Then I watch the black guy for signs that he shar my disquiet, and sometim I thk I n see his ey, a veiled chagr at both his pany and the bald ntrivance that roped him to . He seems to be askg himself, By what unholy mix of mographic lculatn and liberal-wish projectn have I end up wedged the ont seat of a ltle r between the two pkish fellows? In their morbidly lor-nsc lor-bldns, the mercials are like the stereotypil whe guy who thks some slogan has flung him to the magil land beyond race—Peter Riegert “Animal Hoe,” yellg “Hey Otis, my man!” onto a dance floor packed wh the skeptil black people of 1962. By pretendg isn’t so hard, he jt remds you how hard really is.</p><div><div class="ConsumerMarketgUnThemedWrapper-iUTMTf jssHut nsumer-marketg-un nsumer-marketg-un--article-mid-ntent" role="prentatn" aria-hidn="te"><div class="nsumer-marketg-un__slot nsumer-marketg-un__slot--article-mid-ntent nsumer-marketg-un__slot---ntent"></div><div class="journey-un"></div></div></div><p class="paywall">It’s a paful irony of race relatns Ameri that they mand, or at least warrant and generally repay, a gree of cril reflectn that n renr a guy unable to actually <em>have</em> race relatns, even—or perhaps pecially—wh those most siar to him, men that he might, but for the fathomls black-whe thg, be iends wh. Michael Chabon seems to have this dilemma md when, “The Yiddish Policemen’s Unn,” he wr, “Apart om homosexuals, only chs players have found a reliable way to bridge, tensely but whout fatal vlence, the gulf that separat any two men.” There are no Ain-Amerins Chabon’s Yiddish Alaska, but Ameri’s black-whe gulf is surely the tt applitn of his formula. To nfirm this, jt look at the larger social mography of your own racially mixed home town. Then pare wh that of the chs tabl s cy parks, and that of s gay bars.</p><p class="paywall">So, sce Chabon giv a leral chasm as our problem, how would he map our passage over ? What, if not chs or homosexualy, unrli the stubborn fellowship between the characters his sharp and hilar new novel, “Telegraph Avenue,” which a black uple and a whe uple, bt iends and bs partners, stggle to stay together when their shared worlds crack apart. Troy Patterson, of Slate, is one of the many crics who, while ncedg s brimmg virtuosy, have <a href=">puzzled over the optimism about race</a> “Telegraph Avenue.” Patterson fds his answer by lookg at the bgraphy prted on the back flap of the novel. The novelist, Patterson adpans, “liv Berkeley.”</p><p class="paywall">Patterson is beg glib, of urse, but he might be onto somethg brgg up California geography, though if there’s a cy that explas Chabon’s spicly good attu, he has the wrong one fgered. The relevant cy isn’t hippie Berkeley, where Michael Chabon has been samplg the hallucogenic agula or somethg. It’s scrappy Oakland, where, the novel, a pair of bt iends named Archy Stallgs (Ain-Amerin) and Nat Jaffe (whe, Jewish) share a quixotic partnership hopels Brokeland Rerds, while, over Berkeley, their wiv Aviva and Gwen, also bt iends, n a midwife bs. Chabon whholds any strong soclogil claims about Oakland, but his novel evok the cy’s real racial folkways, the oddly wng blend of prickls and sociabily that I noticed on movg there myself, Augt, 2004, the month which the novel is set.</p><p class="paywall">The novel’s tle is a sly misdirectn and perhaps, as such, a sort of Socratic lson the practice of readg . For anyone wh passg knowledge of the Bay Area, “Telegraph Avenue” signifi “Cal Berkeley.” It’s the famo street that ends at Cal’s Sather Gate, where all that stuff happened the sixti, and, at this historic term of Berkeley’s Telegraph Avenue, “Telegraph Avenue” spends precisely zero time. Chabon’s stretch of Telegraph is 2.4 to the south, about a e si the Oakland le, where anchors a scffy neighborhood known as Lower Teml.</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-1 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall">Brokeland Rerds ss a ltle space on Telegraph prevly home to a row of barber chairs, and, Archy and Nat like to thk, ntu the barbershop tradn of manly loerg and banter. Like much of Chabon’s fictn, then, “Telegraph Avenue” is about the problems of men, and pecially the problems of fatherhood. It unspools a three-generatn drama of fathers and sons, at the center of which, the send generatn, stands Archy, who holds this posn wh heroic unsteads. Archy Stallgs is the black Achill of procrastatn. The wheels of Fate turn on his ambivalence. Nat, though, starts to wonr if what they’re dog is possible at all, if they’ve been floutg some law of nature pullg off for the last thirteen years.