This book is the separate acunts of gay men who grew up on farms the Midwt. Reviewed Japan ?? on March 16, 2003 アメリカではこれまでにも、ゲイについての本は何冊も書かれてきた。しかしそのほとんどが、ニューヨークやサンフランシスコといった都市部に住む人たちについてだった。都市にゲイが集中する必然性はあるが、ゲイがいるのは都市ばかりとはかぎらない。アメリカの中西部の農場で生まれ育ったゲイの人たちの生活はどんなものなのだろう。彼らの体験を知るべく、GAY FARM BOYS PROJECT という組織を作り、アメリカの中西部のゲイコミュニティの団体に協力をしてくれる人を募った。すると120人からの返答があった。そのうちから75人を選び、著者が出かけていってインタビューをしてまとめたのがこの本である。 この地域(ral Midwt) は、ドイツやスカンディナヴィア諸国からの白人の移民が多い。コミュニティは教会でしっかりとまとまり、子どもでも早くから一人前の働き手として仕事をまかせられる。親戚以外は外から訪れる人もほとんどいない。隣の家といっても、見えるところにあるような近場ではない。人々の考え方はまだまだ保守的である。そういう環境のなかで、両親との関係はどうだったのか。どのように性に目覚め、ゲイであるという自覚をもったのか。どんな性体験をもち、どんなふうに相手を探し求めたのか。また農場で育ったということが、今の生活にどんな影響を与えているのか。これらの質問に、24歳から84歳までの75人の男たちが真摯に答えている。 年代ごとに並べられているので、ゲイに対するアメリカ社会の認識の変化も読みとれる。家族や宗教にもまして彼らを悩ましているのは、地理上の孤立感だ。少し前まではこの世の中に自分と同じような性癖の人がいることを知らなかった、こう告白する者さえいる。WASPというマジョリティのなかで、マイノリティを選びとった彼らの声には、アメリカという国の広さがもたらす孤独がくっきりと刻印されている。.
