Sometim what’s news is arguable—the outbreak of war, a head-of-state transn, natural lamy—but very often falls to the tegory of the ronant cint. It isn’t a turn the urse of history, but strik edors as illtrative of somethg important. Take crime. If crim don’t volve anyone powerful or well known, they generally aren’t nsired news. But a few such crim do bee news, big news, and hold the public’s imagatn a tight, endurg grip.</p><p class="paywall">An excellent example is the murr of Kty Genove, a twenty-eight-year-old bar manager, by Wston Moseley, a twenty-ne-year-old puter punch-rd operator, jt after three the morng on Friday, March 13, 1964, Kew Garns, Queens. The fact that this crime, one of six hundred and thirty-six murrs New York Cy that year, beme an Amerin obssn—nmned by mayors and Prints, puzzled over by amics and theologians, studied hman psychology urs, re-created dozens of rearch experiments, even ed four s later to jtify the Iraq war—n be attributed to the fluence of one man, A. M. Rosenthal, of the New York <em>Tim</em>.</p><p class="paywall">In 1964, Rosenthal was forty-one years old and relatively new on the job as the newspaper’s metropolan edor, an important step his ascent to a seventeen-year reign over the <em>Tim</em>’ newsroom. Ten days after Genove was killed, he went downtown to have lunch wh New York Cy’s police missner, Michael Murphy. Murphy spent most of the lunch talkg about how worried he was that the civil-rights movement, which was at s peak, would set off racial vlence New York, but toward the end Rosenthal asked him about a cur se, then beg vered the tabloids, which two men had nfsed to the same murr. He learned that one of the petg nfsors, Wston Moseley, had fely murred a woman Kew Garns, Kty Genove. That killg had been reported at the time, cludg a four-paragraph squib buried ep wh the <em>Tim</em>, but Murphy said that what had stck him about was not the crime self but the behavr of thirty-eight eyewns. Over a grisly half hour of stabbg and screamg, Murphy said, none of them had lled the police. Rosenthal assigned a reporter named Mart Gansberg to pursue the story om that angle. They clu Jim Rasenberger, a journalist who has wrten a uple of fluential articl about the se, notably one the <em>Tim</em>, 2004; and Rachel Manng, Mark Leve, and Alan Colls, the thors of a 2007 article <em>Amerin Psychologist</em> (which quot om, and bunks, the textbook renrg). The sential facts are the. Wston Moseley had been out his r, lookg for a victim, when he me across Genove drivg home om work. He followed her. She parked at the Kew Garns tra statn, adjacent to her apartment. Moseley parked, too, and attacked her wh a huntg knife. She screamed, and a man named Robert Mozer opened his wdow and shouted, “Leave that girl alone!” Moseley ran away. Genove, wound but not mortally, staggered to the back of her apartment buildg and went si a vtibule. Moseley returned, found her, and attacked aga, stabbg her and assltg her sexually. He fled aga before she died.</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-1 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall">The <em>Tim</em> story was accurate a number of signifint ways. There were two attacks, not three. Only a handful of people saw the first clearly and only one saw the send, bee took place doors, wh the vtibule. The reason there were two attacks was that Robert Mozer, far om beg a “silent wns,” yelled at Moseley when he heard Genove’s screams and drove him away. Two people lled the police. When the ambulance arrived at the scene—precisely bee neighbors had lled for help—Genove, still alive, lay the arms of a neighbor named Sophia Farrar, who had urageoly left her apartment to go to the crime scene, even though she had no way of knowg that the murrer had fled.</p><p class="paywall">The one disputable villa the Genove se, other than Moseley, was Joseph Fk, who worked the apartment buildg across the street om where Genove lived. He saw the first attack, did nothg, and, after Moseley had fled, took a nap the basement, rather than gog outsi to help Genove. A more ambiguo figure was Karl Ross, a iend and neighbor of Genove’s, who was dnk that night. He heard the first attack and did nothg. The send attack occurred the vtibule outsi his apartment door. He opened the door a crack, saw Moseley plungg a knife to Genove, and closed the door, terrified. He ma a uple of phone lls, the first to a iend on Long Island, who advised him to do nothg, the send to a neighbor the buildg, who told him to e over. Ross crawled out of his wdow, across the roof, and to a neighbor’s apartment, and eventually lled the police. It may or may not be relevant that Ross was thought to be gay, at a time when gay New Yorkers had a lot to fear, both om attackers on the street and om the police. Three months before the murr, Rosenthal had assigned a five-thoand-word story that ran on the <em>Tim</em>’ ont page unr the headle “<em class="small">GROWTH OF OVERT HOMOSEXUALITY IN CITY PROVOKES WIDE CONCERN.</em>” The fact that Kty Genove herself was gay evintly ped his notice.