But the popular image of Alda don’t ver the remarkable breadth of his reer. There was, of urse, his eleven-year n playg Hawkeye on “<a href="><em>M*A*S*H</em></a>,” the era-fg wartime dramedy. (The seri fale, which Alda directed, is still the hight-rated episo of a scripted seri ever aired.) He was a genial prence Woody Allen movi the eighti and neti, a voice Marlo Thomas’s children’s album “Free to Be . . . You and Me,” a Republin Printial ndidate on “<a href=">The Wt Wg</a>,” an agg hippie “Flirtg Wh Disaster,” and a kd but ept divorce lawyer “<a href=">Marriage Story</a>.” Durg the “<em>M*A*S*H</em>” years, Alda was an outspoken advote the femist movement. He’s directed four movi, wrten three books, and, om 1993 to 2005, hosted PBS’s “Scientific Amerin Frontiers,” beg a kd of pop-culture science teacher. In 2009, he helped create the Alan Alda Center for Communitg Science, at Stony Brook Universy.</p><p class="paywall">The days, Alda’s primary occupatn is podster. He recently released the two-hundredth episo of “<a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Clear+Vivid wh Alan Alda</a>,” on which he has terviewed thors, artists, scientists, and lumari, cludg Yo-Yo Ma, Helen Mirren, Stephen Breyer, and Malee Albright. When Alda appeared on my Zoom screen recently, he wore tortoishell glass and ocsnally sipped om a blue mug wh a sailboat on . His right hand had a visible tremor, a symptom of Parkson’s disease. He was at his hoe on Long Island, where he’s spent the panmic wh his wife of sixty-five years, Arlene Alda. When he’s not preparg for his podst, he and Arlene play chs durg the day (“She’s jt beaten me three tim a row, which she’s exultant over”) and ladr ball before dk, then eat a nice dner and bge-watch TV shows (lately, Sndavian fay dramas). “It’s not noisy the untry,” Alda said. “I don’t have to show up plac. I get to talk to some of the most tertg and smartt people the world.</p><p class="paywall"><strong>Do you have a guidg philosophy for terviewg?</strong></p><p class="paywall">I do, and that is to have a genue nversatn and not ask them qutns that I prepared advance. It should e out of genue cursy, bee that opens the other person up. I realized, while I was dog “Scientific Amerin Frontiers,” that I was makg e of thgs I’d learned as an improviser and as an actor.</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-1 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall"><strong>How do improvisatn help you munite wh people who are not actors?</strong></p><p class="paywall">Improvisg requir relatg. I’m not talkg about edy improvisg—I’m talkg about improvisg based on the work of Vla Spol. You have to observe the other person. You have to be watchg their face, their body language, bee om that you fd out what they’re really sayg to you. When I would be talkg to the scientists, took them out of lecture mo and put them nversatnal mo.</p><p class="paywall"><strong>I’m gog to try to keep all this md as I ask you qutns.</strong></p><p class="paywall">You know, ’s funny. For the book that I wrote about this, lled “<a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">If I Unrstood You, Would I Have This Look on My Face?</a>,” which is a nutshell what we’re talkg about, I thk three people who terviewed me said, “I’m takg the challenge. I’m closg my laptop right now.”</p><p class="paywall"><strong>Helpg scientists munite is a real passn of yours. Were you seeg a problem you wanted to help solve?</strong></p><p class="paywall">It didn’t occur to me that there was a problem to be solved. What we were dog on the televisn show was eful to makg science more accsible to the public, and I wonred, If we traed scientists, startg om actually improvisg, would they be able to relate to the dience the way they were relatg to me? I did a kd of experiment. One day I was at a universy L.A., and I had twenty engeerg stunts e one at a time to talk to the others about their work. Then we improvised for three hours and they talked aga, and everybody the room was surprised at how much clearer was, how nnected they were to the dience, not jt rattlg off at them. Later, we veloped a curriculum.</p><p class="paywall"><strong>Can you give an example of an improv exercise that you’ve done wh scientists?</strong></p><p class="paywall">One of the most basic thgs is the Mirror Exercise. Let’s you and I do . You be my mirror. [<em>He holds his palms up</em>.] No matter what I do, you have to stantaneoly do the same thg. [<em>I put my hands up to the screen. His hands drift apart and then together, and I follow. Then he jerks his right hand to the si, and my left hand trails behd.</em>] Now, did you see what jt happened? After we do a number of exercis based on improvisg, then we help them tailor their msage to the dience that’s gog to hear .</p><div class="Contaer-bkChBi byNLHx"></div><p class="paywall"><strong>This seems so relevant to what we’ve been through the panmic, when public-health officials have had to munite plex and evolvg rmatn to everyone on the entire pla, basilly. <a href=">Dr. Fci</a> is a good munitor, and yet people still have trouble unrstandg what is happeng day to day.