Neverthels, <em>girls</em> mis up vividly tailed sex scen wh episos of socsexual horror so succsfully that I image many women uld read only by turng the pag wh tongs. The distct type of misogyny Kelman's most terted talogg is, at any rate, ls a hatred of women than a hatred of human existence self.</p><p>Kelman don't shrk om the more nightmarish aspects of sex. One olr man swgs a teenage girl around so that her "ltle breasts" meet his "hungry mouth," and as he stuffs his fgers to her, he not that she "uldn't have weighed more than a hundred and five pounds"—a le that ma me nearly physilly ill. Soon enough, Salter's narrator is watchg the young lovers urt, fall love, undrs, have sex, and drift apart. Much of what the narrator tells volv experienc he has no direct accs to. As a rult, the book feels like an novatively triangulated hybrid of memoir, novel, and dream.</p><p>Salter's prose is the functnal equivalent of sex, thmmg and disassociated and sudnly hard and breathls when choos to pounce and lger: "The tras are nng on time. Along the empty streets, yellow headlights of a r ocsnally pass.... Wh a touch like flowers, she is gently tracg the base of his ck, driven by now all the way to her, touchg his balls, and begng to wrhe slowly beneath him a sort of obedient rebelln."</p><p>The great mistake most wrers make wrg about sex is approachg as though mers special attentn. It don't. It simply mers the same attentn one would give weather, a face, a tree. A bad lerary sex scene is cynil—a mercial for impossible sensatns. Wrers who wre about sex effectively unprivatize privacy; they remd a rear that he or she is not alone kk or quirk. To wre about sex well, you have to be brave. To <em>read</em> about sex well, though, you have to be hont. You have to be willg to be turned on, and you have to be willg to be disgted; you also have to unrstand the <em>difference</em> between beg turned on and beg disgted.
