The disterment was schled for 7 <em class="small">p.m.</em>, and, exactly on time, a mache remblg a giant spir appeared. It started clawg at the ground, gradually producg a large mound of sand. The whole procs—the unearthg of the sket, the sgg of “Amazg Grace” Dutch, the slow parture of the whe hearse vered sunflowers—a sort of funeral reverse, took an hour and a half, and was broadst live on natnal TV. Frequently, the verage was tercut wh file footage of Fortuyn’s grievg followers, some of whom had had his slogan, “At your service,” tattooed— English—on their shoulrs.</p><p class="paywall">Policians are, their range, a ltle like poets; there are some who survive translatn, and some who don’t. Certaly, an Amerin idm much of what Fortuyn had to say sound racist. He claimed that he wanted to close Holland’s borrs—the untry, he liked to say, was “full”—and clared Islam a “backward” relign. “Morocn boys never steal om Morocns,” he asserted early this year a newspaper terview. “Have you noticed that?” As a nsequence of statements like the, he was often lumped together wh such reactnary xenophob as Jean-Marie Le Pen, Jörg Hair, and Belgium’s Filip Dewter, his succs terpreted as further evince of Europe’s rightward swg.</p><p class="paywall">Yet, at the same time, Fortuyn mataed that he was revolted by bigotry, and his own reer fely would have tted Amerin notns of tolerance. A ank votee of gay bars, Fortuyn once observed that he preferred a “darkroom,” the space provid by some Dutch night spots for sual sex, to the si of a church. Most of Holland knew that he was love, unrequedly, wh a mercial photographer, that he had a butler lled Herman, and that he was driven around the untry an enormo Jaguar wh his two ltle dogs, one of whom had been named after Herman’s ex-boyiend. (“Put on your lleagu,” Fortuyn ed to say to Herman when he wanted to hear the Slave Chos om “Aida.”) Often acced of racism, Fortuyn (pronounced “fore-town”) retorted, “I don’t hate Arab men—I even sleep wh them.” At the time of his murr, the week before the Dutch parliamentary electns, May, he was the leadg ndidate to bee the new Prime Mister.</p><p class="paywall">Fortuyn spent two and a half months the ground Driehuis, and durg that time was timated that a hundred and fifty thoand mourners vised his grave. After his sket had been removed, cemetery workers lowered box upon box of farewell not to the empty p, a procs that was also broadst live. No one I spoke to Holland seemed to fd the televised exhumatn any way odd; nor did anyone ment on the fact that Fortuyn, for all his Dutch natnalism, was beg dug up so that he uld be reburied near his summer hoe northern Italy. When I arrived the Netherlands, I assumed that his supporters didn’t see, or didn’t re to see, the nsistenci; gradually, however, I me to believe the reverse.</p><p class="paywall">I fally ught up wh Fortuyn, as were, the day after his exhumatn, his home town of Rotterdam. His rpse had spent the night at the airport, and by the time I got there, at 8 <em class="small">a.m.</em>, a crowd had assembled on the tarmac. Two striped tents had been set up to dispense rehments, and a group of teen-agers were handg out buttons prted wh another Fortuyn slogan: “<em>Ik zeg wat ik nk en ik doe wat ik zeg!</em>” (“I say what I thk and I do what I say!”) All morng long, mourners kept arrivg—by r, by b, and, this beg the Netherlands, by bicycle. Eventually, Fortuyn’s sket was wheeled out om a hangar and onto a chartered plane. A pair of fire tcks sprayed water high to the air, creatg a rabow. Everyone clapped, and several people standg near me began to weep. An elrly woman rryg an enormo mera clared, “He was our one hope for the future, and Holland is now lost.”</p><p class="has-dropp has-dropp__lead-standard-headg paywall">Rotterdam li at the mouth of the Rhe and the Maas Rivers, a tangle of waterways so plex that even many who live the cy nnot say exactly which is which. While I stood by the gate, several people pulled up, cludg a woman on a bicycle who was rryg a ndle. “I e here very often,” she told me after she had fished lightg . “Fortuyn said what we thought, what we would like to say, but most of the time we were aaid to. Jt like they did wh him, they ll you a racist.”