</strong></p><p class="paywall">I’ve been sorry to see that a basic msage about science has not been munited better than has been, which is that science evolv. We had this problem long before <em class="small">COVID</em>, where people would say, “Last year, you told me that red we was good for me. This year, you’re tellg me that ’s not. What are you gog to tell me tomorrow? You n’t make up your md!” Good scientists doubt their own work. It’ll look like they’re ntradictg themselv, but they’re learng more about different ways. One scientist had a good analogy: If you were a football game and you kept dog the same play over and over aga, even though you were losg, would a fan say, “What are you dog? You’re changg the plan! First, there was passg. Now you’re tellg me to n through the middle?”</p><p class="paywall"><strong>And yet so many people say, “Why are you tellg me to wear a KN95 mask, when six months ago a cloth mask was fe?” The science is evolvg, and the vis is evolvg, so naturally ’s gog to change.</strong></p><p class="paywall">I thk there’s a problem when you see a le at the bottom of a science article that says, “More rearch is required.” That ought to be closer to the top. And the headle shouldn’t say, “New Breakthrough! Everythg’s Fixed!”</p><p class="paywall"><strong>Why do you thk that there’s such a persistent anti-science sentiment this untry? It’s been really pronounced durg the panmic, wh the anti-vax movement, but seems like a feature of Amerin life. Or maybe ’s human life.</strong></p><p class="paywall">I don’t know why people have lost touch wh the basic workgs of science. When you hear people who don’t believe there’s a problem wh climate change, they ll themselv skeptics. Scientists are <em>profsnal</em> skeptics. When the vast majory of them talk about the problems of climate change, they’re workg om a set of facts that the person who’s jt heard about has not.</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-3 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall"><strong>As a science enthiast, are there any particular scientific ncepts that you’re really terted at the moment?</strong></p><p class="paywall">It all knocks me out. I have only a smatterg of knowledge, so I don’t have to pretend to an ignorance I don’t posss. I thought was really tertg that <em class="small">CRISPR</em>, the gene-edg tool, borrowed machery om bacteria, which n fd a spot the DNA of vis that are tryg to va the bacteria and chop up the DNA of the vis. So n fd like a G.P.S. system and snip like a pair of scissors, as far as I unrstand . And the lowly bacteria are now helpg revolutnize medice. Did that make sense, what I said? Has space been a long-standg tert of yours?</strong></p><p class="paywall">No. It was funny bee I never unrstood why was such a big al that Pluto had to be moted. Maybe ’s bee Pluto is associated wh the name of the rtoon character—sort of soft and fuzzy. On that same show, I talked to the <a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">bgrapher</a> of [the rbon scientist] Millie Drselhs, who I met Oslo when I helped give her the Kavli Prize. Every uple of years, I’d help the Kg of Norway give the Kavli Prize, and Millie was one of those people. It turned out she me om the Bronx, where Arlene, my wife, me om, so she clud her her book, lled “<a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Jt Kids om the Bronx</a>.”</p><p class="paywall"><strong>Who else is om the Bronx?</strong></p><p class="paywall">Oh, so many people. Carl Reer. And some people you never heard of—but all people who had tertg liv. It’s jt about their childhoods the Bronx. It’s a lovely book. I went to high school there, and we did a lot of nature trips to Van Cortlandt Park.</strong></p><p class="paywall">One of the people her book, to make a ltle extra money one summer, grew pot the park and sold to micians the Borscht Belt. He later turned out to be a solid cizen. I n’t remember if he beme a judge or what.</p><p class="paywall"><strong>I was readg your memoir “<a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Never Have Your Dog Stuffed</a>,” and there was a le that I liked: “I was cur om the first moments—not as a pastime, but as a way to survive.” What did you mean by that?</strong></p><p class="paywall">My mother, unfortunately, was schizophrenic and paranoid. I had to her realy to figure out what actual realy was. She would see thgs that weren’t there. She’d assume she was beg spied on. And I remember om a very early age, noticg her prsn and wonrg what was all about. I was cur, but maybe a ltle extra cur, bee I had to figure out what was happeng.</p><p class="paywall"><strong>Do you thk that has anythg to do wh your sense of cursy about science, about human behavr?</strong></p><p class="paywall">Well, I was also an amatr ventor as a kid. I would make drawgs of ventns. I vented a five-way n opener, and I built a malted-k mache.</p><p class="paywall"><strong>Did work?