This is, as my too-genero wife remds me, my first <em>L Word</em> viewg party—I was a young teenager when the origal seri aired.</p><p><em>The L Word</em> aired long before the popularizatn of streamg servic, a time when queer characters were sentially ignored on mastream TV and viewers would rarely, if ever, hear the word <em>lbian</em> any scripted program. It was the era of Limewire and DVDs, and an age of immense speratn for LGBTQ+ reprentatn all media. And so <em>The L Word</em> beme a pivotal show for LGBTQ+ people of var backgrounds, experienc, and ag. Almost everyone I’ve talked to who has endured five seasons of listeng to the show’s “The Way That We Live” theme song—the tchy tune didn’t play for the first season—has a story about watchg <em>The L Word</em>. I realized there’s nothg like cheerg on your (fictnal) hero among queer fam. I actually started rewatchg recently (for the third time!) to gear up for the reboot. While the reprentatn was the first of s kd, and seeg lbian sex on TV was huge for me, I certaly have my opns on how the show alt wh transns, nsent, monogamy (and totally ignorg polyamory as an optn), and emotnal rponsibily. I started watchg the show 2009, so the first few seasons were on Netflix and the [last season] was airg. Before I me out, I watched alone. After I me out, I had another lbian as a roommate, and some iends who would e over and we’d watch together. There was a lol lbian bar, North Charlton, lled The Chart that had viewg parti. Unfortunately I never went bee I was a baby gay, and the crowd that equented the bar was mostly elr lbians. I remember askg myself, ‘Why am I to this?’ Years later I saw a post about on Tumblr and was like, Oh my God, my young nfg fantasi now make sense and n be fulfilled. The show was my pe, and I’d n home to watch alone after class sophomore year of llege. I didn’t have many queer iends yet, but sometim I’d make my straight cis iends watch the livg room wh me. They had a lot of qutns, naturally, and they liked to watch bee they thought Shane was hot. I bged all six seasons a uple months. I remember feelg seen and unrstood for the first time a while. I was learng so much of this world that I was so exced to step to and explore, a world that started to feel more tangible. It’s as if <em>The L Word</em> was my queer night school that I was so exed to e home to.
