Leather Bar.</i>, his arty documentary about his attempt to reimage and film the twenty mut of explic gay sex scen excised om William Friedk's 1980 thriller <i>Cisg</i>. But 's not jt romantic sex, says Fran. It's the hardre porn that mak people unfortable: "Everybody's fuckg watchg porn and nobody's talkg about !"</p><p data-no-id="2" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0">On the ntrary, everyone's talkg about porn at Sundance. </p><p data-no-id="4" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0">Ever sce <i>Sex, Li, and Viotape,</i> there's always been plenty of sex at the ftival, and this year is no different, om the middle-aged-woman-turned-prostute drama <i>Concsn</i> to the Beat-era olic <i>Kill Your Darlgs</i>. Straight-up porn, however, has rarely been so proment. In addn to Fran's art-film — which he says he unrtook bee he's "fuckg sick" of the "straight normative behavr… fuckg stilled to my bra" — and the BDSM documentary <i>Kk</i>, which Fran produced, pornography has ted two of Sundance's biggt als. In Joseph Gordon-Levt's but film <i>Don Jon's Addictn</i>, which sold to Relativy for a reported $4 ln, the actor stars as a porn-addled stud who n't stop spankg the monkey long enough to pay attentn to his girliend (Srlett Johansson). In the bpic <i>Lovelace</i>, which sold to Radi-Weste for a reported $3 ln, Amanda Seyied is the legendary porn star who played a sex addict wh a cloris ep down her throat. </p><p data-no-id="6" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0">From a distance, all this porn might seem like rnchy sex-posive fun. No doubt, both films sold thanks to the tillatn the pch you'll see on posters: <i>Srlett Johansson and Joseph Gordon-Levt a romance about pornographic obssn! Amanda Seyied as the girl who go ep!</i> But 's a tease: They lead wh the ridiculo, stupid-fun appeal of sex-on-film, and then dramatize how all that piston-pumpg porno n your life. </p><p data-no-id="8" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0">In <i>Don Jon's Addictn</i>, which Gordon-Levt wrote and directed, he plays a mcle-bound, Italian stud wh a taste for unfortunate sleevels shirts, hair gel, and PornTube. As Gordon-Levt shouted, at the premiere, his father is played by "Tony fuckg Danza." He picks up hot bab at the club, gets isky, then sneaks out of bed the middle of the night to go spend some qualy time wh his te love, his MacBook. The film is tercut wh soul-ad snippets om rnchy onle porn. Time-lapse sequenc illtrate whole days lost to masturbatory excs: As the sun ris and sets, his wastebasket fills wh tissu.</p><p data-no-id="10" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0">As a superficial, sex-addicted blockhead, the smart, nice-guy Gordon-Levt is a b implsible. It's almost as if he misst himself for a greater challenge, and as a rult, his performance feels a b like a ritured imprsn. Gordon-Levt is likeable as ever, of urse, while nfsg his masturbatn marathons to his prit and woog the bombshell p played by Johansson — no matter how much he pumps his hand ont of that glowg laptop screen. He falls love, and then she search his browser history and dumps him. The film tak on a lightly satiric, rtoonish feel, as he rebounds wh prsive ugar played by Julianne Moore, who teach him that sex, unlike porn, isn't a one-way experience. You half-expect the film to build to a scene which Johansson and Gordon-Levt learn to meet halfway, maybe watch a ltle softre for fun, but no. It's the XXX bookmarks or Johansson. And, really, what would any red-blood, swaggerg stud choose? This is <i>Shame</i>: the romantic edy. It's a light, silly romp about the love-stroyg, humanizg effects of porn, and 's an odd mix.</p><p data-no-id="12" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0">The Lda Boreman bpic <i>Lovelace</i>, on the other hand, is a straight-up Amerin tragedy. The first act unspools as the spiratnal story of a small-town girl who be an in of the sexual revolutn thanks to her oral talents. It's brash and silly, a kd of orig story which you learn the exact moment when Bronx-born Lda Boreman learns to enjoy sex, and, most importantly, to breathe while gog down on her horndog hband Chuck Traynor, played by an ially charmg, mutton-chopped Peter Sarsgaard. Historil clips tch talkg heads praisg <i>Deep Throat</i>'s impact on femism. A pdish Johnny Carson mak easy jok. Lda even gets to meet an admirg Hugh Hefner, played by, y, Jam Fran.