His e is roughly what my e would be if I got my paycheck every day stead of every two weeks. He and his wife have a cy home Hollywood, a untry home Connecticut, and an apartment the Wt Eighti Manhattan, one block om the park. He employs a personal assistant, Cathy, who was Miss Iowa 1992 and first nner-up Atlantic Cy, where she won the swimsu petn. He has nerve, charm, style, talent, good looks, a quick sense of humor, and the whole-body flexibily of a newborn. He rarely pays for cloth or a haircut. He always fli first class. None of which has ever ma me wish even a ltle b that I was livg his life stead of me. But recently he told me somethg that was so simple was almost cel. We were his livg room, was late, we'd had a uple of beers, and he was tryg to expla somethg about his work. Not the perks, but the work self, the act of actg. </p><p data-no-id="2" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">"It always feels like battg practice felt to me," he said. "I always wanted more. It was fun. It wasn't signifint, wasn't the game, but always felt good. In a life of total cisn about virtually every large and small qutn--I still don't know if I want whole k or skim k, every time I walk the store 's a stggle, I have ma no policy cisn there--I've always wanted to do this."</p><p data-no-id="4" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">I love my work, too, but even on the very bt days would never occur to me to pare what I do to battg practice. Sudnly, for the first time my life, I envied my brother.</p><p data-no-id="6" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">I'D LEFT BOSTON EARLY on a snowy morng January, arrived Los Angel before noon, and drove straight to the stud Burbank. Brad showed up a few mut later. I hadn't seen him ne months--except on televisn every Wednday night--and those first few moments after we hugged were unexpectedly awkward. Instead of seeg my own brother standg before me, I was seeg Josh Lyman, puty Whe Hoe chief of staff. I'd fotten (or maybe I'd never noticed before) that he has green flecks his iris. His hair was redr than I remembered. His head looked bigger. </p><p data-no-id="8" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">We're two and a half years apart, a pair of afterthoughts that didn't occur to our parents until they were well to their forti and had three kids already, the youngt a earlier. First me, then Brad. Mom says the only reason she got pregnant the last time was so that I wouldn't grow up feelg like an only child; she was givg me a playmate. It took me a while to appreciate the gift. Brad and I were raised a Quaker hoehold, but whenever he whacked me, even by accint, I'd go nuts. My favore target was the upper back, between the shoulr blas (so I wouldn't bise his kidneys). He was a cutup om the start, a jokter at the dner table, a ham, but also, for such a big, handsome kid, surprisgly agile. In gra school, he'd start gettg anx toward the end of every summer, worried that this would be the year he wouldn't make any iends. The sprg day he ught me smokg dope out by the garage--I was tenth gra, he was eighth--he ran off tears. I was aaid I'd srred him for life.</p><p data-no-id="10" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">That summer, 1973, Dad swched jobs. We moved om a suburb of Philalphia to a place lled Maple Bluff, on the east si of Madison, Wisns, which put both East High. One day durg my senr year, I was stg wh my back to the wall the big vered urtyard at East that we lled the mall. There were lockers and bench and piic tabl there, and people had their spots. Crossg the mall between class was like crossg a stage, always nerve-rackg--for me, anyway. But here me my brother, maybe thirty feet away when I spotted him, movg a way I'd never seen him move before. So easy and so ol, almost floatg, as if he were kg of the mall or somethg. I was dumbfound. Who's that? I was wonrg. Then he ught my eye, and that stant, he wered, as if somewhere overhead a puppeteer had abptly dipped the strgs. His shoulrs dropped, his ch fell, his prance beme a shuffle. He looked like my brother aga. </p><p data-no-id="12" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">Years later, I remd him of that moment. "I figured was like, 'Oh, my big brother jt saw me, and he knows I'm jt me,' " I suggted.