People hated . This was the Bh years. We weren’t out the way we are now. And pecially kids of that age, who were really watchg <em>Buffy</em>. You uld intify wh her bee she was an outsir and a loner. Even though she had iends, was a group of outsirs. And then when Willow me out years later, that was a real blockbter. I uldn’t believe they were dog this. She was and is and always will be the ultimate. “In my experience growg up gay, I was ndned to hate the feme quali myself, om the way I talk to the way I walk and everythg between,” says Matías Fran, a <em>Buffy</em> superfan known on Twter for his supercuts of the seri. “So jt to watch women simply be able to fully embrace their femy has always ronated wh me. And on <em>Buffy</em>, they were able to do all of that and then some.”</p><p><em>Buffy</em> hs differently for LGBTQ+ people; jt do. And I’m not talkg about jt gay men, as n often be the se wh certa pop-culture relics. I really mean the whole of our betiful muny. Why is that? I ask my iend Johnny:</p><p>“It’s important to not shg off the ‘queer person has a secret’ trope that’s <em>Buffy</em> that speaks so loudly to many our muny. ‘The queer has a secret power’ is so special for kids and is revised time and time aga YA novels and shows. I watched this show when I was the closet and then out of the closet. I was able to have a <em>Buffy</em> poster above my bed, have the ‘Be Me’ book out on display, or ask my mom to tape <em>Buffy</em> on TV for me when I was at choir practice late and I uld ‘pass.’ My secret was still safe ’e was a pretty girl om TV. But queers all knew what we were watchg. We were watchg a queer wh a secret slay her mons throughout high school and growg up, hidg and dodgg danger almost daily, all the while her mother was jt hopg she was adjtg well to a new town. We watched the queer Sobi navigate a landspe that was vic and fun at the same time: high school and hell on Earth. We were watchg so many ways. We knew, Mary. No high school show was dog that. At least, not starrg the misfs, the weirdos … the on that are sometim popular and sometim not.
