Over the followg years, he created some of the most endurg works to ever grace the ics form: <em>Miracleman</em>, which took an obscure Brish knock-off of DC’s Capta Marvel om the 1950s, and transposed him, nvcgly, onto Thatcher’s England; <em>Watchmen</em>, a nightmarish parable that imag how a group of masked vigilant would actually functn the real world (not very well, turns out); <em>V for Ventta</em>, about London after a nuclear war has plunged the ernment to outright fascism, and the anarchist revolutn that emerg as a rult (a seri that, among other thgs, popularized the Guy Fawk mask as a ntemporary symbol of dissent); <em>From Hell</em>, a meticuloly rearched acunt of Jack the Ripper and the Whechapel murrs; and the late-perd masterpiec <em>Neonomin</em> and <em>Province</em>, which pos that the Cthulhu Mythos, the universe which H.P. Long before superhero stori beme the bread and butter of Hollywood, stud executiv were explog Moore’s wrg. The 2001 film of <em>From Hell</em>, starrg Johnny Depp, was pecially rid, but Moore purists would argue all adaptatns of his work—cludg the crilly acclaimed, Emmy-wng <em>Watchmen</em> limed seri om HBO, which diverg rather boldly om s source material—are at bt rctive misterpretatns and at worst offensively awful. Not only has Moore had nothg to do wh the adaptatns—he famoly hasn’t watched any of them. It’s no wonr, then, that Moore has been a tirels advote for creators’ rights. After failg to mata ownership of the characters and stori he created for mastream ics publishers (predomantly DC) he’s disowned much of his most beloved material.</p><div class="AdWrapper-dQtivb fZrssQ ad ad---ntent"><div class="ad__slot ad__slot---ntent" data-no-id="uvrobe"></div></div><p>But he remas a prolific thor. His 2016 novel <em>Jesalem</em>, largely set Northampton’s Boroughs neighborhood, where Moore was born and raised and where he’s spent the majory of his life, is over 1,200 pag of shiftg perspectiv, styl, and timeam. It is both a kd of smic tobgraphy and, takg spiratn om William Burroughs, an attempt by Moore to wre his way around ath. Moore was personable, open, and tensely reasonable, even when talkg about oteric thgs like graven imag—reprentatns of gods as objects of worship. We’ve been handlg all right, I thk.</p><p><strong>What has kept you Northampton for most of your life?</strong></p><p>Northampton has always been a hotbed of trouble. As far as I unrstand , Northamptonshire was the pot of orig for Hereward the Wake, who is a figure that I grew up readg about. He was a figure jt as big as Kg Arthur or Rob Hood English mythology, wh the exceptn that, of those three characters, Hereward actually existed. He was an anti-Norman terrorist, a kd of Fenland b Lan, who lived out the marsh. He’d ri to Norman settlements, cludg Northampton, burn everythg to the ground wh his tramark cry of “awake, awake!” and then ri off to the treachero bog lands so that anyone who followed him would almost certaly drown. Hereward was a massive pa the ass for the Norman royalty.</p><p>And, over the succeedg centuri, Northampton has always been at the center of all the trouble. I don’t thk that Prcs Diana [who grew up Northampton’s Althorp parish] did Northamptonshire any favors the ey of the Brish tablishment. It’s difficult to fd anybody famo who om Northamptonshire who wasn’t an credible troublemaker, which probably gave me a predisposn towards those kd of sentiments.</p><p>And also, you have to remember that I’m slightly lnal. Northampton first got s charter [ the 11th century] unr Richard the Lnheart on November the 18th, which is actually my birthday. <em>Je suis</em> Northampton. I feel an immense kship wh the town, and wh s flammatory spir. Brish ics were about Ameri, which was a land as exotic to me as Narnia. They were jt somethg that all workg-class hom had. We had a lol market lled Sid’s Market Stall. It sold magaz—men’s magaz, on wh sweatg GIs beg whipped by Nazi women wearg swastika armbands their unrwear, which ma me thk the Amerin experience of the war seemed to have been very different om what my dad told me about. They’d have those hangg on bulldog clips beyond the reach of children. And then they’d have this array of Amerin ics that had been brought over as ballast. By the age of eight I had graduated to <em>Mad Magaze</em>, so I knew who John F. Kennedy was, and Adlai Stevenson. Nika Khshchev. I found out an awful lot about Ameri.