I don't watch the movi based on them.</p><p class="paywall">But I've still got a paperback on my shelf -- battered and worn the way beloved books get, spe floppy, rners bent. I was a gifted and severely socially alienated ltle kid, and thors who n wre really, eakishly brilliant children are extremely rare. <em>Enr's Game</em> was an timably important touchstone -- the first and sometim only sign I had that there was someone out there who even vaguely <em>got </em> and red enough to try to wre down.</p><div class="Contaer-bkChBi byNLHx"></div><p class="paywall">This isn't an unmon experience, I thk. The only time his beliefs me up our nversatns was a ment he ma about fictn beg a totally appropriate venue for any kd of iologil proselytizg. I may not have agreed wh his personal beliefs -- I knew that he was an observant Mormon and at least somewhat polilly nservative -- but I rpected and still rpect the prciple of not g fictn as a soap box, even if the thor who troduced to me has sce fotten or abandoned .</p><p class="paywall">The tth, of urse, is that Card had been avidly homophobic sce long before I knew him. That at the same time we were talkg about character velopment and the shap of stori, he was railg agast marriage rights for same-sex upl and sistg homosexualy was a byproduct of child abe. Whether the rampagg extremism he's explod to is a product of a signifint change perspective or jt ls tact and a larger platform, I'll never know: We fell out of touch long before, for which I'm wardly grateful.</p><p class="paywall">Card's hate has e to lor my experience of his fictn -- as, I thk, should. Neher fictn nor s creators exist a vacuum; nor is the choice to nsume art or support an artist morally ntral. I will not pay to see <em>Enr's Game</em>; I will never buy another py. But there's that battered, beloved old paperback still stg on my shelf, and I n't and don't want to erase what 's meant to me. Whoever I am, wherever I've e om, as a wrer and a human beg, <em>Enr's Game</em> was part of that. And so was Card.</p><p class="paywall">But I don't want to walk away whout stoppg to mourn for what was worth mourng.</p><p class="paywall">In Febary, Alyssa Rosenberg wrote an excellent and nuanced <a href=">examatn</a> of the paradox of <em>Enr's Game</em>, and the tricky negotiatn of nsumg valuable works by reprehensible artists. In the 1930s and 1940s, Gee Orwell produced <a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">article</a> <a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">after</a> <a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">article</a> tryg to navigate the treachero tersectns of lerature wh the personal and polil. But even now, there's no map. It is unnscnable to keep supportg Card, to buy his books, to afford him any further platform. But if we all walk away and keep walkg, someday a kid is gog to reach for the touchstone that I clung to -- and e up empty.</p><p class="paywall">Once, early our rrponnce, Card and I talked about villas. I don't remember the exact words, but Card's advice stuck wh me: to fd somethg worth lovg every antagonist. It's the lson that ma <em>Speaker for the Dead</em> my partner's favore book the Enr seri: that no one is all good or all bad; that most of live the liv we thk we have to.</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-2 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall">If this were fictn, there would be a clear answer. Real life is msier, the stak higher. Complex and paful problems aren't always offset by elegant solutns. Sometim, there's no right answer. Sometim every choice means lettg go of somethg valuable -- the qutn isn't "whether," but "what."</p><p class="paywall">The days, 's easier for me to thk of them as two separate people -- the Card I knew, whose books I loved; and the creasgly unbalanced and extremist pund whose worldview srcely unts me as a person. But that's rctnist, and a disservice to both. Card is a monster who helped me learn to wre, an thor of hateful screed whose novels tght lonely, angry kids passn and gave them their first sense of home. None of those thgs mak the others go away. None of those thgs mak the others stop matterg.</p><p class="paywall">I am not Enr. The enemy's gate is not down.