</strong></p><p class="paywall">It didn’t explo, I know that. And I remember signg a hoe that was on a hill over a swimmg pool, so you uld look down through the glass floor at the pool. Kd of a stupid ventn. But one of the thgs I vented that was not so stupid was a lazy San a reigerator, so you wouldn’t have to reach to the back. A year after I thought of that, one was on the market. But then they stopped sellg them a year or two later. I gus there were ketchup bottl flyg across the kchens of Ameri.</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-5 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall"><strong>You’ve always radiated a kd of cency and goodns as an actor—</strong></p><p class="paywall">How dare you speak to me that way!</p><p class="paywall"><strong>—but you grew up around seedy burlque clubs. In your book, you scribe your father shootg craps, and you beg the showgirls’ drsg rooms as a kid, which is so different than I thk how people would image Alan Alda as a child.</strong></p><p class="paywall">Or any other child! Well, ’s not the polar oppose of beg cent. There was no cency that I was aware of, jt a lot of naked-idy. I was the wgs, watchg burlque shows, om the time I was two or two and a half, and I was very aware of the naked women. But I was also aware of the ics, and I watched their sketch, and sometim as a joke they put me the sketch. That’s how I learned actg, om watchg om the si.</p><p class="paywall"><strong>Your father, Robert Alda, was a “t sger”?</strong></p><p class="paywall">He would stand on the si of the stage and sg a song the openg number while the chos girls parad, ually wh nothg on om halfway up. There was this one number—I thk the mic might have been “Battle Hymn of the Republic”—and at the end an Amerin flag rose the background, and the chos girls yanked open their jackets, revealg their chts, and saluted. It was tnal. And historic.</p><p class="paywall"><strong>Oh, boy. And your father was the origal Sky Masterson “Guys and Dolls” on Broadway.</strong></p><p class="paywall">I stood the wgs and watched, ually every Saturday, two shows. I knew my father so well, so the difference between him and the character was stctnal to me. Even better than that was watchg Sam Levene [as Nathan Detro], who was a very spontaneo actor. He would say the exact same words, but they would e out differently every night. The mic of what he was sayg was different. He would sometim get a lgh a different place than when me last night. Once, I was helpg him learn his l when I was ten years old, and I said, “I thk you uld read that differently.” I was directg him.</p><p class="paywall"><strong>When you started actg, were you fg yourself opposn to him?</strong></p><p class="paywall">I thought he had the leadg-man thg sewn up, so I saw myself more as an eccentric edian. Then, as I got olr, I realized I had to take on the leadg-man part.</p><p class="paywall"><strong>What was the first actg role that really challenged you?</strong></p><p class="paywall">They all did. I like the notn of workg as hard as you n but eternally beg a kd of amatr. I’ve often thought that whatever method I have chang wh each part I play. Somehow I gotta get to where I want what the character wants. I don’t feel I’m there until I feel I’m entled to get what the character wants.</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-7 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall"><strong>What do you mean by “entled”?</strong></p><p class="paywall">Well, whatever he wants—om “I want your lunch” to “I want your wife” to “I want you ad.” They ll actors bee we acplish actn. There’s somethg dynamic gog on, and that’s ually associated wh a want, a sire. You n act as if you want somethg but not really believe . That’s not very tertg to watch.</p><p class="paywall"><strong>In your early reer, were there people who tght you or showed by example what you’re talkg about?</strong></p><p class="paywall">Once a while, I’d fd myself beg mentored by someone, but very mor ways. Thgs like “Don’t n out of breath a long speech.” I was at an dn once, when I was about twenty-one, and the guy stg next to me had been the theatre for s. He said, “You know, ’s very important to know your first le.” When you thk about , I gus is! If you’re gog to pick a le to not know, shouldn’t be the first one.</p><p class="paywall"><strong>One of your breakout rol was 1964, the Broadway productn of “The Owl and the Psyt,” wh Diana Sands. What do you remember about that?</strong></p><p class="paywall">Diana and I were a ltle petive wh each other. It was only a two-character play, and each of was tryg to take the stage away om the other. We were watchg each other like hawks. We got a lot of praise for “ensemble actg,” when what we were dog was the oppose.</p><p class="paywall"><strong>And then you did “The Apple Tree,” a Broadway mil directed by <a href=">Mike Nichols</a>. Do any of his directns stick your md?