Marv Gaye. Whfield and Strong then had Marv Gaye rerd the song but still no luck: Motown head Berry Gordy chose Holland-Dozier-Holland's "Your Unchangg Love" over "Grapeve" as his next sgle. Their versn was a h, enterg the Top 40 November 1967 and gog to #2 Gaye's versn was clud on his 1968 album In The Groove (later re-tled I Heard It Through The Grapeve).
Rodney Jon, the Chigo disc jockey at WVON, started playg on the air, Berry Gordy rensired and released Gaye's versn as a sgle, which beme even more popular and known as the five versn of the song. Gaye's "Grapeve" pound the charts about a year after Knight's, gog to #1 Ameri on December 14, this heartbreakg tune about a man who fds out sendhand that his girl is cheatg on him, Marv Gaye wng out the emotn the song thanks to Norman Whfield, who produced the track and gave him very specific stctns. Whfield had Gaye sg slightly higher than his normal range, which created the straed vol, and he ma him do over and over until he got right.
Gaye explaed to NME: "I simply took directn, as I felt the directn he was expoundg was a proper one. This was Gaye's first #1 h, and ma him a star.