</p><div><div class="ConsumerMarketgUnThemedWrapper-iUTMTf jssHut nsumer-marketg-un nsumer-marketg-un--article-mid-ntent" role="prentatn" aria-hidn="te"><div class="nsumer-marketg-un__slot nsumer-marketg-un__slot--article-mid-ntent nsumer-marketg-un__slot---ntent"></div><div class="journey-un"></div></div></div><p class="paywall">Fortuyn was born 1948 Velsen, northwt of Amsterdam, and christened Wilhelm Pets Simon—Pim for short. He was brought up as a Roman Catholic but apparently always had trouble wh the strictur of the Church; reportedly, one of his earlit sexual enunters was wh an altar boy. In the mid-sixti, Fortuyn went off to the Universy of Amsterdam to study soclogy, and beme a Marxist. His first job was at the Universy of Grongen, where, for sixteen years, he read Mao and tght urs on revolutnary theory. In 1988, he lost his teachg job a round of ernment budget cuts and moved to Rotterdam. There he seems to have exchanged dialectil materialism for materialism straight up. He opened a polil-nsultg bs, drifted to the right, and beme a lumnist for the Dutch weekly <em>Elsevier</em>. Eventually, he worked his way onto the pund circu, and, much mand as a rporate speaker, grew wealthy, though not necsarily as wealthy as the two ho, the butler, and the Jaguar mand.</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-1 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall">The notn of beg a polician seems to have occurred to Fortuyn only about a year and a half ago. To his iends as much as to anyone else, the ia sound improbable. In the Netherlands, even members of Parliament are expected not to put themselv forward, or tout their own learship abili, but to work their way quietly—and öperatively—up the party ranks. Fortuyn, however, was not planng a tradnal Dutch mpaign, as soon beme clear.</p><p class="paywall">In Augt, 2001, he joed a new party, lled Leefbaar Nerland, or Livable Netherlands, which, cintally, was lookg for a lear. For six months, he ed the Party to crease his visibily; then he managed to get himself kicked out of . In an terview wh Hans Wansk, a lumnist for <em>De Volkskrant</em>, Fortuyn clared, on the topic of immigratn, “As far as I am ncerned, no Mlim will ever e .” This was precisely the sort of ment he had promised not to make upon takg over the Party—remd of his broken pledge, Fortuyn replied, “That shouldn’t bother me!”—and, naturally, got a lot of prs. Wansk scribed Fortuyn as a brilliant media manipulator. “He was a geni performer, a pop-star kd of populist,” he told me.</p><div class="Contaer-bkChBi byNLHx"></div><p class="paywall">Wh days of his parture om Leefbaar Nerland, Fortuyn announced the creatn of another new party, which, ever more extravagant fashn, he named after himself. The Lijst Pim Fortuyn’s parliamentary slate clud an ex-bety queen, an optometrist, a chffr, some stunts, and a bsman who alt pornographic Web s. From the outset, Fortuyn predicted that he would be the next Prime Mister, a claim that was dismissed as jt another piece of theatrics until Rotterdam held s municipal electns, March. A slate of lol ndidat head by Fortuyn ran on an anti-crime, anti-immigrant platform. It me first, featg the Labor Party, which had n the cy almost whout terptn for eighty years.</p><p class="has-dropp has-dropp__lead-standard-headg paywall">One gray day while I was Rotterdam, I took a walk around the cy wh Han van r Horst, a social historian and the thor of a book about the Dutch lled “The Low Sky.” (The tle me om the father of van r Horst’s ex-wife, a Brazilian, who warned his dghter not to stay the Netherlands bee the sky there was too close.) A tall man wh very black eyebrows and ltle Jam Joyce glass, van r Horst met me at my hotel on a Saturday afternoon wearg a at and tie. No fan of Fortuyn’s, he spent much of our afternoon together tryg to e up wh the proper English term for him, fally htg on “charlatan.” Before we set out, van r Horst drank three cups of prso and smoked more cigarett than I uld keep track of. When he ran out, he uldn’t fd a pack of the brand he favors, so he bought a different kd and proceed to snap off all the filters.