</p><p data-no-id="14" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0">Then the film lurch towards horror. All that ridiculo bad-joke porn turns out to be predited on the horrific history of abe Boreman would later reunt her 1980 memoir <i>Oral</i>, before beg an anti-porn activist. The latter half of the film is a gome, revisnist retellg of the first act, wh forced prostutn and domtic abe more graphic than any of the film's sex. An unregnizable Sharon Stone, who first seemed merely stern and overly protective as Boreman's pent-up moralistic mother, turns <i>All About Eve</i> sadistic. As her hband, Sarsgaard be a malevolent, domeerg monster — all sptle and impotent fury. He beats Lda vicly, steals om her, forc her to a hotel gang rape. In one scene that is both terrifyg and spastilly mpy, Chuck lifts a pistol, tak aim at a plastic Lda Lovelace blowup doll, and fir: It pops, and slis to the floor. </p><p data-no-id="16" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0">In moments like this, the film los s grip on the tone. Even as the vlence swells, the film n't help but wallow the seventi perms and dis tun. It's a faiar back-lot story about the gr behd the glz. Overall, the storytellg of the film, directed by Hollywood veterans Rob Epste and Jefey Friedman, is nventnal om scene to scene — and don't really tell you anythg you didn't know about the 1970s porn bs. (It was predited on the objectifitn and abe of women? You don't say...) But the Westes are clearly planng a fall release bee they see awards potential Seyied's full-throttle performance. She uld have a shot. Seyied giv everythg she n the role, disrobed and clothed: She's ee-love fabulo dog rtwheels on the beach Lda's early years, and palpably damaged her latter, darker days. </p><p data-no-id="18" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0">It's an unsettlg, pch-black narrative: When <i>Deep Throat</i> gave birth to a whole new wave of porn — mastreamg porn that guys like Joseph Gordon-Levt's lunkhead n't stop streamg — was Lda sacrificed for our ss? Leather Bar.</i>, his arty documentary about his attempt to reimage and film the twenty mut of explic gay sex scen excised om William Friedk's 1980 thriller <i>Cisg</i>. But 's not jt romantic sex, says Fran. It's the hardre porn that mak people unfortable: "Everybody's fuckg watchg porn and nobody's talkg about !"</p><p data-no-id="2" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0">On the ntrary, everyone's talkg about porn at Sundance. </p><p data-no-id="4" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0">Ever sce <i>Sex, Li, and Viotape,</i> there's always been plenty of sex at the ftival, and this year is no different, om the middle-aged-woman-turned-prostute drama <i>Concsn</i> to the Beat-era olic <i>Kill Your Darlgs</i>. Straight-up porn, however, has rarely been so proment. In addn to Fran's art-film — which he says he unrtook bee he's "fuckg sick" of the "straight normative behavr… fuckg stilled to my bra" — and the BDSM documentary <i>Kk</i>, which Fran produced, pornography has ted two of Sundance's biggt als. In Joseph Gordon-Levt's but film <i>Don Jon's Addictn</i>, which sold to Relativy for a reported $4 ln, the actor stars as a porn-addled stud who n't stop spankg the monkey long enough to pay attentn to his girliend (Srlett Johansson). In the bpic <i>Lovelace</i>, which sold to Radi-Weste for a reported $3 ln, Amanda Seyied is the legendary porn star who played a sex addict wh a cloris ep down her throat. </p><p data-no-id="6" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0">From a distance, all this porn might seem like rnchy sex-posive fun. No doubt, both films sold thanks to the tillatn the pch you'll see on posters: <i>Srlett Johansson and Joseph Gordon-Levt a romance about pornographic obssn! Amanda Seyied as the girl who go ep!