</p><div class="Contaer-bkChBi byNLHx"></div><p class="paywall">When Chabon reveals that Nat was raised by a black stepmother who tght him to ok soul food, and that he grew up among black kids the poor and vlent East Bay cy of Richmond, I was disappoted. At first, I thought he was takg a shortcut, tidyg up his racial anthropology by makg Nat an honorary black guy. But Chabon’s actually raisg the stak. He’s askg, If Nat n’t have a black guy as a bt iend, who n? Maybe we should start wh the bt-se scenar and go om there. The optimism, other words, is highly ndnal. Nat was born, then extensively retrofted, to make his way the ghetto. He’s the Bnic Whe Man. He’s naturally gff and nontatnal, macho spe of himself, a leftist who still gets fistfights, married to a femist midwife. Before he met his Jewish Aviva, he dated and lted after black women exclively. He began his life battlg for rpect om black boys, and now, though he’s manic and paranoid and so trips out on a lot of thgs, he don’t trip out on whether black men accept him. Moby pimp-walks the door, and his cheap su and bad sho and weird whe-guy haircut, addrs everyone “like he was om the ’hood.” Archy thks that Moby tri a ltle too hard, maybe, but pegs him as “a sweet-natured whe guy om Indiana.” For Nat, though, Moby embodi his personal hell, the p of obsequ whens he’s spent his whole life sisteppg. As an Oakland transplant, I take two thgs om this. First, Moby’s sheer faiary, the fact that he keeps g around and beg nice and holdg up his end of the nversatn, ws him sufficient goodwill om his fellow-Oaklanrs, spe his Ebonics excs. Send, if he was origally om Oakland, he probably wouldn’t have to act that way.</p><p class="paywall">When I moved om Washgton to Oakland’s Lake Merrt neighborhood eight years ago, I was a wrer wh <a href=">a nservative paper-trail</a> on race, and my new cy gave me a happy shock. I shared the nservative view that inty polics and ant race-nscns are polarizg and self-perpetuatg. Yet here I was the cy of the Black Panthers, a cy wh a most bter history of racial polics, which was still playg out on a range of issu. If any cy should have been polarized by a hyperawarens of race, was Oakland. But what I found was the most socially tegrated Amerin cy I’d ever seen, by far—rtrants, fés, crowd siwalks, farmers’ markets, romantic upl and whole happy fai, scen apparently stage-managed by the Diversy Director God’s own Human Rourc Department. I’ve heard some theori about why ’s like this, and I have a few of my own, but my immediate fascatn is how seems to happen, pecially among men, who, even the easit circumstanc, always have that Chabonian gulf to get across.</p><p class="paywall">It’s said that Ameri everyone thks he’s middle class. In Oakland, though, the men you see on the street, precisely the bourgeois mercial districts, and pecially those who were born here, all seem to thk they’re stevedor. Maybe ’s the cy’s grim dtrial past, or the East Bay’s munal gdge agast San Francis, or the fact that men of both rac have famo home-town role mols ( the Panthers and Hell’s Angels), or, ed, s long history of bare-knuckle polics, which race remaed explic but lost some of s power to nfound hont nversatn. Maybe ’s Al Davis and the Rairs. I don’t know. But there’s an Oakland tough-guy sensibily that black and whe men wear like a sat warmup jacket. For olr men of both rac, seems to give them a mon idm, a way of beg together their cy: two men ridg the same basic swagger out of Peet’s, the same basic wraparound sunglass, shootg the sh on a bench the same ted-badass flectns, and then gettg to their rpective B.M.W.s and drivg off to live their liv as retired lawyers, their separate neighborhoods the Hills.</p><p class="paywall">In “Telegraph Avenue,” Michael Chabon’s characters jo wh the giddy excs and unlikely rigor of his prose to mount a sort of meta-argument that we might bridge racial distance g the skills found our bigger-hearted novelists—imagative sympathy, attentn to the hidn, particular sourc of affectn and rentment, a lovg slowns to judge. Wh the nf of “Telegraph Avenue,” the slightly rbonated atmosphere that s characters breathe, this meta-argument is both lightful to enterta and fully persuasive.</p><p class="paywall">Still, the non-fictnal world, wh s largely unrbonated atmosphere, the novelist’s sympathy would seem to need some prendn, lt meet wh spicn or ntempt. Across “the gulf that separat any two men,” pecially as yawns between whe men and black men Ameri, the aspect of unrstandg, the warm exprsn that says, “Hey, du, I’m not here to judge,” might be read as nscendg or weak, or perhaps as an unearned timacy. A man n eher urt the disqualifitns directly or he n disqualify himself by tumblg to the regrs of the reasonable thoughts, and appearg lame that way. He needs somethg else. On that sre, strengthens the possibili njured “Telegraph Avenue”—ep iendship between black men and whe men, unformed by nrosis, or spicn, or chey stratagems of pretendg to be each other—that s urban
