Ltle did they know, would bee a classic of s own—for a very different reason.</p><p>“Comg Home” opens wh a taxi droppg a young man off outsi a snow-vered hoe becked Christmas ratns early one morng. A young woman excedly opens the door and tablish that she’s his sister by potg at herself and sayg “sister!” He’s weary, havg jt returned om volunteerg “Wt Ai,” and the two share a cup of hly-brewed Folgers ffee while their parents are still asleep. (In some versns he even says "ah, <em>real</em> ffee," as if he didn't jt e om where some of the bt ffee the world is produced.) He hands her a small prent, but stead of openg , she peels off the red bow and sticks on his shirt. “What are you dog?” he asks. “You’re my prent this year,” she rponds. The mera zooms on her shy glance, then cuts to his furtive, flirty se. The reactn to the ad was an example of the ter at s most fun—the phenomenon of llectively realizg that the specific thg that you believed you’ve sgularly noticed is actually a wily-held opn. Mem, articl, and parody vios abound. It was kd of his personal story. His son had been the Peace Corps and had done work out of the untry and had e home for Christmas. It’s not somethg I have a lot of memori about, outsi of the fact that ultimately the mercial kd of seems like the brother and sister are gog to have sex. He home and his sister has gone om a very young girl to a young teenager. And obvly you st them so they look like they’re brother and sister.</p><p><strong>Timothy Simons:</strong> I suppose, had I thought at the time, “this is gog to be a 10-year <a href=">ct</a> joke,” I would’ve ma some more mental not. But [durg stg] I was jt tryg to get through the day. I was tryg to see 200 people who had all driven to Santa Moni when they didn’t want to drive to Santa Moni to pretend to be rned wh their brother.</p><p><em>The role of the brother went to Matthew Alan, who has sce gone on to star the seri</em> <a href=">Castle Rock</a> <em>and</em> 13 Reasons Why. <em>Cathere Combs, who played the sister, cled to be terviewed for this article.</em></p><p><strong>Ray Dillman:</strong> I got a project years ago for the Profsnal Golfers Associatn and there was a set of words you don't like to hear as a director: "Oh yeah, and 's gog to be non-unn talent." But you do fd good people, and Matthew was one of those people. He hadn't done anythg and I st him. He was so good and so genue and so sweet, jt had that sweetns about him that was perfect for the spot. To me was very personal, very special bee was the begng of my reer and one of the first jobs that I had the pleasure of bookg.</p><p><strong>Timothy Simons:</strong> They didn’t dn together but I remember both of their performanc beg the bt performanc that anybody saw that day. Especially the young woman—she had credible energy the room. Jt a really lovely person, a really strong actor.</p><p><strong>Matthew Alan:</strong> We met the very first day on set, and she was really lovely to work wh. We haven't crossed paths sce, so I'd be cur to see where she's at and how she's dog now.</p><p><strong>Ray Dillman:</strong> She, first of all, took serly, but jt had somethg that I felt would match Matthew. She had somethg special and did really good thgs wh whatever adjtment I asked her to do.</p><p><strong>Matthew Alan:</strong> It was a full day, probably a 12-hour day. I remember pullg up to this neighborhood Santa Moni, five mut om the beach, and wonrg how they're gog to make this hoe look so Christmas-y.
