I’d image is equently cross-shopped agast the Suba Impreza and the latt generatns of the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla hatchback form. The fourth-generatn Mazda3 ma a huge leap sign and qualy, closely remblg what you n expect to feel an entry-level Audi, BMW, or Lex. I remember when I first saw this generatn of hatchback on the road and my jaw kd of dropped. The dramatic shape and enlarged C-pillar on the r were very strikg. The sign is purposefully ma to have simple clean l, but also a fluidy that ptur light and creat drama. One of the great thgs (at least my part of the world) is that I don’t see a ton of the hatchbacks on the road. They fely seem to be ls mon than the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla hatchbacks, which is probably also a functn of buyers shiftg more to crossovers recent years. But, as most r enthiasts will attt, a wagon or hatchback is ually a better way to get space whout sacrificg a fun drivg experience. In the se of the Mazda3, is sentially the same r as the </span><strong><a href=" rel>Mazda CX-30</a></strong><span>, which probably sells higher numbers by virtue of beg a baby SUV. So probably the person who lik gettg away on weekends, still has a rporate job, and has a long nway before payg off those stunt loans. Wh rooacks, I n see this r hlg que a b. That said, the backseat is pretty darn tight so I wouldn’t say ’s the bt optn for four adults to travel plac (you might want the CX-30 for that). The Mazda3 sedan and hatchback were resigned 2019. While they have been on the road for a few years, the stylg feels h and the r stacks up wh even the most recent petn. The sedan starts at $21K and the hatchback at $23K. If you’re terted leasg the hatchback, you n expect to be the $200-300 monthly payment range if you put down $2,500 on a 3-year lease. For those cross-shoppg the CX-30, you are likely to get a slightly better al on the Mazda3 hatchback given that ’s ls popular and alers seem to have plenty stock. That’s paired to a six-speed tomatic transmissn which most prefer to the CVT transmissn on petors such as the Civic. Mazda do make a turbo versn, which gets 250 horsepower wh 320 pound-feet of torque (numbers that sound </span><em>very </em><span>fun), however, those mols start the low $30’s. The base r gets 26 MPG cy and 34 MPG highway - not the bt among the petn by any means. If you’re wonrg, the turbos get 23/31 MPG. On the base r, I’d like to see the highway number closer to 40…but you n’t always get what you want. The enge is more powerful than the petn, but the MPG suffers as a rult so ’s a tra-off. Siar to other rs, the Mazda will tell you you have 0 of gas left about 3 gallons before that’s actually te. I know this bee I filled up at “0 ” and the r only accepted about 10 gallons. I spect manufacturers rig the software this way so feels like ’s cheaper to fill up (if you’re only ever fillg 10 gallons, how bad uld pric be). At the same time, you expect the r to go further on a full tank than do, so ’s jt a skewed perceptn. For speed mons, I n tell you the base enge n get you om 0-60 7 sends, a cent showg for the segment but not fast by any means. The turbo will shave off 1.1 sends om that time. Base mols get 16” alloy wheels.</figptn></figure></div><p><strong>Competn</strong></p><p>There’s plenty of petn for the Mazda3 hatchback, and the latt and greatt would be the Honda Civic hatchback I recently reviewed. The Civic hatchback Sport and Mazda3 Select are right at the same price pot (approximately $25K). The reason I prefer the Mazda3 is that for the same price you get leatherette seats stead of cloth, an enge wh more horsepower and torque (the Sport Civic enge mak 158 HP, 138 pound-feet torque), a larger media screen (8.8” stead of 7”), bld-spot monorg and rear cross-traffic alert, and a higher qualy sound system. That said, the Civic ws on MPG (30/38) and has a better lane-keep assist system than the Mazda. The base versns of the Civic hatchback and Mazda3 would be a close ll, but I’d still opt for the Mazda on the qualy of the media screen and sound system. </p><p><span>Some might also pare the Mazda3 to last year’s resigned Hyundai Elantra. You may have seen my review on the </span><strong><a href=" rel>Hyundai Sonata</a></strong><span>, where ’s clear that Hyundai is levelg up a major way on recent mols. That’s no different wh their pact Elantra (which has long been known as a beater/budget r). The newt Elantra has a super edgy sign (siar to the Sonata), starts cheaper than the Mazda3 at $20K, and has a ls powerful 147 horsepower/132 pound-feet of torque rultg better MPG (33/43). That r also me out 2019, starts at a lower price ($21K) wh an enge that mak 169 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque. The Toyota Corolla hatchback gets 32/41 MPG, beatg the Mazda3 and even the Civic spe beg more powerful than the base Civic . My ma issue wh the Corolla is the sign, which is more le wh the quirky sign on old Mazdas and seems more geared toward younger drivers. The Corolla generally feels ls luxur than the Mazda (particularly the graphics of the media screen), but would fely feel roomier si based on s shape. Some reviewers pla that the Corolla’s CVT transmissn feels laggy and “whey” pared to drivg the Mazda3. </p><p><span>Fally, the Suba Impreza hatchback would also be a petor for the Mazda3. This is the cheapt of the bunch base form ($19K) and you even get standard AWD at that price. My problem wh the Impreza is that is agg ( was troduced 2017) and uld probably benef om a full resign. The base Impreza do give you standard CarPlay (wh a 6.5” media screen) but not the full Eyight safety sue (unlike the