</p><p class="paywall">We began not far om the cy center, an area known as Ou Wten. The neighborhood, filled wh low brick apartment ho, was, thirty years ago, typilly Dutch, which is to say all but entirely whe. Now is crowd wh ethnic groceri, Surame take-out plac, and Arab mic shops. As we walked toward the river that divis the cy, the Niwe Maas, we passed a large brick church that had been nverted to a mosque, groups of Turkish men playg rds, and, among the neighborhood stor, several “ffee shops” of the sort that do not sell ffee. (On a subsequent walk through the cy, I stopped at one of the shops, where, for two dollars and fifty cents, I was offered a jot the size of a cigar.) Later, we cut across an outdoor market patronized mostly by veiled women. I asked several of them about Fortuyn, but none of them held, or were willg to exprs, strong opns. A young Morocn who had e to Holland five years ago told me that she was sadned by the murr. “If om Allah, ’s acceptable,” she said. “From man, ’s not.” In Delfshaven, the olst part of the cy, we vised the church where the Pilgrims had board the Speedwell, which they later trad for the Mayflower. Insi the church, we disvered an Ethpian weddg progrs. Van r Horst psed outsi to smoke several cigarett.</p><p class="paywall">Roughly a third of all Rotterdammers today are immigrants, and among the school-age populatn that figure close to two-thirds. Some are children of “gut workers,” who were brought om Turkey and Moroc when Holland was short of labor; others are om Dutch terrori like the Antill; still others have parents who me to the Netherlands seekg polil asylum. Unemployment is high the immigrant muni, as is the dropout rate, and the shift the cy’s populatn has cid wh a dramatic crease crime. Rotterdam’s murr rate now approach New York’s.</p><p class="paywall">Most of the neighborhoods that van r Horst and I vised were the sort of slums that the Dutch pot to to expla Fortuyn’s populary. But what the Dutch unt as slums stck me as entirely unremarkable—ed, applyg the standards of the Amerin ner cy, the neighborhoods were practilly middle class. Even the worst sectns of Rotterdam, the wdows, I noticed, had no bars, and the buildgs seemed good repair. It was explaed to me that when a neighborhood did slip too far, the ernment stepped , tore the whole thg down, and started over. (Unhappy wh the ndn of central Rotterdam, the Dutch ernment has cid to build an altogether new downtown on the south si of the Niwe Maas.)</p><p class="paywall">Toward the end of his tour, van r Horst took me, at my requt, to the edge of the cy, to a place lled a <em>gedoogzone</em>, or tolerance zone. Prostutn is legal the Netherlands, but streetwalkg is not, except a <em>gedoogzone</em>. Rotterdam’s, I had been told, was a blight on the cy, and a source of ntentn facg the new cy uncil. After a few wrong turns, van r Horst found the zone—basilly a walled- lot— an area of wholalers, wareho, and multilevel garag. It was early eveng, and only a few women, most of whom appeared to be junki, were there. The scene nveyed abject misery and, at the same time, a certa cheerful Dutch orrls. Bench had been provid, prumably at ernment expense, along wh a tidy ksklike shelter. Coverg one wall of the zone was a bright-yellow mural wh a floral theme; another was rated wh Pop-art msag—ty red lights spellg out the joys of anonymo sex. On the other hand, he acknowledged, Fortuyn was “typilly Dutch his ia that this is a small untry, that natnal pri is a good thg, and, pecially, that we have a more ratnal culture than the rt of the world.”</p><p class="has-dropp has-dropp__lead-standard-headg paywall">One night some years ago, Fortuyn and Arendo Jotra, who is now the edor--chief of <em>Elsevier</em>, had dner together a Rotterdam rtrant. Afterward, Fortuyn head out to his favore bar, the Shaft, and asked Jotra to e along. The bar had different drs—or, rather, undrs—s for different nights: some nights no shirts; others no pants. This particular night lled for no cloth. Acrdg to Jotra, who reunted the story to me, si the bar Fortuyn bumped to a Rotterdam cy official. Fortuyn and the official, both naked except for their sho, spent the rt of the night discsg municipal policy.