</strong></p><p class="paywall">Barbara Harris and I were rehearsg a scene, and Mike said, “You’re not relatg to each other much at all.” He said, “You kids thk relatg is the icg on the ke. It’s the <em>ke</em>.” And that put to words what I was learng, and that has bee foundatnal for me, not jt my work as an actor but all this other stuff we’ve been talkg about, like the podst.</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-8 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall"><strong>Is that still how you work?</strong></p><p class="paywall">As much as I n. It’s an attempt at empathy: What’s gog on the other person? If you build up that mcle, the floodgat open up, and there’s stuff gog on back and forth between the two of you.</p><p class="paywall"><strong>It sounds easy to be spontaneo, but ’s probably the harst thg the world.</strong></p><p class="paywall">Well, ’s easy to put other thgs first. You n tell when you watch actg to which not a lot of time has been put. You see a lot procral police televisn shows, where they’ve got to get twelve closps of twelve people a room, and the actors are sayg thgs like “Maybe he did at four o’clock.” “No, the eeway was closed at four o’clock. Maybe he did at three o’clock.” They’re not really talkg to one another. They’re sayg bee ’s on the page.</p><p class="paywall"><strong>You, of urse, played the same character for eleven years on “<em>M*A*S*H</em>.” Was difficult to mata the level of hns and spontaney that you’re talkg about?</strong></p><p class="paywall">There were probably dips attentivens. But one of the ways that we avoid that was the procs we veloped off mera, while we were wag to do the shots. Instead of gog back to our drsg rooms, most of the time we sat around a circle of chairs and ma fun of one another. And lghg together, havg a ltle party, gave a nnectn, and we jt ntued to the scene. Sometim we would keep talkg while they were llg for quiet on the set, and jt before the first le of dialogue we’d get quiet. It sounds undiscipled, but was a disciple of a different kd. We were keepg the nnectn gog.</p><p class="paywall"><strong>What you’re scribg sounds a lot like the mararie of the characters on the show—the doctors who are workg a dangero environment, and all they really have is one another’s pany.</strong></p><p class="paywall">None of experienced anythg like what the people real <em class="small">MASH</em> uns had to go through, but we had long days that were exhstg. Twelve-hour days were mon. You have to be more alert than you ually are, bee this is gog to go out over the air. I started out havg really negative opns about war. As a ltle boy durg the Send World War, watchg war movi, I had a piece of rdboard wh the silhouett of Amerin and Japane plan, and I would watch the ski to see if we were beg vad by Japane pilots. And we played war gam the back yard. As I got olr and I got to thk about what would be like to kill somebody or get shot at myself, I veloped a real distaste for . Now we’ve got wholale slghter of civilians—materny hospals, schools. This kd of btaly is not new. Every generatn or so, you get people sayg, “This time, this is a good war. Somethg good will e out of this.”</p><p class="paywall"><strong>Right. Humany has to keep learng the same lsons over and over aga.</strong></p><p class="paywall">I really wonr whether we’ll ever be pable of learng.</p><p class="paywall"><strong>“<em>M*A*S*H</em>” was so brilliant at bg the terror of war and edy, and mak me thk about Volodymyr Zelensky, who, of urse, <a href=">was a edic actor</a> and is now the Print of a untry at war.</strong></p><p class="paywall">I watched his show, where a high-school teacher be the Print of a untry. And then the guy who plays that part be the Print of the untry, almost mirrorg the story. He’s a remarkable guy. Communitg the ias that are the show has helped him be a munitor as a Print, like when he did that <a href=">Victory Day march</a> down the street alone, stead of Put’s tanks.</p><p class="paywall"><strong>Yeah, there’s a kd of improv spir to .</strong></p><p class="paywall">When you talk about nnectg, he’s nnected wh the whole world a way that few people have my life.</p><p class="paywall"><strong>On a pletely different note, n you tell me how you got volved “<a href=">Free to Be . . . You and Me</a>”?</strong></p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-10 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall">When my iend Marlo Thomas thought of the project, she asked me if I wanted to ntribute any material or perform. That was for the album versn. Then she ed some of that material the TV versn. I wound up actg , dog songs , and directg most of the sketch. I wound up directg my iend Mel Brooks and Marlo the <a href=">baby sequence</a>. It’s gog to be fifty years sce we did the rerd, and generatns of kids have grown up wh that.</p><p class="paywall"><strong>It’s such an credible project, bee children are still bombard wh so much genr stereotypg and tells you that you don’t have to follow those nventns. Why was that important to you the seventi?