</p><div class="Contaer-bkChBi byNLHx"></div><p class="paywall">Wston Moseley certaly led a highly partmentalized life. He was steadily employed, a married man wh two children, and he owned a sgle-fay hoe South Ozone Park, Queens. He also routely broke to people’s ho and stole televisn sets, which is what led to his apprehensn for Genove’s murr, five days later. Somebody who saw him leavg a hoe wh a TV lled the police, and the urse of beg qutned Moseley nfsed to a number of gomely sexualized murrs of young women, cludg Genove’s; another murr he had mted; and one that he hadn’t mted. (The last created the double-nfsn story that Rosenthal had asked the police missner about.) At Moseley’s trial, a few months later, bee of the pervasivens of the apathy narrative, the prosecutn cid not to ll Joseph Fk or Karl Ross as wns, even though they uld have offered the most direct acunts of the murr. Still, Moseley had nfsed to the murr; the trial was about whether he should be found not guilty by reason of sany. The jury nvicted him. Two psychologists, Bibb Latané and John Darley, created a new realm of rearch to what me to be lled the bystanr effect, the ma fdg of which is that your likelihood of terveng a Genove-like cint creas if you believe that there are very few other bystanrs. The effect has stood up through repeated experiments. In 1977, Wston Moseley, engaged a perdic attempt to be granted parole, had the chutzpah to argue a <em>Tim</em> Op-Ed piece that his mised had wound up makg the world a better place: “The crime was tragic, but did serve society, urgg as did to e to the aid of s members distrs or danger.”</p><p class="has-dropp has-dropp__lead-standard-headg paywall">The fiftieth anniversary of the Genove murr has generated two full-length books about the se: “Kty Genove: The Murr, the Bystanrs, the Crime That Changed Ameri,” by Kev Cook (Norton), and “Kty Genove: A Te Acunt of a Public Murr and Its Private Consequenc,” by Cathere Pelonero (Skyhorse). Both thors have terviewed everyone there is to terview and reviewed the public rerds about the se, but so much attentn has preced their efforts that they wd up workg om nearly intil sets of facts, and sometim feels as if they were strag to stretch their acunts to book length. Both have cid to wre the te-crime style, which entails ocsnally tellg what people may have thought or felt, or prentg as quoted dialogue unrerd private scen om long ago—an unfortunate cisn, given how much the story turns on the tstworths of journalism.</p><p class="paywall">Cook is the more apt storyteller of the two. His peppy, knowg style lls to md pop-culture products om the time of the murr, like the magaze <em>Argosy</em> or the televisn crime drama “Naked Cy.” And he is firmly, and persuasively, the revisnist mp. He says that Moseley’s prosecutors nclud that there were only five or six wns who uld plsibly ttify at the trial. Pelonero is an anti-revisnist, who prents herself as a fenr of the sullied reputatn of Mart Gansberg, the <em>Tim</em> reporter on the story, and as someone who sists that the unpleasant tth about Genove’s neighbors’ behavr not be dodged. Her unt of te wns, gleaned om police rerds, is thirty-three. (Acrdg to Cook, the prosecutors who terviewed potential wns found that most didn’t grasp what had been gog on.) “Historil revisnism of the Kty Genove story was unrway, and the betiful twilight of He appears only termtently the two books about the se, but no matter; he told his own story. In 1999, he wrote a new troductn for a paperback edn of his “Thirty-eight Wns,” timed to the thirty-fifth anniversary of the murr; and 2008 Melville Hoe republished the package, wh an troductn by Samuel Freedman, as part of a seri lled Classic Journalism.</p><p class="has-dropp has-dropp__lead-standard-headg paywall">Back 1927, “The Rise of Amerin Civilizatn,” Charl and Mary Beard wrote about how the New York <em>World</em>, s heyday unr Joseph Pulzer, beme Ameri’s first mass-circulatn newspaper: “It exploed to the utmost lim the tragedy and edy of ntemporary life, all s ponent elements of sex, society, crime, perversn, love, romance, and emotn generally.” Although the <em>Tim</em> was always far more rpectable than the <em>World</em>, that passage ports wh Rosenthal’s scriptn of how he approached the Genove story: “News is not philosophy or theology but what certa human begs, reporters and edors, know will have meang and tert to other human begs, rears.” He scrib procsg the police missner’s remark about the thirty-eight silent wns as “vir shock . . . the realizatn that what you are seeg or hearg will startle a rear.”</p><p class="paywall">It was obvly disgenuo for Rosenthal to suggt that he had no personal reactn to the Genove murr—that he was merely makg a clil profsnal judgment about what would engage rears. His book, like most of his wrg, is wildly emotnal. The ia of the silent wns touched him some ep, primal way: “there is the tale of Cathere Genove a revelatn about the human ndn so appallg to ntemplate that only good n e om forcg onelf to nont the tth.” What’s more, “there mt be some nnectn between the story of the wns silent the face of greater crim—the gradatn of a race, children hungerg.” Rosenthal’s nvictns about the crime were so powerful that he was imperv to the tails of what actually happened. His summary of the se appropriated the high drama of the <em>Tim</em> piece, assertg “the chokg fact that thirty-eight of her neighbors had seen her stabbed or heard her cri, and that not one of them, durg that hio half-hour, had lifted the telephone the safety of his own apartment to ll the police and try to save her life.” By 1999, had bee clear that the origal story might have been overstated, but his new troductn Rosenthal was even ls rtraed: “Neighbors heard her scream her last half hour away and did nothg, nothg at all, to give her sucr or even cry alarm.”</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-2 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall">In 2004, at a fortieth-anniversary nference about the se that was held at Fordham, Rosenthal ma an appearance, and announced om the lectern that his sister Bs had died many years earlier after an cint that, to his md, had been Genove-like. The experts transformed a crime to a crisis.</p><p class="paywall">The manufacturg of the thirty-eight-wns myth had generally benign social effects.
