The first openly gay club Bristol was lled Moul Rouge. Those who remember say there were highly examg door staff who wouldn’t perm entry to those that didn’t seem gay. Bristol was home to an early gay-rights’ activist.

A Problem Greek Ethics (1883) and A Problem Morn Ethics (1891) argued for a ratnal approach to homosexualy and law reforms.

Symonds -wrote the revolutnary book, Sexual Inversn (1897) – a textbook on homosexualy that characteriz as neher rpt nor the effect of mental illns. Radnor Hotel was Bristol’s first gay pub. It’s now known as the Radnor Rooms, but 30 St Nicholas Street was a gay pub om the early 1940s.

On 1st July 1972, 700 Lbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and queer people took to the streets of London to bat the forced visibily faced by queer people; beg out and proud was not seen as the norm society at this time, whereas today, is much more mon for LGBTQIA+ people to be open about their te selv.

Peggy Hanck, a longtime iend and ally of Bristol’s gay muny, sadly passed away on December 28th 2021 at the age of 98.

Peggy was born Hotwells 1923, and at age fifteen a chance vis to the Radnor Hotel- Bristol’s earlit known gay pub- set her on the path towards a lifetime of iendship wh Bristol’s gay muny.

For many years Peggy would travel to Palm Sprgs every year wh gay iends a pilgrimage of sorts. Peggy’s stori of Bristol’s gay scene durg the 50’s and 60’s formed a valuable part of the rearch for M Shed and OutStori Bristol’s Revealg Stori exhibn 2013.

Well to her neti Peggy would attend the weekly GayWt ffee shop, where she was notor for her outrageo stori of her long and lourful life.
