoot was at 9 a.m., and was 2 a.m. when we got the ll. We drove down, and then drove back the same night." To Casal, was a no-braer. "You do for iends," he says.
