It’s been a very long road. It really go all the way back to 2011 — when we started the show — and 2014, when we were pchg the episo “Jailbreak.” The more material I would pch about Ruby and Sapphire and their romantic relatnship, the more visible the ceilg of what we uld do beme. And really ma me realize how cril was to have LGBTQIA characters G-rated media. I began to realize how quiet I had been about my own story and my own life, bee I had ternalized this ia that there was somethg “adult” about the stori. And there isn’t! The them were a part of my childhood and they were a part of the childhoods of many people on my staff. There is nothg more “adult” about Ruby and Sapphire than any other uple on the show. So I beme very driven to make sure that we uld tell the most wholome love story you’ve ever seen on televisn.</p><p><strong>What has the fan reactn been like?</strong></p><p>I was overjoyed! I was learng a lot about differentiatn while I was wrg this arc. It’s this ia that members of a uple need to be really solid their dividual inti orr to be stronger together, and that if you fe to each other, you might start to feel like you don’t have the tonomy to make your own cisns. If you n get that solidy yourself, will strengthen your relatnship, and will also pel the other person the relatnship to strengthen themselv orr to meet you there. And then all of those nflicts bee somethg that n sharpen each dividual and tt them together.</p><p>I was also thkg a lot about choice — that they uld be so much stronger if they chose to be together, and if every moment om then on, they were ntug to choose to do everythg they were dog together. They’ll fely be more flexible om now on. They’ll be able to separate and e back together more easily. And all of them will be stronger both dividually and together.</p><p><strong><em>Steven Universe</em> is one of the first shows I’ve seen wh nonbary characters, and you recently me out as a nonbary woman. Did you clu the characters as a way of exprsg yourself, or did the show help you figure the thgs out about yourself?</strong></p><p>Both! I didn’t necsarily have the language for a lot of my own feelgs early on, but even when I was young I’d get cricism om iends and fay members who uldn’t tell if my drawgs were supposed to be boys or girls. And I ed to worry about , but that’s the thg! I don’t thk people should have to worry about !</p><p>One of the thgs that exced me early on, pecially about Stevonnie, was that I jt wanted to do and have be betiful. I had never seen that! I had seen thgs like this where had been played as a joke or some kd of a problem, but pecially wh Stevonnie I wanted to create a character so great that everyone who se them thks, “This person is Separatg out entertament and partmentalizg different children so they don’t teract wh each other don’t make sense to me. I wish I uld’ve watched those rtoons as a kid and felt like was okay. I thk ’s really unfortunate every time someone has to feel wrong for likg somethg.