</strong></p><p class="paywall">I was a very vol femist, maly the effort to get the Equal Rights Amendment passed. I spent about ten years or more votg most of my time to that. When I wasn’t shootg or wrg, I was out mpaigng, talkg to the state legislatur and at ralli church basements.</p><p class="paywall"><strong>Weren’t you lled an “honorary woman”?</strong></p><p class="paywall">The Boston <em>Globe</em> lled me an “honorary woman.” But I kd of regret that, bee menopse was horrible.</p><p class="paywall"><strong>Well, you’ll live longer.</strong></p><p class="paywall">That’s te! I never thought of that way.</p><p class="paywall"><strong>I n’t thk of very many other male public figur who went out of their way to intify themselv as femists. It was sort of a cursy. There weren’t many men speakg out about femism, but to me seemed like fairns to both sex was beneficial to both sex. Why tell half the populatn they’re not entled to participate the culture? Then there was a reactn agast , that didn’t seem manly enough, or was wimpy or somethg like that.</p><p class="paywall"><strong>There’s so much talk now about how to be a good ally to var , whether ’s femism or <a href=">Black Liv Matter</a>. But you really saw the value of beg an ally to women very early.</strong></p><p class="paywall">And was weled. I thk acceptg the help of alli is a good ia, as long as the alli are scere and get the pot—which is not always that easy to do. The people on the ground tend to unrstand what’s need more than the people the tower. So you really have to be willg to listen. One of the people I terviewed was Melda Gat, and she told me that, when she was begng her work philanthropy, she learned to listen more to the people she wanted to help. When she was India wh sex workers, explag that she was gog to help get them much greater accs to ndoms, to protect them om diseas, the women said, “We don’t need ndoms. We need protectn om the men who want to beat up when we ask them to e a ndom.” So if you want to be an ally you n make an assumptn that you n help a certa way, which isn’t necsarily what’s need.</p><p class="paywall"><strong>Right, there’s the risk of arrogance.</strong></p><p class="paywall">Certaly not tentnal. I’ve heard you say, “No, I don’t really play only nice guys.”</strong></p><p class="paywall">I’m always terted characters who are flawed, and at least half of the people I’ve played have been serly flawed. So I don’t know. I mt ooze somethg that I’m not even aware of. Every time I play a really bad guy, somebody says, “Gee, you’ve never done that before.” And I’ve done many bad characters. So I don’t know what’s oozg there.</p><p class="paywall"><strong>You’ve played a lot of senators. I unted at least three.</strong></p><p class="paywall">Yeah, senators, doctors, lawyers. I look better a su than a locloth.</p><p class="paywall"><strong>You were at the openg night of “<a href=">Oh, Hello on Broadway</a>,” and I love those characters, Gee and Gil [the alte kakers played by John Mulaney and Nick Kroll], who are tense Alan Alda fans. How did you fd out about them?</strong></p><p class="paywall">I thk they ntacted me through my nephew, who’s an actor, Ian Alda, and I looked at their stuff on YouTube. Was that <a href=">openg night</a> I was wh them?</p><p class="paywall"><strong>Y. When I heard you were there, I thought, They’ve done ! The ultimate up! But people love to thk of you as the ultimate Upper Wt Si tellectual, lovable fuddy-duddy.</strong></p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-13 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall">The fuddy-duddy part I don’t get. I need to get my ths of idmatic English out.</p><p class="paywall"><strong>A few years ago, you revealed that you have Parkson’s disease. How are you dog?</strong></p><p class="paywall">Surprisgly well. It was seven years ago that I was diagnosed, and I have a tremor, which means that I n play any character as long as he has a tremor.</p><p class="paywall"><strong>Did your character “Marriage Story” have a tremor?</strong></p><p class="paywall">Yeah. We didn’t mentn . It was a very slight tremor at that pot. I worked wh Liev Schreiber on “Ray Donovan,” and they wrote to the script, bee [the ma character’s] brother had a tremor. So his therapist had the same problem that his brother had, which they thought would be tertg.</p><p class="paywall"><strong>I image that you spend more of your time wh doctors sce you got this diagnosis. Have you noticed anythg about the doctors’ abili to munite wh you as a patient?</strong></p><p class="paywall">I fd the doctors I talk wh all very munitive. Except, at least on one ocsn, one of them said, “There’s this study, but I’m sure you know all about that”—assumg that I know more than I know, bee I’ve terviewed so many scientists.</p><p class="paywall"><strong>They probably also know that you played a doctor on “<em>M*A*S*H</em>” and assume that you have vast medil knowledge.</strong></p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-14 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall">We actually had a iend once whose hband llapsed the bathroom the middle of the night, and her first stct was to ll me.
