I uld tell she was listeng when the flow of water om the kchen fcet slowed to a trickle, or stopped altogether.</p><p class="paywall">I turned to Brahms bee I always turn to Brahms, moods bright or dark. I intify wh the protagonist of Wallace Stevens’s “Anglais Mort à Florence,” for whom Brahms is a “dark faiar.” People who claim to fd Brahms dry or dismal—’s not an unmon opn, even among otherwise discerng mic lovers—are speakg gibberish that I n’t bate, bee I don’t unrstand a word. I fd him the most pannable, the most sympathetic of posers. There is enormo sadns his work, and yet is a sadns that glows wh unrstandg, that eas gloom by sharg s own. The mic seems a strange way to be listeng to you, even as you listen to . At a time when an unmonly large number of people are experiencg grief, I remend Brahms as a unsellor and nfidant.</p><p class="paywall">I’m not proposg that this or any mic should be ed as a palliative. We rob the art form of s digny when we treat as a utily to manage our emotns. Philip Kennitt, his new book “<a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Counterpot: A Memoir of Bach and Mourng</a>,” speaks my md: “I bristle at the ia that mic is nsolg or has healg power. It is a cliché of lazy mic talk, the sort of thg said by people who give money to the symphony and have their nam chiseled on the wall of the opera hoe.” It is also a cliché of the digal age, which routely subjugat mic to life-style needs: dividual creative voic are bundled to playlists signed to help wake up, foc, zone out, make love, and fall asleep. Kennitt ntu, “Mic, if anythg, mak raw, more sceptible to pa, nostalgia, and memory.” His lyril and hntg book tells of how he immersed himself Bach’s Goldberg Variatns the wake of his own mother’s ath. The mic guis him through the plexy of his feelgs—his experience as a son was far more ght than me—and lets him emerge on the other si.</p><p class="paywall">Bach is undoubtedly mic’s supreme pann of extreme distrs. He is the great poet of the ambiguo, -between, namels emotns: ambient unease, pervasive wistfulns, bemed rignatn, ntaed rage, ironic merriment, sg through tears, the almost pleasurable fatigue of ep prsn. In a repertory full of arrted adolcents, he is the most adult of posers.</p><p class="paywall">In the world of Brahms, is, above all, always late. Light is wang, shadows are growg, silence is encroachg. The topic of latens and lonels Brahms is a faiar one; the adjectiv “tumnal” and “elegiac” follow him everywhere. Scholars have tried to parse Brahmsian melancholy terms bgraphil, philosophil, and socpolil. He was a self-ntaed man who never married and prized his separatens. He belonged to a generatn that saw the irreversible transformatn of nature the age of steam and speed. Rehold Brkmann, his book “<a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Late Idyll</a>,” speaks of Brahms’s nscns of his lateer stat mil history, at the end of a le that began wh Bach and reached s height wh Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, and Schubert. After him me the luge of twentieth-century mic, of which he got a glimpse the hothead youthful works of Mahler and Richard Strss.</p><div class="Contaer-bkChBi byNLHx"></div><p class="paywall">It’s wrong, however, to view Brahms as a backward-lookg or nostalgic poser, at least the nventnal sense of nostalgia. Nile Grim, her fely perceptive book “<a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Brahms’s Elegi</a>” (dited to her mother’s memory), c the ncept of reflective nostalgia, as fed by the late lerary scholar <a href=">Svetlana Boym</a>. Unlike rtorative nostalgia, which envisns a return to home, reflective nostalgia “lays the homeg—wistfully, ironilly, sperately,” Boym’s words. “Reflective nostalgia dwells on the ambivalenc of human longg and belongg and do not shy away om the ntradictns of morny.” Rtorative nostalgia tends toward the reactnary; reflective nostalgia n be fully morn. Brahms certaly belongs to the latter tegory. Op 117, No. 1 begs wh a lullaby of heartbreakg simplicy and pury, but giv way to a middle sectn of broodg, bass-exvatg arpeggs, and when the lullaby returns is embroired, dispersed, distanced om realy. In 1933, <a href=">Arnold Schoenberg</a> livered a lecture tled “Brahms the Progrsive,” scribg how his precsor’s trite velopmental techniqu fluenced his own mornist methods. There are moments Brahms when the entire tonal system seems to be hangg by a thread. This happens pecially some of the late piano piec, when stable tonal progrsns grow srce and you feel an abyss openg unrneath a lm surface. The atmosphere of agily is of a piece wh Brahms’s skepticism toward anized relign, his almost existential sense of the human ndn. He ponred the tremendo qutns that Schopenher and Nietzsche raised their philosophil wrg, though he did not necsarily accept their answers.</p><p class="paywall">There were lims to Brahms’s progrsivism. As Grim pots out, he remaed te to stras of German ialist philosophy that younger artists were abandong, and, spe his agnosticism, he revered German Prottant culture. He was, after all, never too radil for my mother, who was a vout Greek Orthodox Christian, and who risted the more morn mic that has been the foc of my work as a cric. She once proudly reported to me that she had enjoyed parts of Olivier Msiaen’s “<a href=">Quartet for the End of Time</a>,” but for the most part she stayed put the eighteenth and neteenth centuri. The Vienne classil tradn, wh s termglg of songfulns and sophistitn, was her home ground. Mozart was always the pnacle, particularly when played by Rudolf Serk, her mil idol. Her most memorable celebry enunter was ridg an elevator wh Mr. Serk before a ncert.</p><p class="paywall">My mother had a difficult childhood, marked by fay disrd and fancial speratn. A brilliant stunt, she found her llg as a scientist, yet she also had substantial artistic gifts. There was no mistakg her avid rponse when I applied myself to mic, art, and wrg. Deprived of a stable upbrgg, she created an idyll for me and my brother. My cht of drawers was rated wh Wnie-the-Pooh patgs that were jt as good as what you see the books. At Christmastime, our hoehold had not jt one ma tree but four miature tre, each equipped wh ty handma prents. In late adolcence, I took on myself to dispt that idyll. I veered om beg a well-behaved boy to a somewhat chaotic one. In llege, I had a near-fatal dnken accint, which shook her more than I uld have imaged. I me out as gay, which, after a stggle, she accepted. Even perds when I drew away, my life was shaped around the love of words and mic that I hered om her. In later years, I did my bt to make amends. Readg Kennitt’s book remds me of how fortunate I was.</p><p class="paywall">Last Christmas, I spent a uple of weeks at my parents’ hoe. My mother would pass her wakg hours an armchair the library. One of her miature tre stood nearby. On Christmas Day, I played a few CDs for her: John Langstaff’s first “Christmas Revels” rerd, which she adored; Mozart ncertos wh Serk; bel-nto arias wh Renée Flemg, another favore; and Brahms’s Claret Qutet, the most serenely lyril of his late works, and the one she cherished the most. Her head tilted to the si, her ey twkled, her mouth worked self to a se. She had somethg to say, but I uldn’t make out, as was often the se toward the end.