</p><p class="paywall">At fifty-four, Fortuyn was tall and slim, wh a shaved head and piercg blue ey. Many women I spoke to told me they had found him extremely attractive. “He had flair, he had style,” a pete redhead I met at the airport said. “If he wasn’t gay, I said to my hband, I would take him immediately.” When clad, Fortuyn favored Armani sus wh matchg ti and handkerchiefs. (<em>Esquire</em> once named him the bt-drsed man Holland.)</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-2 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall">Fortuyn never ma the slightt effort to hi the fact that he was gay. On the ntrary, he was ntually alludg to—even flntg—his homosexualy, announcg on TV, for example, that he thought ejaculate tasted like Berenburg, a Dutch liqur. Anywhere else, such forthrightns might have been nsired polilly urageo, if also suicidal; Holland wasn’t clear what polil signifince had. Last year, the Netherlands beme the first untry the world to treat same-sex marriag exactly like more tradnal unns, and nowadays, wh adoptn a monplace, the stereotype of Dutch gay life is a middle-aged uple spendg the weekend at home wh the kids. “Mothers are proud of their sons if they fd a nice boyiend, and they lead a zy, bourgeois life,” van r Horst told me.</p><p class="paywall">A few days after Fortuyn’s exhumatn, I took the tra to Tilburg, thirty-five southeast of Rotterdam. Every summer, Tilburg hosts a fair that, over the urse of ne days, attracts some two ln people. The day I vised was Roze Maandag, or “Pk Monday,” and everythg—the ris, the game booths, the fun ho, the ndy stalls, the beer stands, even the herrg rts—was ftooned pk. I got to the fair midafternoon, and already was so mobbed that was difficult to walk. Gay upl and straight upl, children and parents, men black leather and elrly ladi leang on walkers were all lg around, while legns of volunteers soliced ntributns to the Dutch <em class="small">aids</em> Foundatn, and men pk drs hand out lollipops.</p><p class="paywall">I had an appotment to meet Henk Krol, the edor of a biweekly magaze, the <em>Gay Krant</em>, at a party that the magaze was hostg at the edge of the fair. “In the foreign prs, was dited several tim that Fortuyn was an extreme-right-wg figure,” Krol told me once we had got far enough away om the party’s sound system to talk. “I don’t believe that. He was a populist. He tried to expla thgs as easily as possible to a general public. In the begng, you heard people say, ‘I thk he’s the right guy, but he’s gay,’ and wh a year that disappeared. Wh a year, a large part of the Dutch populatn admired Pim Fortuyn regardls of whether he was gay or straight.</p><p class="paywall">“We like when people are a ltle b different,” Krol ntued. “On the other hand, we love to have l. I thk your untry you smoke probably more pot than we do here the Netherlands. We see that people want to smoke marijuana, so we make l. We know there is prostutn—O.K., let’s make a le for that. We know that there are gay people—O.K., let’s regulate . People thk that we are morn, liberal that. I don’t thk so. It’s very Calvistic—as long as is the l, we like .”</p><p class="paywall">Krol terpted his medatn to go hear a man a black velvet gown sg a versn of an old Beatl song—”Somethg the way he mov.” Later, he troduced me to his hband, a hairdrser om Edhoven. We strolled around the fair, and Krol poted out a booth where the Dutch police were tryg to rec gay ps. He also relled an cint that had occurred durg a vis he had ma to the fair wh Fortuyn on Roze Mandaag three years ago.</p><p class="paywall">“I saw him g out of the ltle shop of a fortune-teller, and he was pale,” Krol told me. “I asked him what had happened, and he said, ‘Well, ’s so strange. She told me a few thgs, and I really believe her.’ ‘But what did she tell you?’ He said, ‘Well, I n’t tell you.’ And om that moment on beme a nng joke. Whenever I saw Pim, whenever he lled me, I always had the same qutn: ‘Jt tell me—what did she say to you?’ And he never wanted to tell me.</p><p class="paywall">“Then, three weeks before his assassatn, I terviewed him and he said, ‘You always have that same qutn, and now I want to tell you.’ “ Krol lowered his voice to omo effect: “ ‘She said that my end would be terrible, and that I would have’—how do you say ?—’a vlent ath.’ “</p><p class="has-dropp has-dropp__lead-standard-headg paywall">For the eight years leadg up to May’s electn, the Netherlands was n by what was known as the “purple aln.” The aln was ma up of parti that should, prciple, have been antagonists—the left-leang Labor Party and the nservative Liberals. (It also clud a third, smaller party lled Democrats 66, and, as many mentators poted out, the lors of the three groups bed actually ma brown.) In The Hague, this kd of arrangement wasn’t nsired particularly unual. The Dutch—half admirgly, but also half satirilly—refer to their peculiar brand of polics as the “polrmol,” om the word <em>polr:</em> a piece of land that, through enormo llective effort, is reclaimed om the sea.</p><p class="paywall">On the matter of immigratn, the official stance of the purple aln was that there was, fact, nothg the matter. “Immigrants, and to a lser extent asylum seekers, are a taboo subject the Netherlands, where is extremely important always to be polilly rrect on ethnic issu” is how a guibook published two years ago for people dog bs the untry put . Fortuyn had no tert acmodatg this polrized nsens. Charged wh bigotry, he would turn the cricism on s head. “In Holland, homosexualy is treated the same way as heterosexualy: what Islamic untry do that happen?” he mand. Also speakg of Islam, Fortuyn once asked, “How n you rpect a culture if the woman has to walk several steps behd her man, has to stay the kchen and keep her mouth shut?” Unlike Le Pen et al., who lace their xenophobia wh anti-Semism, Fortuyn claimed the Jews—or, at least, secular Jews—as his alli. In his book “Fifty Years Israel, But for How Long?” he worried that the Jewish state, as a mocracy, might not be able to survive the threat posed by s fundamentalist neighbors. “Christiany and Judaism have gone through the procs of enlightenment, makg them creative and nstctive elements society,” he said an terview shortly before his ath. “That didn’t happen Islam. There is a tensn between the valu of morn society and the prcipl of Islam.”</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-3 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall">Versns of Fortuyn’s argument were repeated to me over and over the Netherlands, sometim by his admirers, but also often by his crics. I heard about young upl beg harassed on street rners for showg affectn, and about women who no longer felt fortable walkg alone. Several tim, I was told the story of a Rotterdam Imam who, cg the Koran, had clared that homosexuals were lower than swe. Cyriel Trischeijn is the head of the Rotterdam Anti-Discrimatn Actn Council, a group that sued Fortuyn for some of his attacks agast Islam. Trischeijn said that while teachers Rotterdam ed to feel secure about beg openly gay, as the number of immigrant stunts ntued to rise this was changg. “Homosexual teachers are gog back to the closet,” he told me.</p><p class="paywall">Eventually, I began to feel that I had heard too many such stori. Not all Holland’s immigrants are Mlims, and, of urse, not all Mlims are fundamentalists. The gravt problems associated wh immigratn, meanwhile—straed social servic, “whe flight,” and crime—have ltle or nothg to do wh relig iology. By elidg the plexi, Fortuyn arrived at a form of xenophobia ially sued to a natn that pris self on s tolerance. The problem wh immigrants is that <em>they</em> are tolerant. In this ntext, Fortuyn’s flamboyant gayns probably was an asset. After all, if you’re willg to back a man who brags about sleepg wh Arab boys, how much of a bigot n you really be?</p><p class="has-dropp has-dropp__lead-standard-headg paywall">On May 6th, ne days before the parliamentary electn, <em>De Volkskrant</em> published a survey taken by an pennt pollg firm. It predicted that Lijst Pim Fortuyn would be the largt party Parliament, makg Fortuyn the prumptive Prime Mister. That afternoon, Fortuyn gave a two-hour rad terview at a media plex outsi Amsterdam. He walked out to the parkg lot where his r was wag and was shot at six tim. He bled to ath before paramedics uld get him to an ambulance.