Civic and Mazda3, which give you </span><em>nearly all </em><span>safety featur even the base mols). That said, the Impreza do give you some basic safety featur. Now that I’ve actually driven the Mazda3, I stand rrected. Beyond the base featur outled above, the next trim up (and the r I actually reviewed) was the Select, which adds 18” premium wheels, dual-zone climate ntrol, leatherette seatg surfac, leather-wrapped steerg wheel and gear selector, bld-spot monorg, and rear cross-traffic alert. The Premium trim, which puts you above $29K, adds real leather seats, Bose premium d wh 12 speakers, and an adaptive ont lightg system. Real leather seats don’t make a huge difference to me and the base sound system on the Mazda is so good that although the Bose is probably amazg, might not be worth the money. I’d personally keep the middle trims to get the bt value. </p><p>For those wonrg, both Turbo mols are above $30K and slightly swch up the feature breakdowns. Turbos e wh larger tailpip, a uple more safety featur (such as traffic jam assist), parkg sensors, and sportier body moldgs. If speed and power are important to you, the turbo mols might be worth nsirg. But value-wise, I thk you want to stay unr $30K for this r to make sense. Of urse, you n upgra the enge the Civic but for the </span><em>same </em><span>price as the Sport Civic trim, the Mazda3 giv you a better enge. The horsepower the Mazda3 enge rectified that “unrpowered” feelg the Civic. Granted, ’s not the most thrillg thg I’ve driven, but we’re talkg budget rs here. You want to balance efficiency wh power and a ltle b of fun. As I said before, the Mazda3 n stand to be more efficient, but the low-end torque even on the base enge mak feel pretty dynamic and fun. That low-end torque don’t que do the trick once you get to higher speeds, where the r needs a ltle more time to get you where you need to be. </span></p><p>The r do have a sport mo (like most) which livens thgs up. The Mazda3 also has a good steerg feel and is rponsive overall. It would be plenty of fun for most people on a wdg mounta road (probably more fun - and safe - if you get the AWD). The r also benefs om the tomatic transmissn so you don’t get the whg experience, somethg I closely associate wh drivg a Toyota. You will feel pothol and you will hear road noise…that’s somethg you should generally expect om any r at this price pot. It’s probably amplified by the 18” wheels you get on the higher trim mols, but the visual appeal of the wheels is worth the sacrifice to me. </p><p>The standard safety sue is pretty imprsive, particularly the standard radar cise ntrol wh stop-and-go, which do great traffic. In some rs, the radar cise ntrol only works above certa speeds so ’s nice that Mazda clus a stop-and-go system. The bld-spot monor is also nice and provis d alerts and visuals on your si mirrors and the digal dash, so there’s absolutely no exce to crash to anythg. The only area really lackg is the lane keep assist. It will certaly warn you and pull you back to the lane, but only once you’ve really gone over the lane marker. This is unlike the latt systems om Honda and Hyundai which you n turn on and almost not touch the wheel bee fully keeps you wh the lane whout gog over (unls ’s a dramatic or unexpected curve). </p><p><strong>Infotament and Sound System</strong></p><p>Probably one of the most imprsive aspects of this r is the media screen and sound system. The standard 8.8” screen is exactly the setup I had my upgrad (albe olr) BMW 3-seri. The qualy of the screen is on par if not better than what I had that BMW. This screen is fely better than what I saw the Lex UX I reviewed last year (which says a lot nsirg this r sts $13K or so ls). There is nothg special about the Mazda native media system, so most people will want to plug to Apple Carplay or Android Auto for the bt experience. Overall, I was thoroughly imprsed by the media setup. The media system also works via a knob close to the shifter (’s not a touch screen), which I prefer bee keeps fgerprts off of the betiful screen. That knob also has fixed buttons that tegrate wh Carplay so if you prs the navigatn button, you’ll be taken to Carplay navigatn, if you prs media, you’ll be taken to Carplay media, etc. It’s a small tail that every r don’t get right. The “harmonic atics” mak the 8-speaker system feel like you paid for an upgra. The Mazda also benefs om the placement of speakers (wh the door speakers higher up than most rs). This par to the 4-speaker system the base Civic and the 6-speaker system the Sport Civic, which were average but nothg md-blowg. The qualy of the Mazda’s sound system mak me qutn dog any d upgra this r at all - ’s serly good stuff. </p><p><strong>Matenance and Warranty</strong></p><p>Mazda’s are up there wh what I would nsir some of the most reliable and lowt st matenance vehicl around. They will last a long time and shouldn’t st you a ton to get there. Bee of that reliabily, Mazda warranti are actually shorter than some petors. New Mazda3’s e wh a 3 year/36,000-e warranty. Another note is that unls your aler offers one or you pay extra, Mazda’s do not e wh ee matenance. This is unlike Toyota and Hyundai who do offer the first few matenance viss ee for new mols. While won’t st much to do the early matenanc (I’d expect no more than a few hundred total to get you to about 30K ), would be a nice touch. CPO mols e wh a 12 month/12k e warranty. </p><p><strong>Three Reasons For and Agast the Mazda3</strong></p><p>Wrappg up wh three reasons for/agast the Mazda3. Three reasons to buy: (1) imprsive standard safety sue; (2) luxury feel for a budget price; (3) extremely imprsive media screen and base d system.