</i> But 's a tease: They lead wh the ridiculo, stupid-fun appeal of sex-on-film, and then dramatize how all that piston-pumpg porno n your life. </p><p data-no-id="8" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0">In <i>Don Jon's Addictn</i>, which Gordon-Levt wrote and directed, he plays a mcle-bound, Italian stud wh a taste for unfortunate sleevels shirts, hair gel, and PornTube. As Gordon-Levt shouted, at the premiere, his father is played by "Tony fuckg Danza." He picks up hot bab at the club, gets isky, then sneaks out of bed the middle of the night to go spend some qualy time wh his te love, his MacBook. The film is tercut wh soul-ad snippets om rnchy onle porn. Time-lapse sequenc illtrate whole days lost to masturbatory excs: As the sun ris and sets, his wastebasket fills wh tissu.</p><p data-no-id="10" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0">As a superficial, sex-addicted blockhead, the smart, nice-guy Gordon-Levt is a b implsible. It's almost as if he misst himself for a greater challenge, and as a rult, his performance feels a b like a ritured imprsn. Gordon-Levt is likeable as ever, of urse, while nfsg his masturbatn marathons to his prit and woog the bombshell p played by Johansson — no matter how much he pumps his hand ont of that glowg laptop screen. He falls love, and then she search his browser history and dumps him. The film tak on a lightly satiric, rtoonish feel, as he rebounds wh prsive ugar played by Julianne Moore, who teach him that sex, unlike porn, isn't a one-way experience. You half-expect the film to build to a scene which Johansson and Gordon-Levt learn to meet halfway, maybe watch a ltle softre for fun, but no. It's the XXX bookmarks or Johansson. And, really, what would any red-blood, swaggerg stud choose? This is <i>Shame</i>: the romantic edy. It's a light, silly romp about the love-stroyg, humanizg effects of porn, and 's an odd mix.</p><p data-no-id="12" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0">The Lda Boreman bpic <i>Lovelace</i>, on the other hand, is a straight-up Amerin tragedy. The first act unspools as the spiratnal story of a small-town girl who be an in of the sexual revolutn thanks to her oral talents. It's brash and silly, a kd of orig story which you learn the exact moment when Bronx-born Lda Boreman learns to enjoy sex, and, most importantly, to breathe while gog down on her horndog hband Chuck Traynor, played by an ially charmg, mutton-chopped Peter Sarsgaard. Historil clips tch talkg heads praisg <i>Deep Throat</i>'s impact on femism. A pdish Johnny Carson mak easy jok. Lda even gets to meet an admirg Hugh Hefner, played by, y, Jam Fran.</p><p data-no-id="14" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0">Then the film lurch towards horror. All that ridiculo bad-joke porn turns out to be predited on the horrific history of abe Boreman would later reunt her 1980 memoir <i>Oral</i>, before beg an anti-porn activist. The latter half of the film is a gome, revisnist retellg of the first act, wh forced prostutn and domtic abe more graphic than any of the film's sex. An unregnizable Sharon Stone, who first seemed merely stern and overly protective as Boreman's pent-up moralistic mother, turns <i>All About Eve</i> sadistic. As her hband, Sarsgaard be a malevolent, domeerg monster — all sptle and impotent fury. He beats Lda vicly, steals om her, forc her to a hotel gang rape. In one scene that is both terrifyg and spastilly mpy, Chuck lifts a pistol, tak aim at a plastic Lda Lovelace blowup doll, and fir: It pops, and slis to the floor. </p><p data-no-id="16" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0">In moments like this, the film los s grip on the tone. Even as the vlence swells, the film n't help but wallow the seventi perms and dis tun. It's a faiar back-lot story about the gr behd the glz. Overall, the storytellg of the film, directed by Hollywood veterans Rob Epste and Jefey Friedman, is nventnal om scene to scene — and don't really tell you anythg you didn't know about the 1970s porn bs. (It was predited on the objectifitn and abe of women? You don't say...) But the Westes are clearly planng a fall release bee they see awards potential Seyied's full-throttle performance. She uld have a shot. Seyied giv everythg she n the role, disrobed and clothed: She's ee-love fabulo dog rtwheels on the beach Lda's early years, and palpably damaged her latter, darker days. </p><p data-no-id="18" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0">It's an unsettlg, pch-black narrative: When <i>Deep Throat</i> gave birth to a whole new wave of porn — mastreamg porn that guys like Joseph Gordon-Levt's lunkhead n't stop streamg — was Lda sacrificed for our ss?
