screens <a href=">tonight and tomorrow at the New York Film Ftival</a>, looks at one of the most famo of all morn crime stori, the 1964 murr of Kty Genove. The film do so through the foc of another genre, the personal documentary. Its ma character—s virtual tr—is Bill Genove, one of Kty’s three younger brothers, who was sixteen at the time of her murr; he was her favore brother, and the two were very close.</p><p class="paywall">The murr of Kty Genove—as Bill tails the film, both voiceover and on mera—beme major news ls for the specifics of the attack self than for the circumstanc surroundg . Genove was stabbed to ath between three and four the morng, on March 13, 1964; she was attacked twice by the same man, first near the Kew Garns railroad statn and then ont of her apartment. As reported by Mart Gansberg the <em>Tim</em>, Kty’s screams were heard by dozens of neighbors, who did nothg. The <em>Tim</em> edor A. M. Rosenthal (later the paper’s executive edor), who assigned the story to Gansberg and oversaw his reportg, rerced this narrative his own book about the se, published later that year. (Nicholas Lemann <a href=">tailed the journalistic genis</a> of the se <em>The New Yorker</em> earlier this year.) As Bill says the documentary, “My sister has been the symbol of bystanr apathy for s.”</p><p class="paywall">It took forty years for Bill—and he alone, among the members of Kty’s fay—to look behd the headl and try to fd out for himself how so many of her neighbors managed to hi their heads and ignore her agony. (Interviewed by Bill, Rasenberger says, “If the story had been reported more accurately, still would have been a two- or three-day, maybe even a four-day story, but would not have been a fifty-year story. We would not still be stg here talkg about today.”) Yet the mystery hidn the apparent range of non-rpons—by some, not all, who saw or heard the crime, and, even more surprisg, by the police—seems to poke through the tangle of evince to tell a clear, simple, and shockg story. As several journalists terviewed “The Wns” say, the origal <em>Tim</em> acunt long went unqutned precisely bee of the power and the prtige of the <em>Tim</em>. The apparent accuraci, taken as fact, also got the way of other ntemporary vtigatns that might have illumated the actual societal—and stutnal and polil—issu that the failed rpons to the attack on Kty Genove suggt.</p><div class="Contaer-bkChBi byNLHx"></div><p class="paywall">In his 2004 report, Rasenberger—referrg to the work of Joseph De May, an amatr historian om the neighborhood—wr, “Many wns claimed they thought was a lovers’ quarrel or a dnken argument spillg out of the Old Bailey,” a nearby bar. Rasenberger also says that De May “rais the possibily that several wns did ll the police after the first attack, but that their lls were ignored and never rerd.” In the urse of his vtigatn, Bill Genove por over the origal police ll log om the night of the attack. There, he disvers that fact at least one person did ll—and was told by the police that the precct was already aware of the attack. Prumably, someone else had already lled the partment—which then v the qutn, why did the police not head to the scene of the crime at once?</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-1 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall">Bill never fds any evince on the subject and never speculat on the reason. But one possible, and furiatgly plsible, reason is the one suggted by Rasenberger’s report. Bill do learn of a handful of valierly different neighbors who, beg aware of the attack, simply closed their doors and walked away. But many more of the wns (ear-wns, who heard Kty’s screams and cri for help) may well have done as Rasenberger suggts they did, and taken as a domtic nflict, albe one playg out public—a nflict that they prumed was nobody else’s bs, outsi their purview and outsi the purview of the law.</p><p class="paywall">Though the movie offers no new hypoth about the reasons for the origal nsistenci regardg the tails of the se, Bill’s rearch nohels v—and, I’d argue, suggts, even if untentnally—a horrifyg visn of what may have taken place behd the scen, at the police statn, while the crime was takg place. I found myself evably drawn, perhaps vidly, to imagg sk officers cidg not to rpond to the ial ll, bee they believed that the matter volved a domtic asslt, a lovers’ fight. I imaged that, wh a gmble or a chuckle, an officer hung up the phone and reacted wh difference to someone llg to pla that some guy was beatg his wife. At the very least, the movie serv as a ll for such addnal historil rearch.</p><p class="paywall">Though Bill Genove keeps his vtigatn close to the particulars of the Kty Genove se, the qutns raised by the film reach far beyond to society at large—and to the prent day. In “The Wns” other qutns of ongog importance emerge, cludg on relatg to the penal system, relatn to Kty Genove’s killer, Wston Moseley, whom Bill sought to terview. (Moseley is still alive and imprisoned.) Other qutns volve Kty’s life—and, particular, her relatnship wh her roommate at the time of her ath, Mary Ann Zielonko, who was her lover. Bill terviews Zielonko the film, and the story that emerg—along wh acunts of Kty om iends and lleagu—is a movg, novelistic visn of gay life New York at a time when homosexualy was still illegal.</p><p class="paywall">The movie is far om perfect. Its pacg is clumsy, wh too ltle sense of procs, of actn unfoldg the mera’s prence, of terviews velopg dramatilly. The veer toward the sound be and the vio clip substut rmatn for experience, which is all the more unfortunate given that the movie is centered on Bill’s emotnal exertns. The movie don’t e reënactments or generic archival footage to fill screen time, relyg stead on animated drawgs on-screen to sketch actn as scribed; they’re hardly better than reënactments, and they serve the same purpose, to provi visual wallpaper while discsn tak place. I’m cled to ascribe the choic to Solomon’s—as well as to Bill Genove’s—experience.</p><p class="paywall">But far more experienced—and herald—documentarians have never e up wh the masterstroke which the movie culmat. It’s the movie’s sole reënactment, and ’s an spired one. It don’t illtrate actn, <em>is</em> actn; the scene is a drama self, ’s separable om the practil and material circumstanc of s creatn, and ’s filmed a way that reveals the ccial behd-the-scen tails of that creatn. This brief, brilliant, harrowg rtagg is a directorial ventn of analytil brilliance. It’s a sort of forensic <em>rct ad absurdum</em>, a cematic experiment social science. Though the sequence is awkwardly filmed and punively eded, s ia and s effect e through powerfully.