</p><p data-no-id="14" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">"How about if that was me?" my brother said.</p><p data-no-id="16" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">SUNDAY AFTERNOON, the Goln Glob are tonight, and feels as if we're gog to a weddg. (My brother's always been a hugger. He don't know this, but as a young man llege, he once hugged my mother so tightly he broke one of her ribs. "He jt picked me up and whirled me around, and I heard go," Mom told me. "But I didn't want to mentn . It's his first nomatn for a major award. Maybe that's why he keeps sighg heavily and flappg his lips and mutterg, "God, I hate this." Jane is lmer. She's been here already. Before the Emmys last September, people kept tellg her she was sure to w bt actrs a edy seri for her role as Lois, the manic mom Mallm the Middle. As happened, Patricia Heaton (Everybody Lov Raymond) won stead. At least she don't have to wre another acceptance speech. </p><p data-no-id="20" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">Brad and Jane met New York 1989. They're both om Wisns, both are classilly traed (Jane at Yale, Brad at Juilliard), and both began their reers as stage actors New York. Both land what looked like their breakthrough rol early on wh big-name stars who had recently won Osrs--Jane wh Meryl Streep and Robert De Niro Fallg Love, Brad wh Clt Eastwood and Kev Costner A Perfect World--and both movi flopped. Both subsequently ma a very good livg on stage and screen for years whout ever que beg famo. And both were wary of televisn. Jane walked away om her recurrg role as a p on Hill Street Blu to do Fallg Love. Producer Steven Boch kdly offered to have her character hospalized for a few episos, but she wasn't terted. "I said, 'No, no, no, kill me,' " Jane says. " 'Thank you very much, but I'm gog to do movi now.' It's chaos: klieg lights, flashbulbs, a helipter thumpg overhead, paparazzi scuzzy tuxedos, and the rpet, the long red rpet, a chute led wh meras and screamers. "Brad!" "Jane!" "Let's see the back of the drs, Jane!" "Can I get one sgle, please?" </p><p data-no-id="26" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">"Try to keep movg," the secury guard tells me, and I'm willg. But Brad's publicist grabs my arm. "Stay right where you are," he whispers. "You own this red rpet." </p><p data-no-id="28" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">Hardly, but my brother do. "Hi, Jack," he says, clappg someone on the back. Jack Lemmon turns around: "How you dog, Brad?" And afterward, walkg out of the hotel to meet the limoe, I'll be stck once aga by the way my brother mov. </p><p data-no-id="32" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">THE REASON THAT ACTORS are basilly alholics wag to happen," my brother explas, "is that if you are the personaly that at some pot your life go to a Broadway play or se a movie and somewhere your md you're thkg, I should be there. I should be up on a screen. I should be someone that people go to see a play--if you are that kd of person, the kd of person who acts on that, you are the most assertive, extroverted .022 percent of the populatn. That's a very assertive chord your personaly. Then the bs renrs you totally passive. And there is no rolutn to assertive people a passive posn. It's rrosive. There's no rolutn to that." </p><p data-no-id="34" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">Of the one hundred thoand rd-rryg members of the Screen Actors Guild--enpassg pretty much everybody you see on televisn and the movi--only about 3 percent earn as much as $100,000 a year their chosen profsn. My brother has stggled over the years, often felt misst and unrvalued, wonred many tim if his life wasn't jt a potls pursu of affectn om strangers, but he has nearly always worked. Wh months of graduatg om Juilliard, he land a big role a Sam Shepard play, Curse of the Starvg Class, starrg Kathy Bat. Brad took over the role of Wley om Bill Pullman, who qu sudnly to do a movie, and played the part for seven months, eight shows--and $450--a week, nearly three hundred performanc, standg onstage every night dazed, wet, and naked wh a sacrificial lamb his arms. "I saw that play," says Richard Schiff, who plays Toby Ziegler on The Wt Wg and who's known Brad for twenty years. "I saw his naked butt. He was really good. My ex-wife went twice, which got me really upset. I remember her sayg, 'He's jt too good to