</p><p class="paywall">In the fal weeks of the mpaign, Fortuyn had been repeatedly heckled and threatened; protters held up signs that said “<em>Stop Hollandse Hair!</em>” and at one pot someone threw cream pi doed wh ure at his face. Still, the circumstanc of the assassatn—the first of signifince the Netherlands sce 1584—were bafflg. Fortuyn’s killer was a thirty-two-year-old ant animal-rights activist named Volkert van r Graaf. When journalists looked for statements that Fortuyn had ma on the subject of animal rights, they uldn’t fd any. (It did e out that one of the members of the L.P.F.’s parliamentary slate was the head of the natnal pig farmers’ associatn.) At this pot, is wily assumed that van r Graaf was actg alone, out of some mixture of personal and polil rage; neverthels, I met several Rotterdammers who said they were nfint that he was part of a larger nspiracy. “Pim was too outspoken—they were aaid of that,” one woman told me, whout specifyg who “they” were. In his prison cell, Amsterdam, van r Graaf is unr ntuo vio surveillance, mostly, seems, so that if he ms suici the ernment will have a rerd of . Subsequently, the Party was ved to jo a new ernment to be head by Jan Peter Balkenen, a former profsor who has been dubbed the Dutch Harry Potter for his youthful but owlish looks. At the time of Fortuyn’s exhumatn, Balkenen was still the procs of puttg this ernment together, and, the negotiatns, the L.P.F. managed to secure ntrol of four Mistri, cludg the Mistry of Immigratn and Integratn. Almost immediately, began nng to difficulti. By a cur twist, an L.P.F. member named Philomena Bijlhout beme the first foreign-born Cabet member Dutch history when she was named to the posn of Junr Mister of Fay and Emancipatn. The very day she was sworn , Bijlhout was forced to rign, after a televisn statn reported that she had lied about her service the Surame ia. Not much later, L.P.F. members oted the Party’s first post-Fortuyn lear, a oime Defense Mistry spokman named Mat Herben. Jt a week ago, an L.P.F. member was spend om Parliament on the ground that he had a crimal rerd.</p><p class="paywall">On my last day Rotterdam, I went to vis the Stadhuis, or Cy Hall, where Fortuyn had briefly served on the cy uncil—the only elective office he ever held. A grand Bex Arts stcture and one of the few downtown buildgs that were not stroyed the war, the Stadhuis is filled wh memorials to famo Rotterdammers, cludg the cy’s most celebrated cizen, Erasm, who was born there—illegimately— 1469. In the uncil chamber, I saw the chair that Fortuyn had sat , now left empty his memory. I also stopped by his lol Party office, which was still stocked wh Fortuyn paraphernalia—posters and ps and photographs and mpaign flyers. From every wall, I felt Fortuyn gazg down at me, and all the pictur, seemed to me, he wore much the same exprsn—a se at once engagg and mockg.</p><p class="paywall">One of the many lgerg qutns about Fortuyn is what he himself ma of his unlikely reer. In Rotterdam, I was offered many acunts of his motiv, none of which, tertgly enough, had much to do wh actually nng the Netherlands. His real goal, I was told, was to make a pot or, alternatively, to shake thgs up or to start a movement or—and this was a popular theory—jt to be loved.</p><p class="paywall">Recently, Harry Mens, a Dutch real-tate magnate and a nfidant of Fortuyn’s, told <em>De Telegraaf</em> that, for all his boastg, Fortuyn never expected, or even wanted, to get as far as he did: “You know what Pim had md? A small party wh about fifteen seats, so that he uld act like Pietje Bell”—a prankster Dutch children’s stori—” Parliament while ntug his lucrative life. When the polls went up like they did, he got very nervo.” In the same terview, Mens mented on the impossibily of protectg Fortuyn: “Pim sent half of his bodyguards home bee he did not like their fac, and wh the other half he dived to a bar.