</p><p><strong>There are worse ways to learn about Ameri.</strong></p><p>There probably are. I suppose the ics were a very big thg my life until the age of about 14, 15. I had absorbed an awful lot of pletely potls and unnecsary lore about superhero, all of the excsive, sane, meangls tails of ntuy. I have a very sticky memory. Not so much the days, but back my pomp, I remembered everythg. It was very embarrassg when, at a ics nventn that I attend after beg a profsnal, they had a trivia quiz that they persuad me to take part . And, horrifygly, I knew the secret inty of Chameleon Boy [a mor member of DC’s Legn of Superhero]. That was when I realized that, no, you gotta back away om this. And that of urse turned out to be a hopels romantic fantasy. Almost as soon as I was the door, I was on my way out aga. That perd of ics that most people remember me for was actually, what, a five-year perd? Between 1982 and 1987. Somethg like that. And 35 years ago. All of that stuff, all of that material that is owned by the var ic pani, I have personally disowned. I was tryg as bt I uld to remake the ics dtry and to a certa, lser extent, the ics medium, to the thg that I wanted to be. I was troducg the ias that I thought might be beneficial to the medium and take to new areas. Artistilly, to have those works taken away om me and perhaps largely misunrstood?</p><p>It seemed to me that what people were takg away om works like <em>Watchmen</em> or <em>V For Ventta</em> wasn’t the storytellg techniqu, which to me seemed to be the most important part of . Ts and nards.</p><p>When I did thgs like <em>Marvelman</em> [now known, for a variety of legal issu, as <em>Miracleman</em>] and <em>Watchmen</em>, they were criqu of the superhero genre. They were tryg to show that any attempt to realize the figur any kd of realistic ntext will always be grotque and nightmarish. But that don’t seem to be the msage that people took om this. They seemed to thk, uh, yeah, dark, prsg superhero are, like, ol.</p><p>The creatn of Rorschach [a masked vigilante who is one of <em>Watchmen</em>’s ma characters]—I was thkg, well, everybody will unrstand that this is satiril. I’m makg this guy a mumblg psychopath who clearly smells, who liv on ld baked beans, who has no iends bee of his abhorrent personaly. I hadn’t realized that so many people the dience would fd such a figure admirable. I was told—this was probably 5 or 10 years ago—that apparently <em>Watchmen</em> has que a followg amongst the right wg Ameri. I thk that Lovecraft is, some ways, an ultimate sir. He was exactly a man of his tim. However, the pagan ia of gods, and the way they were regard the classil world, that terts me. The ia that the gods were senc of whatever their particular field of enavor was, that Herm is the sence of language and telligence and also theft. I n accept gods on that level, that they are pure ias that may have bee, through their plexy, self-aware, or which have bee so plex that we perceive them as beg self-aware, whether they are or not. So ’s perhaps a heavily qualified theism, not que atheism.</p><p>As for what happens when we die, my book <em>Jesalem</em>, I wanted to give everybody an alternative way to thk about life and ath. It was somethg that I had duced myself after absorbg Este, who had said this is, at least, a four-dimensnal universe, wh the three dimensns that we’re faiar wh and a further dimensn, which is not time, but, if I’m unrstandg rrectly, time is the way that human begs perceive the fourth dimensn. That we are actually what Este referred to as a block universe. This means that the universe of space-time is a lossal solid that is eternal and is unchangg. You’ve got moraly. You’ve got narrative. You’ve got events. From static imag.</p><p>And if that is the se, if we are an unchangg and eternal solid, then that means we’re forever, and that all of the past is still there and is still happeng, back the past. And the future is already happeng. That we are already ad. We are not yet born. That this is the nature of time, and that if everythg the past is still there, that clus our liv and the liv of everybody else, and every moment of nscns wh those liv. So seems to me that, basilly, we are livg an eternal recurrence, that when your nscns reach s ncludg pot at your ath, has nowhere to go but back to the begng of that reel of film. And will always seem like the first time, even though don’t