be te. He's good-lookg and he's really nice and sweet and he's talented. He has to be gay, right?' "</p><p data-no-id="36" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">Still his twenti, he played Paris Romeo and Juliet at the New York Shakpeare Ftival, Cld Measure for Measure at Lln Center, Ths and Oberon A Midsummer Night's Dream Hartford, Richmond Richard III at the Guthrie Mneapolis, and the tle role Corlan at the Folger Shakpeare Theatre Washgton, D. C. In 1987, his first signifint film role, he played Elisabeth Shue's va high school boyiend Adventur Babystg. Not exactly Shakpeare, or even Shepard, but a big-time movie absolutely, wh a clever script and a fun ltle part.</p><p data-no-id="38" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">That same year he appeared Revenge of the Nerds II: Nerds Paradise (he played the evil print of the jock aterny), which was kd of a cult classic, you may rell, and pretty thrillg at the time, except that nearly ad-end his reer. My brother nfirmed his talent for playg the jerk. And for years afterward, he got way too many opportuni to rurrect the part. He played a slippery lawyer Philalphia, a relentls assistant DA The Client, an emotnally ad son Bicentennial Man, a Hollywood agent The Me. He was the bad guy who got what was g to him the end--the FBI sharpshooter kneed the nuts by Lra Dern A Perfect World, the obnox nephew strangled by Al Paco durg Thanksgivg dner Scent of a Woman, the procs server pistol-whipped Cobb. Invariably, those were moments when the dience cheered. Take a look: The guy who always played yuppie scum? That's my brother. "If you do an asshole well, you will be an asshole," says Brad now. "When you get to featur, the bt parts are taken, and what's left are the asshol. Every movie needs a villa. It ed to be that villas were Nazis. Now villas are whe guys wh recedg hairl and jobs, and that was somethg I uld do." </p><p data-no-id="40" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">His unniable achievement such rol reached s apex 1995 wh the release of Billy Madison, which Brad played the nnivg Eric Gordon, Adam Sandler's rival for the Madison fay empire. Two summers ago, Brad and I met Boston for the baseball All-Star Game, and even then, everywhere we went, people would regnize my brother and shout, "Bs ethics!" He unrstood the reference--to the tegory that prov to be Eric's downfall a climactic game show for all the marbl--but he still hasn't seen the movie. </p><p data-no-id="42" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">"We should rent ," I said.</p><p data-no-id="44" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">"I really don't want to," he said.</p><p data-no-id="46" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">"It might be good," I said.</p><p data-no-id="48" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">"I really don't want to."</p><p data-no-id="50" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">I didn't force the issue. Turns out he's never seen Bicentennial Man, eher. In fact, there are lots of movi and televisn shows my brother's been that he hasn't seen, cludg many episos of The Wt Wg. That's partly bee he's never gotten over the creeps of seeg himself on film. "It's jt weird," he says. "You're ed to seeg your face bee you see a mirror. But I'm not ed to seeg myself walk away om behd. It's really odd to see objectively what that looks like. It n be totally unnervg."</p><p data-no-id="52" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">But there's also the fear of fallg to what he lls a "shame spiral." One night when my brother was New York, a homels man stg on the siwalk at Eighty-eighth and Columb said to him, "I know you. You play the asshole movi." Brad gave him a buck anyway, then went straight home and lled his agent. "You have to do somethg," he plead. "People whout VCRs--people whout heatg--are typestg me!"</p><p data-no-id="54" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">IN THE SUMMER OF 1990, my brother was still sgle, livg a ty New York apartment wh a schizophrenic t named Blanche and his good dog, Le. He had jt fished a play, The Tower of Evil, at the Classic Stage Company downtown--for which the fal judgment of a review the Daily News was that "Bradley Whford as the queen's new love" is "ept"--when Aaron Sork abptly changed Brad's mood. Sork chose him to succeed Clark Gregg as the mare prosecutor A Few Good Men on Broadway. And later, when Timothy Bfield had to leave at the end of the summer to go back to thirtysomethg, my brother took over the lead. It was the biggt up of his young reer, an achievement every b as meangful as beg st The Wt Wg years later. The reviews were strong, his stature New York and Hollywood soared--and Sork loved him.