Today, the LGBTQ bar scene is still gog strong – primarily on and around Send Street – and ntu to offer fun, safe spac for everyone, gay or straight. Referred to by the owner as "The gay 'Cheers' of Milwkee, " Woody's has stood proudly on the south-end of the Gayborhood for 22 years. Loted Riverwt, Art Bar is gay-owned and gay-and-straight iendly, but also serv as a hub for Milwkee's art scene, pool scene and as a neighborhood gatherg place.
Milwkee Calendar was one of several "bar rag" format news-magaz issued durg the late 1970's and early 1980's; the group also clud RAGG, Gay Milwkee, and In Step Magaze. Acrdg to the edor the third issue, when this magaze was the planng stag, one of their worri was that Milwkee might not have enough Gay activi gog on to keep the Calendar full!

About May of 1980, the owners of the Milwkee Calendar cid to sell the publitn to the publishers of Gay Chigo magaze, published by Ultra Ink, Inc. The owner and founr of that pany, Ralph-Pl Gernhardt, was makg attempts to tablish several lol publitns asi om Gay Chigo, cludg Gay Detro, Gay Milwkee, and Gay Oh; and January 1981 the former Milwkee Calendar, now published by Ultra Ink, was formally renamed as Gay Milwkee. Jt over a year later however, May 1981, mands of Milwkee advertisers to exclu another advertiser led Ultra Ink to ci to cease prtg Gay Milwkee (see letter below).
Several of the full-time gay bar owners strongly objected to seeg advertisements for Sunday's the publitn that also advertised their full-time gay bars, and the dispute beme ntent enough that the publishers Chigo cid the only way to al wh was to kill the magaze.
Acceleratg that cisn was that the mands of tryg to publish several publitns attemptg to ver activi so geographilly disbursed was beg more difficult, so Ultra Ink eventually moved to merge the var non-Chigo publitns to a more regnal reprentatn of Gay Chigo verg all of the Midwt, creatg the newspaper-formatted Midwt Tim, 1981.