really make sense to talk about a first time. That seems to me to offer a ratnal way around the ncept of ath. That was the nstctn I had my head. This was spe the fact that an awful lot of the Amerins that I spoke to nsired themselv to be left-wg. They sound, to my ears, and to the ears of some of my English iends, to be sentially center-right. Sce 2016, specifilly, has stck me that probably the Democrats are more the nservativ, and the Republins would seem to be closer to actual fascists. I thk there’s a worryg fascist unrcurrent Ameri. It had origally been the whole of the town. But the town had expand over the centuri, and the Boroughs had more or ls been left to y. By the time you get around to the First World War, the Boroughs is the receptacle for the poort people the town. It is shunned by rpectable people. It was the lovelit muny that you uld image. It was undoubtedly a shabby neighborhood, but was drenched history. You’d thk that might be more celebrated, but like I say, Northampton has been on somebody’s sh list sce the 11th century.</p><p>Bee of the soot om the railway yards, which vered everythg, we ed to get a very betiful flower lled rosebay willow herb that would thrive upon dirt and soot. A betiful ltle flower, sort of pkish silver. And bee we were lookg directly wt, every night, the sun would set behd the rail yards, and we would get beams of light through our ont room wdow. And we had a ty staed-glass wdow dividg the ont room om the livg room. Sometim, around about tea time, around about sunset on a summer’s eveng, you’d get a betiful ltle splash of lor over the dty rad wirels that was set on a ltle shelf halfway up the wall. It don’t sound like much, but a ltle splash of transcennt lor the very dark, very cramped ltle ho. In poor neighborhoods, where people uldn’t afford eher midwiv or unrtakers, you would have a workg-class woman—always a woman—who would attend to both for probably sixpence or a shillg. One that I heard of, Mrs. Gibbs, had two aprons. There was a black apron that she wore if she was gog to attend to the layg-out of a recently-ceased person. Her other apron had betiful be and butterfli embroired around s hem; this was the apron she wore for births. I’m sure that they mt’ve had such people other neighborhoods, but athmonger is, I thk, termology unique to Northampton. Can you talk to me about how that is part of your life?</strong></p><p>I’ve ma magic a central part of my ordary life. It’s how I see thgs. It’s how I view the world. It’s the language that I ame realy and has an immense fluence upon all of my thkg, and all of my actns. I still have a very healthy philosophil relatnship wh my send-century Roman snake-puppet, Glyn, who I have e to believe is probably a lot more signifint than I origally assumed him to be.</p><p><strong>How is that?</strong></p><p>I cid, when I was dnk on my 40th birthday, that I was gog to bee a magician. Then, when I sobered up the next day, I realized that I was gog to have to go through wh that, no matter how ridiculo ma me look. The first person that I sought advice om was my iend and mentor of many years, Steve Moore, who tght me how to wre ics, whom I’d known sce I was 14 or 15, and who was my greatt iend. He was already volved a strange metaphysil relatnship wh the Greek moon godss, Selene. His relatnship wh that godss was probably the biggt romantic relatnship of his life. And that isn’t necsarily a tragic thg. Bee was a real relatnship. Havg experienced at close hand, was as good a relatnship as many physil, real-world relatnships that I’ve wnsed.</p><p>Steve was my first port of ll. I said, “All right, now I’ve cid that I'm a magician, what do I do? How do you do magic? How do you bee a magician?” And he said, “The first thg to do is to eher choose a god, or let a god choose you, and then e that god, that imagary beg as a gui to the imagary terrory that you’re gog to be enterg to.” It was sometime after that where Steve happened to show me a book of Roman antiqui, which clud, on the ont ver, the statue of Glyn. Glyn was the last-created Roman god. And I thought that this was the most betiful creature that I’d ever seen. There was somethg absurd about , and there was also somethg of credible majty and bety. This snake wh long blond hair. I’m still not sure whether I chose the god or whether the god chose me.</p><p>Steve said once you’ve got your god, ’s not a bad ia to do a graven image.