</p><p data-no-id="56" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">But Tom Cise got the lead the movie. And my brother got pilots. He still appeared movi and plays, but televisn was llg. His first seri, a film-noir spoof 1993 lled Black Tie Affair, was yanked after four episos. It led to big rol a strg of other pilots, none of which got picked up. He remembers gog to a birthday party durg those first years Los Angel and meetg someone's five-year-old dghter. She had a qutn for him: "Are you an actor?" </p><p data-no-id="58" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">"And I said, 'Yeah, sweetie, I am,' " Brad rells. "And she said, 'Are you actg today?' And I said, 'No--no, I'm not.' 'Are you actg tomorrow?' Totally nocent. And I said, 'No.' And then she said, 'What do you do all day when you're not actg?' And immediately I said, 'I drive around L. A. and I try to make people like me.' The kid go, 'Oh,' and walks away. And I'm like, J, God! So pathetic!"</p><p data-no-id="60" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">Sork, meanwhile, was Hollywood wrg screenplays, meetg Brad ocsnally for dner or a drk. "I would see him some great thgs," Sork rells, "like Scent of a Woman. And then I'd see him some not-so-great thgs, as you will always see great actors not-so-great thgs bee they have to make a livg. But I would always thk to myself, My God, why isn't anybody g Brad Whford for somethg big?"</p><p data-no-id="62" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">In the fall of 1997, my brother and his wife were back east, expectg their first child. Brad was dog Three Days of Ra at the Manhattan Theatre Club, drivg two hours home every night to the farmhoe Connecticut. Sork was New York, too, holed up the Four Seasons Hotel, workg on the pilot for Sports Night. The eveng he fished, Sork says, "It really was rag outsi. I found myself a Kko's someplace. I prted out, and the first place I took was the stage door of the Manhattan Theatre Club, bee I wanted Brad to read ."</p><p data-no-id="64" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">My brother loved . Sork wanted to st him as one of the anchors. But Brad knew the show was a long shot; and even if turned out to be a h, he figured Sork would do what most creators of succsful televisn seri do--eventually pass off the wrg chor and move on to the next project. My brother already had a firm offer for what seemed like a sure thg: thirteen guaranteed episos of a new half-hour edy lled The Secret Liv of Men, about three divorced guys livg New York, wh a pilot directed by Jim Burrows of Cheers fame. Reluctantly he told Sork, "I n't."</p><p data-no-id="66" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">Sports Night aired to cril acclaim. It was fast, smart, different, and Sork was wrg every episo. Secret Liv, on the other hand, was a disaster. The crics hated . It wasn't jt that they thought was a bad show; was as if they were angry wh everyone volved for darg to put on the air. "Disda," is what my brother remembers. "Jt wav of disda." </p><p data-no-id="68" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">ABC KILLED SECRET LIVES after six episos. That same day, Sork lled Brad at home. My brother knew that Sork had been shoppg a one-hour drama about the Whe Hoe. "I'm really sorry," Sork said. "I know mt be tratg, but I want you to play Josh on The Wt Wg." Sork sent him the script that afternoon. Josh was charmg, tic, explosive, sexy, pable of moral outrage, and a ic to boot--an immensely appealg character and one wh whom Brad felt an immediate kship. In fact, Sork says now, he wrote Josh wh Brad md: "I tried to throw his strike zone."</p><p data-no-id="70" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">But my brother would still have to dn, and he prepared as if were the biggt dn of his life. "I was termed to prepare beyond overpreparedns," he says. "To prepare enough so that when I went there, would be as if I'd been dog this ten-mute play for six weeks. When you rehearse a role or even memorize l, 's like the procs of havg a stroke and reverg om . You go to the first read-through of a play and 's great. Then you break down and the Zen gets sucked out of , and you n't even put words together. And slowly you get better, and then all of a sudn you're up. For me, 's a sensatn of feelg like your blood is movg aga. In this se, I knew the l ld. I would image myself beg my worst emotnal state and try the scene. I'd act as if I was actg badly and try to do the scene well. I anticipated beg very unfortable the room so I would be fortable. I sperately wanted this."</p><p data-no-id="72" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">The dn took place the office of John Levey, the stg director at Warner Brothers. Sork was there, too, along wh one of the show's other executive producers, Thomas Schlamme, who directed the famo live episo of ER and was Sork's llaborator on Sports Night. Sork was the only one who'd already ma up his md. To the others, my brother was not exactly a stranger--they remembered him pecially om an Emmy-wng 1995 episo of ER, filmed at Warner Brothers, which he'd played a young father whose wife di childbirth--but, ankly, he was jt another name on the list.</p><p data-no-id="74" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">My brother ed all the tricks experience had tght him. He polely cut short the small talk at the begng ("Can I act now?"). He turned to leave immediately after he was fished so as not to seem like a "needy actor." And though the l by this pot were all but wrten on his heart, he did the entire scene holdg the pag his hand, ocsnally glancg down at them, hopg to imply, "This is where I am now. I n go farther." </p><p data-no-id="76" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">He nailed ; they lghed out loud. When my brother was on the way out the door, Levey's assistant whispered his ear, "Nobody has done like that! Wow! Wow!" When he got home, there was a msage on his answerg mache om Sork: "You h out of the park." </p><p data-no-id="78" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">And then . . . nothg. Jt weeks and weeks of silence. As turns out, Levey wasn't persuad that my brother had the sex appeal to play a leadg man on work televisn. Schlamme wasn't sure he had enough pth to rry off the scen he knew Sork would eventually have to wre if The Wt Wg were ever gog to be more than a simple romantic edy. "There's a place that he don't sometim go his wrg," says Schlamme, who viewed his role partly as nudgg Sork that directn. "It's not about naked people fuckg. It's about gog to a place that is a man absolutely standg toe-to-toe wh a woman, gettg his heart broken if that's what's gog to happen, and alg wh the sexual energy of a relatnship. I knew that Brad had the ic timg. But my experience as a director, people wh credible ic timg sometim have a very hard time gog to that place I jt scribed. Bee edy is the flectn of havg to be revealed, havg to be hurt."</p><p data-no-id="80" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">My brother might have had somethg to say to Levey's and Schlamme's ncerns if he knew what they were, but he didn't. All he knew was that they were standg his way. Reluctantly, he agreed to a send dn ont of Levey and The Wt Wg's John Wells, probably the most powerful producer televisn (ER, Third Watch), this time wh Moira Kelly, whose character, Mandy, was origally nceived as Josh's love tert. It did not go well. Afterward, Levey told Brad's agent, Ana Chawke, that her client had "reced" Kelly's prence.</p><p data-no-id="82" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">"I don't unrstand," Chawke said.</p><p data-no-id="84" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">"What part of my English don't you unrstand? It's not gog to happen for Brad." </p><p data-no-id="86" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">Meanwhile, was gettg to be pilot season. Other people were llg. Fox was terted him for an hourlong dramedy. "They wanted to pay me a lot of money," Brad says. "A lot more [than Wt Wg]. And if I wanted to do , I uld have done . None of this bullsh of jumpg through Tommy fuckg Schlamme's hoops, you know? At this pot, I'm fur at him. It's like, I know, I know, I know I n play this role! You feel like a crazy person an asylum tryg to nvce the orrly that you're sane. 'I know this is ridiculo bee I'm an actor tryg to get a part, and, of urse, this part would be great for me, but serly, I am really built for this!' "</p><p data-no-id="88" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">It me down to the Friday before productn was to beg. Chawke lled my brother. Good news: He's been offered a part on The Wt Wg. Bad news: It's Sam, not Josh. "I was jt, Nooooo. No, no, no, no," Brad says. "So I lled Aaron. You don't know if you're gog to be articulate or pathetic. I hontly did not know. And I jt said, 'Aaron, I jt feel this very strongly. This isn't about me wantg a job. This is the only time my life I will play this rd. I am this guy; I am not the other guy.' And Aaron's pot is, 'Don't worry about what you do the pilot,' and I was sayg, 'No, no, no. There is a difference. There is a difference startg wh the pilot. Josh isn't sexual-high-jks boy. Josh is, You know what? I had to tell the fuckg Christian Right off! Bee 's ridiculo! And I lost ntrol!' "</p><p data-no-id="90" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">Sork was imprsed. ("That's sort of when we knew, Gee, we really do have a good marriage here.") Sometime over the weekend, Rob Lowe got what he was askg for, cludg first billg and a lot more money than anyone else the st except Mart Sheen. Which meant Lowe uld play Sam and Brad uld play Josh.</p><p data-no-id="92" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">"And then was very funny," my brother says, "bee I go to the read-through and we're readg the pilot, and Rob's readg Sam, and I'm thkg, 'That's a much better part the pilot.' You know, he's gettg big lghs, all that hooker stuff and everythg, and I'm, like, tellg off the Christian Right. But I'm so happy 's this part."</p><p data-no-id="94" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">The print and his senr staff are stg around a large oval nference table beneath a chanlier the make-believe Roosevelt Room. All except the chief of staff--John Spencer is off dog a play tonight. ("Gettg enough actg the days, John?" my brother teased, as Spencer was leavg.) Each has a py of this week's script, Sork's thirty-seventh sce the pilot, a stack of paper half an ch thick, about ten thoand words (cludg stage directns), the ver emblazoned wh the printial seal. "I've taken another whack at this," Sork says, llg this week's read-through to orr late on a Friday afternoon. They read at hyperspeed, stumblg ocsnally (who knew that Print Bartlet wouldn't know how to pronounce Yemen?), lghg like an dience at their own jok, then snappg back to character, managg--whout lights, mic, props, or even stg up straight--to make the story so pellg that when 's over, they n't help themselv, they appld: for Sork, I'm sure that's the ia, but I thk also for themselv.</p><p data-no-id="96" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">Afterward, I walk wh my brother to his trailer, but we don't go si yet. It's a geo wter eveng, the green hills across the road gog black the fadg light, the clouds on the horizon blazg a fiery pk, a glow scendg on this ltle rner of Burbank like a cloud of grace. Jefey Saco, aka the Hair Fairy, wanrs over om the makp trailer to wish my brother good luck at the Goln Glob on Sunday. (It was Brad who me up wh that nickname, jt blurted out one day to the horror of everyone, apparently, but the Hair Fairy himself.) Later Sheen stops by to miserate wh a kdred soul about the guratn tomorrow--the real one Washgton. Both he and my brother mpaigned hard for Al Gore. "They'll be playg 'Hail to the Thief!' " Sheen fairly yelps.</p><p data-no-id="98" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">I'm jt watchg, thkg about other scen I've wnsed on the set durg this vis: My brother and Dulé Hill playg tch wh a medice ball outsi the Oval Office. My brother and Allison Janney tradg arias om A Funny Thg Happened on the Way to the Fom, jt bee they happen to be the same room together. (How do they know the thgs?) My brother greetg nearly every woman he meets the urse of his day, st or crew, wh a kiss on the lips. I remember his sayg he don't like watchg himself on film, even the good rol, that he fds "totally unnervg." I pletely unrstand. I fd unnervg watchg him, too. But I'm gettg ed to . That's Bradley Whford, I'm begng to realize. That's my brother. And once aga he tch my eye.
